If it wasn’t enough to be second in the league with Christmas just around the corner and the brilliant form of Samir Nasir this season, Arsenal fans, after a period relative quiet have come up with a top original chant based on a long forgotten 80s ditty, in a manner that recaptures the last days of Highbury when ‘Tom Hark’ was revamped into a chant about Thierry Henry. The ’na na, na na, na na, na na, na-na-na’ of the new ‘Samir Nas-a-ri’ chant as all 80s pop pickers know plagiarizes KC and the Sunshine Band’s 1983 number one hit single ’Give It Up’, a move which is symbolic for two reasons. Firstly, if you said the words ’KC’ to a Gooner at any point over the last two seasons it would have conjured up depressing images of Phil Brown and his backward ungracious footballing philistines from the north. Now, like gangsta rappers, we’re reclaiming the phrase that was once the bane of the lives for our kind, for ourselves. ‘KC’ is now a part of us. Secondly the significance of ’Give It Up’ to its author was a return to form after a barren period. KC and the Sunshine band with their flares and disco boogie in a way epitomised the 1970s, though with the ’Disco Sucks’ backlash of the new decade they were yesterday’s men by 1983. The succcess of ‘Give It Up’s’ march to the top of the charts (in fact unlike KC’s string of hits in the 70s this was his only UK Number One hit) may hopefully be replicated by Arsenal with their first title since mid way through the previous decade, or who knows? Maybe the prize that eluded us in the noughties - The Champions League.
In fact maybe there’s something in this? So I now shall endeavour to see what else among KC’s back catalogue may be adopted by the Arsenal faithful.
First up is KC’s first UK top 10 smash hit ’That’s the Way I Like It’
‘Fabianski to Gael Clichy,
Fabregas to Alex Song,
Jacky Wilshere to Arshavin,
Van Persie to Chamakh
GOAL! Aargh…
THAT’S THE WAY, AHA AHA, WE LIKE IT AHA AHA!
Next up with Emmanuel Eboue’s rise from Premiership pauper to Premiership riches comes an adaptation of KC’s 1976 US number one hit ’Shake Shake Shake (Shake Your Booty)'.
‘Ahhh….Sheikh, Sheikh, Sheikh……
Sheikh, Sheikh, Sheikh…….
Sheikh Eboue! Sheikh Eboue!’
In honour of Spurs’ possible relocation to Stratford is an interpretation of ‘Please Don’t Go’ - KC’s last US number one in 1980, also a number one hit a dozen years later for nineties one hit wonders KWS (who contrary to popular belief didn’t rise to fame after coming 2nd on a dyslexic version of the X-Factor)
‘Spurs we hate you so
and we want you to know,
that we, wont miss you scum,
the minute you crawl out your hole,
please do go, do go-ooooh, do go away’
Maybe KC‘s first US number one, later remixed by Bamboogie for a 1997 UK number one hit single
‘Get Down Tonight’ can be remade for a dig at ‘Wess Tam’s’ attempt at Premiership survival.
‘David Sullivan…..
Avram Grant…..
Get down you’re shite!
Get down you’re shite!
OK, I hear you, maybe after those attempts it’s about time I ‘Give It Up’ too!
