One more year. That’s how long Wenger has left on his current deal and I believe that’s how long he has left to win something. Yes, he’s our most successful boss, I just don’t want him to be remembered as one of the great bosses who never won the Champions League. The other thing is when he does leave, there isn’t a lot out there that fits the bill.
I’ve seen talk on this site about Mourinho. Hate him or love him, you can’t deny his ability as a coach, a motivator and like Wenger he’s not afraid of taking on players with big egos. At Inter he’s combined his gritty defensive attitude with style and flair. The other week against Barca, Lucio stopped Gerard Pique from scoring and celebrated the block like he had just scored. That attitude spread through the whole team. Fighting for each other, throwing themselves infront of shots on goal and not giving up for the whole 90 minutes. And Mourinho has the players at his disposal.
If we had showed half that spirit since we moved to E******s then I think we would have a couple of trophies at least. The other thing is because of the World Cup, transfer fees as well as wage demands will be sky high and Wenger doesn’t like that. But I’m afraid if he wants to end our barren run then he has to bite the bullet and spend big. We would make the money back easily through shirt sales if he signs one or two big names.
It’s been rumoured he has £40-60 million at his disposal but remember he can recoup money from sales. These figures are rough estimates, Almunia (£2million) Fabianski (£1million) Silvestre (£500,000), Senderos (£3 million). (Ed’s note – I think the latter two are out of contract anyway, in which case, scrub £3.5m there. I can however, think of some others that could be sold…) The money made from any sales can go towards new players’ wages. It’s not rocket science. I’ve also heard that in May, Ivan Gazidis is to face the shareholders again (well actually the Arsenal Supporters’ Trust membership, many of whom are shareholders in their own right - Ed)> and then there’s the annual shareholders question and answer session with Wenger. How I would love to be a fly on the wall in both meetings. (Well, become a member of the trust before May 10th and you can go as a human being to the Gazidis event!) It was said that after last year’s meeting that the manager seriously considered the Madrid job. Yet Wenger won’t join another club as he won’t get the control and influence that he does with us.
This summer is the last chance to get it right in the transfer market and on the pitch.
