Chelsea away on Sunday afternoon and no reason at all not to be confident in my book.
I thought I would take time out to look through my crystal ball and see what we might have in store at the Bridge this weekend as I feel most Gooners have developed an inferiority complex where Chelsea are concerned (including some of our players!) which in my book will no longer be valid come the end of the season.
Looking at the way the two sides have started their respective seasons I can’t say that Chelsea have necessarily proved any more than we have. Yes they beat WBA 6-0, a result that we failed miserably to match last weekend, but come on - who have they played really? The answer is Man City and they lost that one. Very rarely in my memory does a team that starts the season with all guns blazing continue in that form and lift the trophy in May. I for one feel Chelsea have beaten very poor teams with ease and proved no more than we did by beating Blackpool and Braga by a combined score of 12-0!
Other positives to take note of is the fact that they will be missing a large part of the creative streak within their squad. Lampard, Kalou and Benayoun are all out injured and will not be involved on Sunday afternoon. When you then look at who they have left in the midfield and out wide it doesn’t smack me in the face with creativity. Essien, Mikel and Ramires are all good players and sound at their jobs but creativity is lacking in all of them and even one of their wide players in Anelka is more of a forward than a wide man who will create anything. The way our defence seems to work I would rather Clichy come up against a speed merchant in Anelka than a small tricky clever creative type who can outwit and out-position him, which I feel Kalou or Benayoun could have done.
The amount of times we switch off in defensive positions and end up getting picked off with a sucker punch is where Arsenal come undone and the lack of Lampard on the pitch gives me more confidence. I could almost sense a ball getting lofted up in the air to Drogba after ten minutes of Arsenal possession, a little nod down to the edge of the area and there is Frank to piledrive one home past whichever muppet is between our goalposts. How frustrating would that be after seeing how crap the guy really is at the World Cup! But no, this nightmare scenario will not be happening on Sunday. So let us be grateful for that.
Too much time is spent looking at the other team in this type of match up. Let’s not get carried away with over-hyping the opposition as we know they are a good team even without a few potential midfield scorers - but in my opinion they are no world beaters.
Let us look more at our own strengths than weaknesses and play to them. We will have more players on the pitch that can keep possession well, we will in all probability also have more players on the pitch that can unlock the opposition’s defence with one pass. And come on, our left back may not be the best at getting his position on the pitch but at least he isn’t a money grabbing little prick who cheats on his wife with any slapper he can get a poke off on Facebook!
We will have a few big players missing ourselves on Sunday, Van the injury prone man, Tommy the tank Vermaelen and of course our main man Cesc ‘Barca bound’ Fabregas. But I still remain confident enough to predict an away win and why not?
We won there a couple of years ago when we were struggling a lot more than we are now and the Chelsea team to me are an aging one that hasn’t really been improved upon over the last three years. They have spent Roman’s millions but don’t seem to have the strength in depth they once had at their disposal. Who plays upfront for them on Sunday if Drogba is injured in the warm up? Name a fourth choice centre half? Who goes in goal if Cech is out again? Show me where they have better back up players than us and I’ll argue the toss on all of them.
I predict we will see a slightly stuttering Chelsea performance, one without much creative spark and one that has very, very little to rely on if necessary from the bench. Look out for at least two to three players who you have never heard of, 17 and 18 year olds they have dug up from some playing field in Chiswick, none of them fit to do up our Jack’s bootlaces.
Be a Gooner, be confident as well as proud and sit back and enjoy an away win! 2-1 to the Arsenal no problem, with Jack and Nasri pulling the strings.
