So the e-mail stories about England's split in the camp where just scurrilous and without any foundation and current and former captains get on like Ant & Dec. In a way that makes England's pathetic World Cup performances worse - thank God Theo wasn't there - now he would have been the perfect scapegoat!
For me it is simple. English players just do not have the technique at the highest level and when you have a player approaching something called class his manager, being from the north of these isles made sure he was sent to the World Cup absolutely knackered and programmed only to play for Sir Alex.
Our clubs’ success in recent years in Europe is based on English grunt and European finesse - just look at how poor Liverpool are without the world class Alonso!
The old worn out chestnut of pride in playing for your country doesn't wash with me. For years successive politicians have tried to remove the word England from our daily lexicon, so how can you expect players to respond when playing for a country that politically and geographically barely exists.
As for the FA preparing an England team for a World Cup - don't make me laugh. They can't even prepare a football pitch on their own national ground.
One of the major reasons why Sam Allardyce did not get the England job was because the FA felt he would not be able to handle the star players - I now realize that would have been his greatest strength because star players is exactly what England do not need. Mr. Araldite would have cobbled together 22 of the finest journeymen in our leagues and I know one thing - we would never have been caught on the break the way we were against Germany.
If you look back at when George Graham became our manager the first thing he did was to clear out the so called ‘star players’ - out went Sansom, Rix, Mariner, Nicholas and anyone who looked like they may have an opinion. In came the younger players from the youth team and good hungry players from the smaller clubs, Dixon, Bould, Winterburn etc. It is that kind of clear out that England need, we are never going to play like Spain, Holland or Brazil, it is just not in the English game to weave patterns on the pitch - the majority of the fans want the ball in the box as early as possible - end of story!
This bit hurts but there is a blinding logic that says the best man to make the most of England's poor performance is the King of anti-football Big Sam. You'll get no fancy patterns with ‘The Walrus’, just wonderfully symmetrical straight lines. We could then field World Cup teams from players below that top aggravating strata of football and let loose players who would be very proud to represent their country after they got over the shock of being selected! Our version of the beautiful game would be two short passes with the third always being a long ball. There would be three axis in our play, down the pitch, across the pitch and of course up in the air, rather than the five or seven axis type of play preferred by Spain, Brazil & Holland.
We’d use players like Robinson in goal, Gary Cahill, Phil Jagielka, Dawson, Bent and Kevin Davies - who could soften teams up with his elbows for 60 minutes. Then we could send on a fired up Bent to run at the wounded players left by the Bolton ramrod.
David Dunn and Milner firing in cross after cross from deep positions and the irritating Cattermole leaving a foot in all over the pitch. The why can't Lampard & Gerrard play together question would be solved - neither would play! Would Rooney make it - well Sam has done Fergie enough favours over the years and I am sure Sir Alex could tell Wayne to do everything ‘Big Uncle Sam’ says - and there you have it, the makings of a pure and honest English football team. Sven Goran Eriksson, unlike Capello, knew exactly what England's limitations were and played according to our overall ability, he got England to quarter finals because he kept it simple. “This is a ball and this is a goal" - that kind of basic logic.
What was wrong with Eriksson, in my opinion, was that he made out he had coached the players into a winning formula. And he cost the FA millions in remuneration - Big Sam is different, the Sven playing style comes natural to him and he would do it for much less money because he really wants the job.
Just ponder on the advantages of his appointment.
1. The FA will save millions on salaries, these savings can then go on trying grow a decent pitch at the new Wembley.
2. The top clubs will not have to worry about their so-called stars coming home knackered from internationals or tournaments - none would be selected.
3. The best of the lot - With Mr. Araldite out of the domestic game, Arsenal goalkeepers will no longer be bullied and our less physical players (about two thirds of them) will not get beaten up when travelling to Blackburn or similar North West grounds.
Am I taking the p*ss - well maybe, but if Tony Blair can leave John Prescott in charge of the country while on holiday I am sure we can trust Big Sam to get the best from our journeymen footballers - it would make a great experiment.
