Captain’s job should go to Vermaelen

Response to a summer of tapping up with no discouragement from the current skipper

Captain’s job should go to Vermaelen

Cesc: Why is he homesick now?

(Ed’s note – This piece was submitted before last Thursday’s Members’ Day and Cesc Fabregas’ statement of commitment to the club on Friday)

Well the relentless onslaught by Barcelona to get us to sell Fabregas goes on. I have said repeatedly to people I have spoken to on this matter that we know Fabregas will leave us one day with our blessing, hopefully with some medals to take with him providing Barcelona didn't insult us with an insulting offer, which is exactly what they have done.

But to carry on openly tapping up our player in TV & media interviews with not so much as a warning or rebuke from U.E.F.A is disgraceful, and not a peep out of our good for nothing F.A. either. Barca & Real Madrid do this all the time and get away with it.

The longer this goes on the more I am of the opinion that Fabregas is going nowhere, no matter what they offer us. He signed a new extended contract a year ago and all of a sudden he's homesick, I'm sick of this crap every summer for the last 8 or 9 years. And I think Cesc had better watch himself and not take the Arsenal support for granted. We are watching what he's up to over in Spain and he is doing nothing to discourage the Barcelona players and directors from their public comments.

As far as I'm concerned there is no way he should be our Captain now, the job should be Vermaelen’s. I noticed that Le Boss said he will not now be in the market for a midfielder any more after the perfomances of Frimpong & Wilshere over the weekend in the E******s Cup. Well I'm pleased the young lads played well and I look forward to seeing them through the season, though Wilshere will probably feature a lot more than Frimpong, but let's get things in perspective here, it was a pre-season tournament.

Celtic weren't really going at it three days before a CL return leg at Parkhead, so once the transfer window closes and Wilshere's form dips we're, back where we were last season with Alex Song then either Diaby or Denilson. I'm sorry but Denilson doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence in the defensive midfield position. I'm looking forward to the new season starting and I'm really hoping that Arsenal stay tough in their dealings with Barcelona.
