Firstly and most importantly I have to hold my hands up for having previously slagged Fabianski off for not being up to it, although I'm not quite in a minority of one there am I? But on Sunday he made three absolutely top quality saves at Eastlands and everything else he did showed a confidence which was lacking in past matches. Especially so in comparison to last season.
The first minute low stop he made from Silva showed a really strong arm and the crossfield shot in the second half looked goal bound all the way. One he tipped over looked a tad over-dramatic for my taste, but given the throng of players in front of him he maybe saw this one rather late. Personally I would still prefer a taller keeper but then again I reckon Lukasz is maybe the same size as Pepe Reina who is certainly good enough on the world stage.
I didn't think Lukasz Fabianski had what it takes but quite clearly he is not the useless flapping clown many dismissive and derisive Gooners claimed him to be. With a run in the team and growing confidence he is starting to really look the part. He has of course yet to prove himself against the likes of a Stoke aerial battering, but given time his confidence will hopefully grow enough to cope with that hurdle as well. Perhaps now the pathetic name calling of our keepers will desist.
Although it is far too soon to proclaim him as a top draw keeper I feel he has reached the stage where the odd forthcoming mistake here or there can maybe be forgiven now. Certainly so on the basis that all keepers make mistakes. Right now I see no reason to purchase a keeper in the January transfer window, especially so with Szczesny waiting in the wings. There I've breathed a heresy - I've come out in support of our current number (twenty) one and will no doubt be ostracised as soon as he makes his next cock-up. Whatever. Praise where praise is due should be the order of the day and Fabianski deserves some.
