It all depends on how you look at it

Arsenal are in a really good position

Squillaci – Give him the armband

The current mood surrounding the club is the lowest it's been in some time. Having lost to our bitter rivals on our own turf in the manner we did and having to go into the final Champions League group game without qualification ensured have resulted in this doom and gloom.

The line between success and failure is such a thin one. This time last week morale was high following two solid performances in difficult away fixtures. Yet nothing has really changed in one week. We are still two points behind the leaders with the opportunity to go top for a few hours at least and still in all four competitions.

I sent this message to my mate last week before the Spurs game: I've been feeling even more optimistic about us especially when you consider our club as a whole. We're in a really good position, still in all four competitions, finally we're looking solid. Additionally, we have so many attacking options and if you compare our bench to United or Chelsea's, it's strange to say but we definitely have a stronger squad. Looking at the bigger picture, financially the future can only favour us plus we have so many players out on loan with the next batch of youngsters - JET, Lansbury, Afobe, Aneke and Wellington - soon to make their mark.

My opinion hasn't changed. However, the two recent defeats and those West Brom and Newcastle at home in the league clearly highlight that there are some important issues to be addressed.

* Many have pointed out the lack of a defensive coach. Keown's role at the club during our run to the Champions League final with successive clean sheets was no coincidence.

* Cesc should not be captain, his heart doesn't fully lie at the club. During his absence Squillaci or Vermaelen (when he returns) should be given the armband with a view to holding it.

* We should revert to a 4-4-2 formation at home. It will provide more support for the striker.

* As much as I love Clichy, his defensive frailties are there for all to see. Gibbs should be given a chance.

* Djourou should partner Squillaci in Vermaelen's absence. The statistics of the partnership compared to that of Squillaci-Koscielny speak for themselves.

* Song must stay back. Despite his goals this season, a team of our attacking nature needs a permanent holding midfielder.

* Arshavin should be dropped. His lack of effort is astounding. Making him fight for his place will should hopefully bring the best out of him.

Project Wenger is far from over. However, the Chrismas run-in and January will be crucial to its success.

As I write this on my travels through South East Asia, I'd like to give a shout out to The Official Arsenal Supporters Club of Malaysia. I had the pleasure of watching the Birmingham City home league game at one of their official gatherings in Kuala Lumpur and the fans are truly brilliant. I hope to meet them again soon.
