At this present time in the world of football, those in the fields of reporting, punditry and basically anyone who is literate enough to write for The Sun are salivating over the prospect of United’s so far unbeaten record this season. The two words of ‘Manchester’ and ‘unbeaten’ are now inseparably intertwined into every sentence of footballing commentary. The worry being that if someone doesn’t beat them soon the two words might actually become synonymous, “Yesterday in the pub, I went the whole night Manchestered at pool.” As irritating as this is becoming it is simply hiding the fact that those who are currently first in the league can be toppled, and not by City.
To compare this United team to the Invincibles in any way is an insult to that great team. The game at the Spuds on Sunday simply highlighted the fact that this was a United team that were just, just, experienced enough not to lose but were woefully inadequate in every other way. In contrast our slick exuberant performance at the weekend against West Ham was just the tonic needed after two poor cup performances. It was a cracking performance with Arsenal managing to do what they need to be doing, making cannon fodder of the teams in the bottom half, instead of losing to them.
Basically I can deduce from all the evidence provided so far this season that our first eleven is better than United’s. The problem being that our first eleven can stay fit for about as long as it takes for you to read this article. Yet, if by some miracle we do manage to stay fit for the foreseeable future than the fixture list coming up, minus the Barcelona games, actually makes for happy reading.
As anyone who watches the La Liga highlights will know just how ridiculously good that Catalan lot are, it is therefore quite hard to imagine us progressing. Optimistically everyone can have an off day but sadly for us the game is over two legs. Anyway, the unkind CL draw aside the next seven or so PL fixtures do look as if a fully fit Arsenal team can steamroll their way through them (assuming with trepidation that the Spud away game is moved for our visit to Wembley).
These next two months will deliver perhaps the ultimate verdict on whether AW’s third Arsenal team have the capability to match the achievement of the others and turn style into silverware. This is the time for Cesc, RVP and Nasri to stretch their legs and turn quality performances into a large quantity of results. These three’s form and fitness will be essential for our quest for glory, because make no mistake, Manchester United are going to drop points and we will need to be there to pounce.
And as for them going unbeaten, we all know how precarious an unbeaten record can be, and if Yakubu - I think it was Yakubu - had scored that last minute one on one against Lehmann away at Portsmouth or Van Horseface had scored that penalty... but the fact is they didn’t. Arsenal’s unbeaten season was an astonishing feat, an achievement made by one of the most gifted teams ever assembled. And for all these people to compare this Manc team with that one is laughable.
I hate making predictions, as so often they are wrong, but going into the Chelsea game one could feel the air of vulnerability around our opponents and it is that same vulnerability that surrounds this entire league. Therefore I predict that the Mancs will not go unbeaten and that this league is there for the taking in a similar way that Chelsea were. The top spot is vulnerable, and it’s time the current team start channeling the invincible.
