Time to consider the positives

An Objective Gooner Brain Dump

Wilshere – Good already and so much more to come

I’ve seen a lot of, shall we call them ‘constructive’ articles on onlinegooner.com recently. I’ll be totally honest and say that my initial reaction to such pieces is to be protective of all things Arsenal. Therefore, I typically get frustrated with most articles that want Wenger to be sacked, think our squad is garbage and our tactics are one dimensional. This is probably due to my incredibly bright outlook on most things in life, particularly my beloved Gunners. That said I wouldn’t consider myself an ‘AKB’ or someone who can’t consider anything Arsenal without bias – just someone who tries to focus on the positives.

For what it’s worth I have been encouraged by many things this season, so here’s a few from the glass is half full brigade.

Fabianski – since his full run in the side started (something he has never truly had before) he has made one big mistake against Newcastle (which on another day the team would have bailed him out by scoring a goal or two) and despite what the ‘experts’ say, has made potential point saving interventions at Man City, Wolves and Everton to name a few. For those who say he costs us 15 points a season – he is definitely well in credit and has made as few mistakes as Hart and Cech since his run.

Djourou – has shown his class and composure in many games this year. It is he plus one other when we are fully fit at centre back now.

Wilshere – has added depth to the midfield and has developed quicker than any of us dared hope, with still so much more to come.

Clichy – his performances still aren’t quite at the level of pre-2008 but recently I feel he’s coming back to form. His game against Man City at home recently was probably his best in seasons.

Nasri – added directness and goals to his game and could become a genuine world class player if his evolution continues.

Walcott – still divides opinion but has definitely improved his composure in front of goal and has become more intelligent with his movement. We still don’t use him to his full potential yet.

Sagna – in the last two months he has been incredibly solid. The best right-back in the league.

Koscielny – this may make you spit your drink all over the computer but I’ve seen enough of Kos to believe that with another season under his belt he will be a fantastic 3rd choice CB for us. He has impressive awareness and anticipation and is still only 25 so plenty to come.

Battling qualities – the performances at home to Chelsea and at Blackburn, Wolves, Everton, Villa and to an extent Sunderland have finally meant match reporters have had to think of something new to write instead of reeling off the old clichés about a soft underbelly, getting out-muscled up north etc.

Squad health (touch wood) – we are in pretty good shape in terms of injuries (touch wood again). For those giving Denilson, Bendtner, Squillaci and Arshavin stick after the Leeds game, please bear in mind these are squad players. Denilson is 6th choice in central midfield – the equivalent of Darron Gibson or Josh McEachran. Squillaci is 4th choice at centre back – the equivalent of Jonny Evans or Jeffrey Bruma.

Why can’t we get behind the players who take the pitch, irrespective of our preconceived ideas about some of them? Yes Bendtner can come across as arrogant, Arshavin looks lazy, Denilson does pass sideways quite a lot, Diaby is infuriatingly inconsistent (when he’s fit), Squillaci probably hasn’t settled as quickly as we’d like etc etc, but we are The Arsenal and we do things the right way – which should mean not booing our players (thereby avoiding another hugely embarrassing Eboue situation) but supporting them through thick and thin. The same should go for the manager too. With 29 managerial sackings in the English leagues so far this season we are held up as standard bearers for patience and stability. Yes five years without a trophy is a lean spell, but relatively speaking isn’t nearly as bad as the media makes out. Wenger deserves our patience for showing loyalty when he could have run to Real Madrid or the French Federation after the Invincibles when his stock was at its highest. Rough with the smooth and all that.

This leads me onto my final point. We’re challenging on all fronts – irrespective of what is happening at other clubs, the general quality of the league and some poor performances, we are well placed in all competitions.

Up the Gunners.

Lets bring back a standing area where fans can sing and enjoy the games more.

£10 million for a 3rd choice centre back who may come good in a season or two...great business

I agree with the comment about our home support situation and how it needs to be addressed. It's no co-incidence that our away form is better this season. Our away support is awesome. You hear from so many fans frustrated with those around them at home games and the fact that they want to sing and get behind the team, but stand out like sore thumbs if they do. This is football, not the opera or some corporate package which includes a trip to a Lloyd Weber in the evening. Fair enough, respect that some people want to sit in relative peace. Also respect that thousands of fans would rather be in with like-minded fans being more vociferous. The REDsection (block 5/6) works well in this respect, but it needs to be extended. People need a choice of the type of section they sit in rather than all being thrown in together. (I read somewhere an idea of a season ticket swap shop. Hmmmm.)

Kol is utter dross. Every ball placed in behind him is like a hand grenade. But as you say he is ONLY 25. And then you claim he has the potential to become an excellent 3rd choice cb??? If he has the potential to be 3rd choice one day in the distant future then how is it he starting every game fir us now?? Answer= French+cheap. Arsene knows

Good post and generally agree. I would like to comment on a point from merse10 regarding the home support, which is definately lacking sometimes. I would like the club to take some responsibility for the lack of atmosphere and vocal support at home matches. I have a theory its about who sits where in the stadium. When they sell the tickets, it is quite right and proper for families and young and old people alike to be in areas where they should not be subject to behaviour that may offend them, also though i think the club could sort the fans into areas where more lively fan type behaviour may occur and a more relaxed stewarding policy is in place to encourage vocal team support.

Not an AKB? After reading this article I think you should reassess that statement because it was so rose-tinted I'd guess that even Saddam Hussein's former Defence Minister Comical Ali would have been embarrassed with it's optimism!!

A refreshing article. I think the main frustration this season is that we know when the players are up for it we can beat anyone - the questions are raised when we lose to teams due to a perceived lack of effort which I think is the one thing that really annoys fans of any team, no matter the league or position in it. As you say - we are still in with a shout in every competition, if we still remain trophy less at the end of the season then it'll be time to raise questions, until then support the team and the manager and help us win, we all have a role to play, not just the players.

Agree 100%. I also think our away form is better than our home form due to our woeful home support. Generally the only noise is moans and graons and it doesn't take long for this to set in. We need to create a stadium fll of support. If we go behind we support and encourage not get on the players back. It doesn't help and it will never helping giving one of our own stick. For a first season Kos has done well.

well said mate.... for me we should be plauying walcott in his natural position through the middle up top with either RVP or chamack playing slightly deeper and then the obvious midfield of cesc, song and jack with nasri drifting....

Bullshit.Wenger didnt go to Real Madrid because he wouldnt last 6 months there. They want results they want trophies not 3rd or 4th place finishes. He lost the plot in 2008.How desperate has he become that our first priority this season is a cup we couldnt be bothered about for the last 14 years

Totally agree, great perspective.... The frustration is we are a few players away from a team to match our amazing club of values, stadium, colony etc... Nasri a midfielder being our top scorer says all u need to know that we don't have a striker at the club, forwards yes goalscorer no! And at centre back we all know that not one of them even verm would play for any of our prem or CL rivals, one other bright note is szesny who at 6'5 looks the best since seaman... Come on u reds at upton pk
