Time for my weekly collection of random Gooner based thoughts…
Braga, Bolton, Blackburn and Blackpool - we like beating the Bs - I'm off to write to the Premier League in hope of renaming Chelsea "Bolsheviks FC" and Man Utd "Bloody lots of debt FC" - maybe it will improve our chances of beating them this season.
In truth we have beaten the teams we are expected to do well against - and we started last season in similar fashion - I believe Wenger is also aware of this and is rightly delighted yet still grounded.
October 3rd will be the real test to see how far we can go this season - A result of any kind at Stamford Bridge will do wonders for the belief at the club that our long trophy drought will end. Let's face it, Chelsea are much like the unstoppable force of the Arsenal circa 2003-04, but they are not invincible...
Did anyone ever think AFC would be thankful to Bolton Wanderers FC ? Jack Wilshire has come on leaps and bounds in 2010. Before, loan moves for Gooner youth players were seen as a gentle exit out of the club - now it can be the making of individuals. Here is hoping the likes of Eastmond, Lansbury and maybe Emmanuel Thomas can get loan spells at mid-level Premier League clubs to further their development.
Is Chamakh the most impactful player in the Premiership at the moment? In his games for Arsenal not only has he scored three goals, but played a hand in an own goal, won two penalties and had two opposition players sent off. His all round play and work rate stands him above others who perhaps may have more ability but lack his drive.
I recall watching a Carling Cup game vs Wigan maybe two years ago - a certain Carlos Vela stood head and shoulders above the rest - even a Liverpool friend of mine sent a text stating that we truly had a special player on our hands. That potential has yet to be fulfilled but the early signs are encouraging this season. Part of the trick is to come on as a sub and score - this will help him keep the momentum. There will be opportunities for him in the next month or so with RVP and the Dane out - if he can make the most of it this could be his breakthrough season.
Squillaci - has anyone noticed he is playing ? For a defender this can only be seen as a compliment. Koscielny on the other hand has been responsible for two of our goals conceded this season. While his overall game is actually quite good he will need time to develop before we can put him up against the likes of Drogba and Rooney with any confidence. Does anyone else think he looks like ex-Arsenal striker Alan Smith? Alan, were you ever a milkman in France?
Finally to the Stadium of Light - last season we dominated at Wearside but came away with nothing. It is another tough fixture up there with Blackburn away - however on present form a win is expected.
