Online Ed: Unambitious Wigan put to the sword

RVP – Another football for the kids

It says something when the opposition team are trying to eat the clock when they are behind. Talk about damage limitation. The extent of Wigan’s ambitions on their visit to Arsenal points out that this is a team highly likely to be playing Championship football next season. It also highlights how cheap the points dropped at the DW Stadium two days after beating Chelsea in late December really were.

Still, it was a much stronger Arsenal line-up that took the field yesterday. So many chances were created, it could have been close to double figures, but a lot of shots seemed to go straight to the Wigan keeper. However, Wenger’s men did what they should be expected to do, which is make easy work of poor opposition.

Not having caught ‘Match of the Day’ yet, it sounds like that’s exactly what Manchester United did too. There is a belief that as United are not the side they were and have been getting away with it this season due to the drop in quality generally amongst the top sides, they will not actually improve. And crucially can be caught. It’s a valid argument, but there is another which suggests results create a momentum of their own and that the more United remain undefeated, the stronger their self-belief and determination will become.

Until they face them in April, all Arsenal can do is keep the pressure on, which means winning matches and creating a momentum of their own. In this light, the cup competitions do matter. I was told yesterday morning that Ivan Gazidis has instructed Arsene Wenger that he has to win something this year. Doesn’t matter what, just win a trophy. If this is true, it will be interesting to see who lines up for the second leg of the Carling Cup semi final on Tuesday evening.

Given that Huddersfield on Sunday is the subsequent fixture, I can foresee a stronger line-up for Ipswich than the FA Cup fourth round, especially with Everton visiting only two days later. You would imagine we’ll see Arshavin, Denilson, Bendtner and co starting at the weekend. Whether or not the Gazidis story is true, I cannot say, but I hope to God it is. Signs at last of the club’s key employee getting some direction from his employers. The pre-season tour that looks likely this summer is another indication that Arsene is not quite the king of his castle any longer, although I am sure that these matters have been discussed rather than forced upon him, as he is effectively a director himself in all but name.

Robin van Persie could afford to miss from the penalty spot and still nab a hat-trick. Theo Walcott did well to set up his third goal, but could have scored three himself. It was that kind of afternoon. There will be matches when the side cannot afford to be so profligate in front of goal.

A final thought. Wigan beat Arsenal 3-2 last April, coming from 2-0 down. Which begs the question why they took off a forward and put on a defender for one second half substitution. They know Arsenal are fragile if they concede a goal. Strange. Still, take the three points and don’t argue. Let’s hope momentum is maintained in the cups to set the team up for the visit of Everton.

I agree about the negativity surrounding Arsenal. This article wasn't massively negative and didn't saying anything inherently wrong, but it just didn't focus enough on the positive aspects emerging from yesterday's performance, I guess is the root of certain comments on here. And let's face it, there are so many positive aspects emerging at the moment I wonder if our fans appreciate what a fantastic amount we have going for us. The vast majority of clubs would swap positions with us in a flash, but we moan. Some imbeciles even cry for our manager's head - astonishing. You're labelled an AKB if you defend our manager. As though there's no middle ground. Yes, we all get massively frustrated & the shortcomings have been there for all to see (and the impending implosions have not always been unforseeable.) We pile into the manager/team when it goes wrong, looking for scapegoats to blame, but seem reluctant to heap praise when it's equally warranted. Anyway, let's not divide into factions, let's stick together like true Gooners and roar the boys towards the finish lines on all four fronts. (Who else can do that?) VCC, VTH, EIE.

This editorial was bang on the money, as it always is. Kevin, please don't change your style to please those in love with AW. Speak the truth, even if these neanderthals can't handle the truth and get themselves in a tiz over it. The last issue of the Gooner was disappointing, because you were compromised and wrote what you thought people wanted to hear, rather than what you actually believe. The entire process of journalism is to express your opinions, and if others can't accept that, maybe they should read sources other than the Online Gooner (or the fanzine itself, for that matter).

Mr Editor, Arsenal were superb yesterday yet, when I read your article, I don't see a single word of praise for the team. Para 1 - Wigan were crap. Arsenal dropped points at Wigan against this crap team. Para 2 - Arsenal made easy work of poor opposition and should have scored more. (There's me thinking their keeper made at least 4 excellent saves.) Para 3 - Man Utd blah blah blah Para 4 & 5 - Wenger needing "guidance" from the Club. Para 6 - lots of chances missed. Para 7 - Wigan beat us last year. Arsenal are "fragile". Nope, can't see any negativity there. What was I thinking?

Andy - The last line of your comment sums it up 'Lets try to enjoy it while we can!!' So really even you think that something could go wrong in the coming months at Arsenal (in terms of failure to win a trophy(ies) again)? Good victory on Saturday but you and others complaining of negativity get your heads out of the sand and have a small dose of realism coffee! Do you avoid watching/listening to the news because that has negative pieces in it? If there are negative comments on your appraisal at work do you cry, stick your fingers in your ears and pretend it was so? Do you not shout at/hit your kids when they're doing something wrong because you don't want them to feel bad? GET A LIFE!!

Guess u can only comment on whats put in front of you eh? Momentum is the key word cos' thats all it is, still short in positions across the team, still carrying players who are not worthy of the shirt, the managerial performance overall should address this PLUS the rudimentary batterings of lowly teams! And there you have it really, AW has finally realised that playing stronger teams in the lesser competitions provides the key to it all. 'Momentum' its a layer, a foundation of confidence that spreads like a ripple on a dead pond! Could have done this 5 seasons ago? What an oversight, could be a blessing in disguise for our manager though!

The Wigan encounter was one of our best displays of the season. Cesc was an imperious as TA. Percy was on fire. Jack and One Song were magic. I loved the game. I loved the atmosphere. The stupid smile on my face is still there. Bring it on!!!

Negative.. because Arsenal are so close. And will probably fail again because AW refuses to spend just a little bit of dosh.

There was a recent mention in the latest Gooner about the perceived negativity of the fanzine. I do tend to agree, however I feel the main issue is the negativity of the editorial piece and the post match online editorials. I thought that we were absolutely superb yesterday yet from this article there really is only a mention of how bad Wigan were. Granted, there have been time when the editorial deserves to criticise the team and club but please, when we play like we did yesterday, give them some credit and lets 'revel' in the teams success. We're a team challenging on all four fronts playing incredible football. Lets try to enjoy it while we can!!

Angelo, 'An almost entirely negative article'? Are you sure? Perhaps you should read the item again, but this time with your glasses on.

Yesterdays game made me so angry. We battered Wigan with our full team out. This was tha same Wigan who 3 weeks ago held us to a 2-2 draw. The difference is at home Wenger plays a strong team but away he plays our reserve team.Terrible management. Those two points dropped at Wigan could turn out to be crucial at the end of the season. No more rotation Please

what a surprise - an almost entirely negative article about a great performance, with a clean sheet, a hat trick and loads of great football. I don't know why you bother going.

Squad rotation in the modern game with the top Clubs has to be the single most difficult art for any manager. Fergusmoan seemingly has it spot on right now, but maybe that's because he has no need of a domestic Cup. Having a fit squad at the end of the season isn't totally accidental, it's an art.

Wenger is now saying he might NOT sign a CB.Well we might as well take the premiership trophy to Old Trafford. What is wrong with our manager?Has he looked at the table and seen we will finish top 4 and said i will stick with the CB's i have rather than spend £15-20m to win the title. The worse thing ever about Wenger is his bloody stubborness.

  15. Jan 23, 2011, 8:40 #1181

    AW get CB

Kevin an easy win against a woeful Wigan just 3 weeks after that debacle at Wigan.Anyone who still defends Wengers decision to make eight changes up there just look what a strong line up did to them yesterday.Yes Wigan were woeful against our first 11 but against our B team we made them look good.If we lose the title by 1 or 2 pts we will look back at that December night with anger.RVP got a fine hat-trick but the heartbeat of the performance yet again was Cesc.Nasri has taken the plaudits this season but Cesc is truly world class. the two passes for the 2nd and 3rd goals were sublime.Sagna really is back to form. And another clean sheet for Szczesny. What a change to feel totally relaxed with an Arsenal keeper in recent times.Lets hope Wengeris not stupid enough to reinstate Fabianski
