Time for a switch at left back?

Gael Clichy is not man of the moment

Time for a switch at left back?

Gael: Fast yes, but is he actually any good?

There is one song that makes me laugh every time it belts around the E******s,
"Gael Clichy, Clichy,
He's better than Ashley,
He should have been number three...."

This song normally is rolled out in one of two circumstances, 1) Gael has nipped in front of a lumbering winger, run the length of the pitch and crossed the ball straight out of play or 2) Clichy has run the 100m in 10 seconds flat, making up for the fact he's miles out of position and got back to make a "heroic" challenge. Regardless in either situation we are essentially celebrating Gael being really fast rather than any good. Some accuse Theo of having no football brain, well I’m afraid the same should be levelled at Clichy.

Honestly how many times do you remember Clichy putting a good cross into the penalty area? Nope, me either. Next, how many goals can you remember us conceding where you have been left asking yourself, ‘Clichy. what are you doing?!’ Well there was that famous one at St Andrews a couple of seasons ago and then there was the classic backing off effort for United's third last season. How about Blackburn's goal this season? What was he doing, he literally watched Mame Diouf run across him and score.

For a long time I have criticised Clichy for lacking composure and intelligence in either penalty box and Saturday really did take the biscuit. Twice Clichy was dispossessed in our own penalty area - nice one when we are trying to defend a 1-0 lead with 10 men… and then the equaliser. Smash the ball clear and we have three points and top of the league, but no, Gael kicks the ball into our own centre back and bang, it’s 1-1. Well enough is enough, it’s time for Clichy to take a break!

Kieran Gibbs is the future at left back, not only for Arsenal but eventually England. Against Bolton he was excellent defensively and going forward, his crossing is genuinely menacing and he has a cool head when defending. Had it not been for that broken foot I think he would have displaced Clichy last season. But after yet another costly performance from Clichy it must now be time for Wenger to give Gibbs the starting role!
