Derby Defeat Not a Crisis, Just The Loudest of Wake-up Calls

Nasri: Climaxed early and could not keep it up???

(Ed’s note, we received so many submissions after the defeat to Tottenham that I am still trying to get through them all. Here’s another one…)

After five seasons without a trophy, Arsene Wenger has insisted that this squad is ready, that this is the best squad he's ever assembled.

Considering the calibre of player we’ve seen at Arsenal during Wenger’s tenure, it was a very bold claim.

On Saturday 20th November however, this now matured squad had the chance to prove themselves and go top of the league a third of the way through the season, against Spurs no less, who themselves have been getting ideas above their station and insist the gap between the North London clubs is closing.

It was a chance Arsenal looked like they were going to take after easing into a 2-0 lead at half time, yet, they somehow managed to throw it away with the most abject of second half performances. Absolutely awful.

It seems that lessons just haven't been learnt at the E******s as this has happened before, 2-0 up at Wigan last season with ten minutes left and end up losing 3-2, for although Tottenham obviously played some part in turning things around, it was more Arsenal jumping as opposed to being pushed.

We should have comfortably won the game in the second half with all the possession we had, but as usual there was little incisiveness in the final third. It was 'football foreplay' if you will, but Arsenal ultimately couldn't penetrate Spurs and instead ended up getting f***ed themselves.

On the first goal, how is Jermain Defoe winning aerial battles? Why isn’t Sagna flying in competing for the second ball?

Nothing compared to the second goal, which wasn’t a free kick in the first place as Song has just outmuscled Modric, but what the f**k is Fabregas doing? Having your hands at that height in the wall is just moronic.

Following Kaboul's winner Wenger threw his bottle to the turf, the splashes adding to the egg on his face. A couple of minutes later he was crouched by the touchline with a twisted look on his face as if he was being forced to watch as his house was burgled.

It seems the frustration is growing with Mr. Wenger, who looks a lot more agitated these days as he tries to recreate the sides he used to have, but to no avail, and it was clear here.

People think that the ‘Arsenal way’ is all about neat passes 35 yards from goal and trying to walk the ball into the net.

From what I remember of watching the teams of 2002 and 2004 it was about playing intricate passing moves that penetrate the defence, not just to keep the ball away from them. It was about explosive, fast counter attacks. It was about using a defensive platform to absolutely dominate. It was about mercilessly putting teams to the sword.

Would Patrick Vieira and Gilberto have let Tottenham's midfield have a sniff in the second half? Would Thierry Henry have been as lifeless as Chamakh up front? Would Pires and Ljungberg have provided as little support going forward as Arshavin? Most of all, would Tony Adams have sat and watched Tottenham score three soft, soft goals? You very much doubt it.

If they did, they would have given two sh*ts about it, as opposed to this Arsenal team, Cesc aside, who just sauntered off the pitch.

I’m not going to suggest that they are ‘mercenaries’, but if they don’t necessarily wear their shirts with as much pride as the fans in the stand with overpriced replicas do, then they could at least take pride in their own performance.

I’m also not going to suggest it is in anyway a crisis. Two points off the top is not a crisis, it’s just incredibly frustrating because we all know it could be so much better.

I am still confident that this squad can win things. People go on about Spurs having Bale and Van der Vaart, but we’ve got numerous players as good as them.

Three things need to happen.

The players need to cut out the basic defensive errors they’re making every week. You can’t run before you can walk. The back line needs to be a cohesive unit and it needs to know the fundamentals of defending.
