Okay, this is just a very brief post ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Belgrade next week. And really, I think all I can say is good luck to those who are traveling. What happened to this unfortunate Toulouse fan a year ago looks, on the face of things, to have been a completely random act of violence.
By all accounts, Brice Taton was simply drinking in a Belgrade bar with other Toulouse fans. There is no suggestion that they were acting in a manner that would encourage attack from the local thugs.
So, if I were going to Belgrade, I would be tempted not to drink in the same bar more than once, and certainly consider not spending more than an hour in any bar. It does appear that these fans were targeted because they used the bar more than once, and were Toulouse supporters. Maybe there is more to this than has been revealed, but if so, I can’t find the details anywhere online.
Hopefully this tragic incident will mean more police presence in the areas that Gooners congregate. I have no idea whether or not Belgrade is a worthwhile place to visit under normal circumstances, but I for one am relieved not to be visiting the city next week.
For those who are, this is very much a case of have a safe trip and come back in one piece.
