A few thoughts ahead of Sunday

Under Pressure?

Fabiflopksi: Surely Wenger won’t risk playing him on Sunday?

Let’s face it, Spurs will beat Burnley on Sunday. A draw on Sunday against Fulham should be enough, but given the inept, abject, unprofessional performances of late, who honestly expects a convincing performance? We are lucky that Fulham will have one eye on the Europa Cup Final. However, given our lack of creativity in the last couple of games, and Fulham’s defensive excellence, I don’t expect an easy game. A Fulham breakaway goal or a towering header by Hangeland from a free kick is all too predictable, especially if Fabiflopksi plays.

Had the season a couple more games to go, I have no doubt Spurs would overhaul us. So much for progress this season. In his Q&A last season, Ivan Gazidis said 4th place wasn’t good enough; we may hold onto 3rd, but it will be only by the skin of our teeth. What we have seen this season is quite simply not good enough.

Everything Wenger has said this week is wrong in my view; complaining about Blackburn’s tactics, telling us the squad is basically good enough and the like. He has a real job to do this week getting his pampered babies and lazy boys to focus on getting the job done on Sunday; and that job is a win, a convincing win, ideally with a clean sheet. As David Bowie once sang: “All you've got to do is win”.

Trouble is, given the collapses at Wigan and Blackburn, I have no real faith in the team right now. Who does?

Finally, I can’t help wondering if the only way that Wenger and the Board will recognise that this team is not good enough and that to compete for honours major change to the team is required is for what seemed unthinkable a couple of weeks ago to happen, i.e. the humiliation of defeat on Sunday and Spurs beating Burnley. If that happens, Ivan Gazidis’ Q&A the following day will be interesting to say the very least.
