Well another season ends and we find ourselves about to lose another of our best players, well actually our best player, Cesc. I don't want to appear negative and pessimistic but let's face it Gooners we have been here before haven't we? The same open "touting" of our players in the written and broadcast media, how the top European clubs, usually the big two in Spain, want our players and how they will deliver them to their fans as a summer gift from their wannabe club presidents. How they will offer us 25 or 30 million euros and maybe a cast off of theirs, and what a great favour they are doing us.
We have been going through this every summer for getting on 10 years now. First Patrick Vieira for a few years before he finally left, Thierry Henry every summer, Cashley slithered away to Stamford Bridge, and now after a couple of seasons of openly touting our Club Captain, Cesc is on the brink of leaving us. You just have to read the quotes coming from him, not openly saying he is going, but saying he wants to play for Barca isn't what you would call re-assuring is it?
And when he goes who will be next? Robin van Persie of course. That's next summer’s soap opera. I said a long time ago (on here I think, but not sure) that this was the one drawback of buying so many players from the Continent, that they are far less opposed to moving clubs and moving around Europe. Regarding Cesc, I think we realised that one day he would want to go home to Spain and to Barcelona, but I was hoping we would get a few years out of him in his prime before that happened but it looks increasingly unlikely that is not going to be the case.
So if we are going to sell him I wish someone at Arsenal, be it Wenger or Gazidis, finds a backbone, straps on a pair and tell Barca or Real Madrid, Chelski, Man City or Utd that if you want our best player(s) then the bidding starts at £60million, no cast offs and show us the money or p*ss off. Fabregas is our player and he's under contract, until 2014.
I'm getting fed up of this. I wonder where our club is heading. Last week Wenger said the only two domestic trophies worth winning were the Premiership and Champions League qualification, and there we have it. Just sell our best players to pay off the debt and sod the trophies. I mean who wants a day out at a Cup Final at Wembley anyway? This from a manager who said he loved the FA Cup when we used to be in the final at Cardiff every year. On Saturday we saw the Chavs celebrating at Wembley again. They seem to enjoy winning there and they're ok for a bob or two.
Will Cesc still be with us when the season starts in August? I really hope so but after spending a few weeks with his mates in the Spanish squad at the World Cu.p I fear the worst.
p.s. £60 million up front, no instalments.
