Potpourri of thoughts on the season so far

Spurs for the title? You’re twitching mad Harry!

IKEA chair: Stronger than the Arsenal defence

Another three points gathered away from home then at the weekend.

I must say I thought Arshavin had his best game for some time after being rested in midweek so fair play to Wenger for that as I did question whether or not he was being overly wrapped up in cotton wool with no positive impact on his performances. I will hold on to the hope that this upturn in form continues for the rest of the season and that I get to see more of those fast bursts of pace I witnessed at Villa Park. I have my doubts though.

Another win for our North London rivals over the weekend and they are buzzing at the moment. I like nothing more than Spurs fans getting overly confident as it nearly always ends up with them looking like bigger mugs than ever. Football indeed is a very funny old game.

Think back to around a month or so ago and everyone was saying the title race was done and dusted and that Chelsea would be crowned champions come May no problem at all. It all looks a little different now doesn’t it?

Now the same people are going on about United running away with it and Chelsea never winning another game for all eternity. For me it was obvious that Chelsea would not keep up their stunning early season form, for one simple reason - teams never do.

Think back to 2004-05. Arsenal had gone the whole of the previous season unbeaten and had started the new campaign in similar style. Every man and their dog said that we would win the league again by a mile and that the rest were playing for the runners up spot. We lost one game at Old Trafford, the spell was broken and Chelsea went on to win the title. Teams that set off quickly in August never keep it up until May without a blip in form.

Looking at the fixture lists and taking a close look at who has played who home or away so far I feel United are flattered by the current standings, having not played Chelsea or ourselves home or away as yet. They have played at home to Liverpool and Spurs, and away to City is the only time so far they have been away to one of the recognised top six clubs. We have been to Anfield, Stamford Bridge and Eastlands already, and Chelsea have also played at Anfield as well as Eastlands.

Once Chelsea get Terry, Essien and Lampard back in their starting eleven I feel the people saying United will walk the league now may well be turning blue all over again.

The main part of my talk of form being temporary is aimed squarely at the white and blue half of North London. When you look at the past week or so it is easy to get carried away with the hype surrounding Spurs’ recent results. A shock win at our place followed up by easy qualification from the Champions League group stages and then another comeback win at home to Liverpool in the league.

I can 100% guarantee that this little spell of form is our rivals hitting their peak far too early on in the season and it will not last for much longer. The best run of form they have had in recent memory leaves them lying in 5th place, still four points behind us in the league and six points off top spot. With averaging out what will take place between now and May, they will do very well indeed to retain their Champions League status for another season and as for being considered as genuine title contenders I would liken them to Audley Harrison in that department.

We are still a cut above them, have no doubt in that. Yes, we lost to them at home and yes, we were 2-0 up. But in football so much can go wrong over 90 minutes that you are not guaranteed to beat anybody and for a team to register one win in seventeen years against us is no better than a division two team would do if we played them continuously in cup competitions. Every dog has their day, so to speak.

The main worry for me is our defensive unit as a whole. I certainly was not on my own feeling less than secure when Villa came back to 2-1 and then 3-2 on Saturday. We look less solid than a self assembled chair from IKEA and when I assemble them that is saying something!

Clichy does frustrate me more and more with every passing game, he just seems to be so slow to react to danger yet can cover 100 metres in less than time it takes to say ‘we’ve conceded again’. That doesn’t add up does it? A sprinter that has no footballing brain I guess. It is sad to say it but when we swapped a c*** for a c*** with Chelsea a few years ago we didn’t have the cover we all thought we did at the time. The left back that plays for the Blues is a cut above what we have been left with, plus the c*** we swapped him for is now captain of Spurs. Good deal that if ever I saw one!

Good news on the Eboue front (in the squad to face Wigan) and let’s hope for a slightly more solid display from our boys in the League Cup to set as up nicely for a possible two legged semi against United! Who says the League Cup is pointless?
