Attack rather than defence the problem for a change

We created all but zip

Nasri: Subdued

Another opportunity to put down a marker for the season has passed. This poor league chugs along with challengers each taking their turn at the top, never having the quality to remain there once reached, let alone pull away. Much of our defaults this season (and last, and before that, etc) have fallen at the feet of defensive frailties. Last night, for once, our creativeness was called into question. We created all but zip.

A poor game. A poor advertisement for a league without a great side, and in which an average United are still unbeaten. There was an early desire to stand up to United, and tackles flew in where they'd usually be avoided. The challenges came at a cost, as our incisive attacking game was off. No composure. Nervous. Aware of the occasion. Passes astray.

Subdued. Even Nasri, stuck cold out on the right. One chance to break saw Song lose possession at the edge of their box. If Wilshere was in his position, and Song holding back where Jack was, our side would have more common sense balance to it, and a chance would probably have been created. I'll say as little about Arshavin as the amount he contributed warrants.

United were slightly better. Perhaps. Although they were certainly fortunate in the manner in which their win was secured. Clichy was becoming accustomed to Nani running at him one on one by this stage, and the unprotected full back was unfortunate to see his block deflect into the path of Park. Who only scores against us, and duly obliged.

Coming just before the break, the goal was a huge blow for our brittle confidence. It resulted in a huge lack of belief amongst the players coming out for the second half. As if they knew the two goal haul was already beyond them, even though just a draw would have been welcome.

United sat back and waited for our moves to break down, before trying to kill the game off on the break. Sound familiar? The only surprise is that a second didn't follow, especially with Rooney passing up on his customary goal against The Arsenal. It doesn't matter now, but it might next time around, and it would be nice to travel to Old Trafford without them being gifted a penalty simply because they claim one.

The only chance of note fell to Chamakh, as Van der Saar spilt a Nasri effort across goal. The Moroccan reacted slower than a predator would, and then lacked the composure to take his time once the tap in was destined to be blocked.

Van Persie, Fabregas and Walcott should bring more to a game when coming on. One wasn't match fit, one wasn’t fit fit, and Theo leaned back and smashed a quarter chance on the volley high over the bar. Lacklustre.

A one nil defeat at Old Trafford is no disgrace. On its own, it's not a damming indication of our title ambitions. What's gone before means the questions are louder.

Likewise those doubts slung Clichy's way. I actually thought our left back dealt well with Nani running at him time after time, often winning the tackle. That was until I turned on Twitter which had him held up as culprit number one. He's not been thought of in the same light since that title conceder at St Andrews, and I wonder if the error and consequences of that day have stayed with him, as they have the fans.

Arsene cited the pitch when discussing the loss post match. I'd rather not have heard such comments, even if they were true. It's not why we lost. I understand Arsene not laying into the team in public, but I hope he's not as lenient in private, or else things will never change.

Three Positives.

Wilshere bringing Fletcher to the ground, and later telling him to mind his own as the Scot tried to officiate proceedings, as if to say 'we're only trying to win ugly like you suggest. Ugly.'

Fat Sam being sacked, and the fact he called Fergie to have a little cry about it. May the downward spiral continue.

And a decent debut in a huge game for the future of Arsenal goalkeeping. Szczesny made a vital Schmichel save once more, and his handling was confident throughout. I'd like to see him kick the ball further than the halfway line, but if Fabianksi really was injured, it will be interesting to see who starts against Stoke on Saturday.

Saturday. Another chance to go top of this forgiving league. A win at home to Stoke should see us regain first place ahead of United traveling to Stamford Bridge.

It's what’s so bloody frustrating about our regular lapses this season. The league will not be won by a great side.

It wouldn't take much for that side to be us.

It beats me how smaller teams can beat chelc and utd while we cant. Though d ans isn't das fetched. Utd and chelc predict our game so accurately they knw what our players will do even before our players knw. This calls 4 a change in tactics even if its only against d big teams. Mayb next time we shd concentrate more on defence, let them bring d game to us then hope 4 a goal from a counter or a set piece. After all, thats how they play us. In this way, if things dont go accordin to plan, we get a point. But wenger is a one trick pony. So expect d winless streak to continue. In so frustrated.

Blaming the pitch showed a lack of class from Wenger and frankly stunk of desperation yes it was crap but Old Trafford is never a flat surface and the fact is Man U played on it too and won. Fergie is well aware of our strengths and weakness which is why united stopped us playing last night. Tactically Fergie got it spot on, it was cynical and it was clinical but it got the result. On the other hand Wenger displayed his inability to adapt to a situation where his team couldnt play and were strangled in the last quarter of the pitch. Once we were one nil down we were doomed as any attempts at our usual style of play would only leave us vulnerable to a knock out counter attack. Chucking on Cesc and Van Persie and not drastically altering the way we played was just a joke and I’m sure has caused serious damage to the team morale by showing how little impact these players created. Wenger just doesn’t seem to have an answer to teams that can defend as a unit and that to me says it all. We will never compete with the big boys as long as he refuses to rethink his strategy at crucial times. Sadly fergie has done just that on many many occasions and that’s why he still wins big time and time again.

It was such a poor united that we faced and we were just that little bit more poor. Still I feel that that game was not a complete disheartening experience just because it shows how awful our opponents are this year. Strange that both Arsenal and Man U couldn’t keep position of the ball Barca should be pissing themselves laughing at such an amateur display. Still 2 points off top and we have player harder games that the Chavs and the Mancs have as of yet so it’s not all doom and gloom just yet. I feel there is going to be a lot more ups and downs for us and the other top 4 or so clubs before the end of the season. It’s not over till May Gooners.

It's a simple thing, but it could work for us... but I have to agree that 'long range' shots may be the answer, if teams line up with 8 people on the edge of their box, have a shot from 30 yards out, it might go in, it might ricochet around, it might fly into row z... and keep doing it... eventually, the defence is going to have to step up in an attempt to charge down the shots, that's when bigger gaps can open up for us to exploit teams with the intricate moves...

Tactics were all wrong. It was obvious that ManUre were going to swamp their defence and midfield and then occasionally hoof it forward when our sideways passing petered out. This was an evening for all our lot to turn up and play. So, who forgot to tell Dwarf and Rosicky? Why does Song think that he has suddenly become a cross between Pele and Bergkamp? He has not got the ability and it regularly out of position when we give the ball away. Why did Sanga and Clichy persist in slinging over aimless high crosses? Sorry guys, not good enough. I will be bringing a sofa along to the game on Saturday so I can hide behind it.

I can see why we don't shoot more often from outside the box because the efforts last night were tame at best. We came up against a good back four that know exactly how to defend against us through the knowledge of their manager and that's why we struggled to find a way through. It would have to be 'eye of a needle' passing and it wasn't to be. They were then happy to hit us on the break to score which very nearly happened. Unfortunately our manager doesn't have the tactical nouse to change anything so Fergie was able to stick to his usual Plan A and pick up the points. The same will happen against Chelski, they will allow us possession, confident they can defend against us in the final third then try and hit us on the break or with a set piece. It's not rocket science but effective. Let's just hope our 5-a-side football in and around their box is successful. On the goalkeeper situation, it's the first time in a long time I've felt confident in an Arsenal goalkeeper before kick off when I saw 'Chesney's' name on the team sheet. There is something about this lad, he has a presence, his body language and aura give you confidence. If you're good enough you're old enough, let's give him a run in the side and I'm sure he'll blossom.

We can't even score against Unitted or Chelesea let alone get a result. Is that 3 visits now without scoring at Old Trafford. No result in 11 against them either. Not good enough!

What concerns me is only our goalie stepped up to the plate......Why was Nasri played wide? Does Wenger make these strange decisions just to show us he can ?
