Another three years of Wenger?

Talk of a two year renewal for the manager has some very concerned indeed

Another three years of Wenger?

Arsene: Has the chef dispensed with the oven and hob?

Having just read a rumour that Wenger has agreed a two year extension on his current contract possibly keeping him at the club until 2013, it makes me wonder how our board could have come to this decision if true. It was bad enough hearing Arsenal supporters sing Wenger’s name when they went a goal up against Blackburn, because I am convinced the board is oblivious to the frustrated feelings of a large percentage of supporters, which is masked by supporters singing Wenger’s name. The thought of having to endure three more years of pretty, but spineless football by Wenger which will result in us winning nothing but plaudits leaves me cold. Even if this particular rumour turns out to be false, we all know the board does want to get Wenger to extend his contract.

Wenger has turned into a romantic dreamer ever since he dismantled the Invincibles team and has made his own position all the more untenable by treating the domestic cup competitions with disdain. If he had won two or three trophies during the last five years the sense of frustration would probably not be as great as it currently is with a lot of supporters. He even sacrifices the league now, as witnessed by his team selection against Birmingham, all so he can fulfil his own personal desire to win the Champions League and sod any other competition. Obviously yes I would also love to see Arsenal win the Champions League one day, but not at the expense of never ever winning a domestic competition again, especially when deep down we all know we are currently miles away from succeeding in his quest, thus leaving us without a trophy for five years now and counting.

I know we do not have a God given right to win something every year, and as a Gooner since 1970 believe me I have endured plenty of barren years, but why can’t the board see what is so obvious to even a blind man? Other teams will not just admire our pretty football and simply roll over. They will find a way to compete against us, as they have, just as we would if we were in their shoes. Which is why everybody can see what’s missing from our team, apart from the only man who can do something about it, namely Arsene Wenger. If he is serious about being happy with his squad with MAYBE only two or three additions required, when everybody already knows that one of those players will be arriving on a free from Bordeaux who is a forward, then as a board member you would have to question Wenger’s sanity surely.

It is his entire defence that needs the mayor surgery, and that now only leaves one or maybe two players to come in for the goalkeeping position. In central defence Gallas will probably be off and I pray that so will Silvestre, leaving us with only three central defenders if Campbell extends, but don’t forget he is 35! So realistically a minimum of two are required, but probably three as Djourou is another of our always injured players, and can simply not be relied upon. What about a holding midfielder? That is all before you even begin to tackle our current full backs, who won’t stop crosses raining into our penalty area. The last thing you would do surely is extend Wenger’s contract if you were a board member, without first applying some pressure and reassurances that the direction our esteemed manager has taken will be changed or else face the consequences, just as we all have to in the real world.

I realize that the board don’t and should never pick the team, but if you owned a hotel and employed a chef and said to him cook me something really nice only to discover he has decided to throw out the oven and hob, you would not unreasonably start asking questions of him. Simple analogy I know, but if you have probably the two worst goal keepers in the entire Premiership as we do, but at the same time are aspiring to win either the Champions League or the Premiership would that observation not concern you as a board member? Does such blind, stubborn stupidity warrant a contract extension? Not in my book, but unfortunately I, like most fans, have zero influence, which is how it should be. But that does not mean that the deep frustrations I am feeling are doubled when you hear talk of contract extensions.
