Arsenalisation - more like Americanisation!

Trolley Dollies : Arsenal are turning into no-frills airline in their attempts to extract cash from the fans

So the transfer deadline window shuts and while other clubs have strengthened we sat on our hands just wanting the day over so we can continue with the season.

I stated some weeks back that the failure of Arsenal to buy a top line centre back or goalkeeper would result in my cancelling my Arsenal TV subscriptions in protest - tomorrow I will hit back against the club I love in a pathetic manner but I need to make a personal statement to feel a little better about our club’s transformation.

The lack of world class purchases over the last few seasons ensures that we have been kept out of the title race and therefore by lowering expectations it takes the heat off Wenger and the players. Success in winning a trophy will be a surprise and as underdogs Arsene and the board have "copped out" of the pressure cooker that managers like Ferguson, Mourinho and Ancelotti have to work under to justify their position at their clubs where success is measured in trophies - whatever the cost.

Every club knows our weaknesses so any Arsenal fan who feels that our squad is adequate enough is just the kind of fan that our American-styled club craves.

The club is now unleashing American style marketing on its fans with swathes of tempting offers: personalize your seat, the Armoury Square project - the club now behaves like a budget airline with trolley dollies offering all kinds of deals to us when we attend the coffer-filling home games.

One key feature in boosting sales in any organization is how much more business can a company drag out of its existing customers - we are now witnessing this full bloodied Americanization of our club at the expense of the playing squad. The accountants are now in charge, it is no longer about winning trophies it is about finishing in the top four by spending as little as possible. Matchdays at the E******s are about taking as much money from fans while they are there, and soon we will have our American lead board demanding that the league turns a matchday experience into four quarters instead of just two halves. Then we can flog double the sales of the £10 beefburgers on match days. Spending millions on players, even a goalkeeper, is out unless we can guarantee a return on those millions spent, that is why FA Cups and League Cups are ignored because there is no money in them!

So as we enter "Groundhog season" we will, as in previous years run out of players in late March/early April because we have a squad thinner than a bottom six club.

That nagging potential for long term injuries is as great as ever, coupled with the shortage of world class players in key positions, so the Premier League will again be beyond us.

So today as a protest to the board for not using the money that they have dragged out of its fans from all over the world to buy a decent keeper, I am cancelling my Arsenal TV subscriptions. Pathetic I know but I must do something to make a statement against the lunacy that prevails in the boardroom.

While it is great to see the Arsenalisation of our stadium, it is the Americanization of my club, the club of my father and the club of my sons - that worries me the most!
