Joey Barton: A Walking Embodiment of Everything that’s wrong with Britain today

Newcastle midfielder’s ‘challenge’ on Diaby was nothing compared to some of his assaults

Joey Barton: A Walking Embodiment of Everything that’s wrong with Britain today

Barton: Cigarette, anyone?

It occurred to me during the debacle of the last World Cup that the nation’s footballlers can often tell a lot about the nation’s soul. The pre-war and early post war generation had the modest genius and heroism of Sir Stanley Matthews, Tom Finney and Joe Mercer. The baby boomers had the class and gentleman spirit of the two Bobbies - Charlton and Moore. For us children of Thatcher and Tony Blair - sadly we have a greedy, less than attractive slightly rotund ginger man who uses prostitutes called Wayne and in John Terry we have the son of a drug dealing father and a shoplifting mum who between them were too stupid to even put a surname on their offspring’s birth certificate. However, what of the man who doesn’t even measure up to the professional and moral standards of these two wretched products of broken Britain? Joey Barton – born in Liverpool just weeks before Alan Bleasdale’s magnificient ‘Boys from the Black Stuff’ via BBC2 told the Nation of the decline in its midst in the Autumn of 1982 – has rarely disguised his disdain for the produce of the ‘Golden Generation’ of English football and their overshadowing of his extremely modest talents. In the aftermath of England’s quarter final defeat in 2006 Barton had wrote ‘England did nothing in that World Cup, so why were they bringing books out? 'We got beat in the quarter-finals. I played like s***. Here's my book.' Who wants to read that?’ His outburst of righteous indignation is largely disingenuous however, it’s more in the vein of pure bitterness – after all if England is going to showcase limited talent and limited technique to the world in major championships Barton obviously feels he’s the man to fly the flag for old Albion. Also – if Stevie G et al are going to write books about footballing failure Barton probably feels they should at least provide lift up flaps to allow people of his reading age a chance to understand what you’re putting into print.

I’ve always scoffed how in the last ten years or so the media have always thrown members of the underclass in our direction to (often wrongly) blame for all of society’s ills – be it Jade Goody, Lady Sovereign, Vicky Pollard, fictional characters from the massively overrated Channel 4 comedy Shameless, those who go on Jeremy Kyle or the nation’s moral panic about the ‘hoodies’ that inhabit our town centres. However every time Joey Barton’s ugly boat race crosses my TV or newspaper I can’t help feeling the lights are rapidly going out all over this once great nation I inhabit. As the downturn chunders on, the working classes of this nation are an increasingly beleaguered bunch in relation to its effects. However, as throughout history, rather than a class battle between the haves and the have nots, the lower orders have often been fighting a battle between the ‘proletarians’ and what Karl Marx in his writings often referred to as the ‘lumpenproletarians’ – the latter being in his words the ‘refuse of all classes… swindlers, confidence tricksters, brothel-keepers… and other flotsam of society’. They were originally highlighted by Marx as a class that appeared during the time of the French revolution who allied themselves with the ‘ancien regime’ and often deliberately worked against the cause of enlightenment and social betterment for the masses. The distinction between the two is largely thus – to be a ‘prole’ is a matter of circumstance which people are often born into and in many cases often powerless with regard to, but in essence an honest member of society. To be a ‘lumpenprole’ however is a matter of mentality – and one which he has every control over.

To me, the charmless and ugly Joey Barton has always personified every aspect of this residuum class of the lumpenproletariat that blights the everyday life of the decent folk of these Islands. Barton is the criminal class personified – just look at this thug’s record: He received his first red card in 2003 for arguing with a referee in the tunnel – not even on the field of play – when his side was 3-0 down against Tottenham. So missed by his team mates was Barton that 10 man Manchester City went on to win 4-3. Not that Barton has ever had the ability to build a constructive rapport with his colleagues - at City’s 2004 Christmas party he stubbed out a lit cigar in a youth team player’s eye and in July 2008 was kicked out of Manchester City for committing assault occasioning ABH against team mate Ousmane Dabo. Ordinary members of the public are no more safe from this troglodyte either - in May 2005 he broke a 35-year-old pedestrian's leg while driving his car through Liverpool City Centre at 2AM. In the summer of 2005, Barton was sent home from a pre-season tournament in Thailand after assaulting a 15-year-old Everton supporter and had to be restrained from attacking the boy further by his team mate Richard Dunne. Just over a year later Barton was fined by the FA for exposing his backside to Everton fans – quite probably in order to give his brain some fresh air. The fact that Barton had left secondary school with seven GCSEs to his name is pretty much conclusive proof that exams really are too easy these days.

Barton’s crowning glory however came in May 2008 when he was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment in relation to an incident where CCTV footage showed Barton punching a man twenty times causing him to lose consciousness, as well as breaking a teenager’s teeth. Lest we forget also that Joey’s younger brother Michael Barton and his cousin Paul Taylor are both currently serving time for a racially motivated murder committed with a pick axe against young black Arsenal fan Anthony Walker who had been studying for his A-Levels at the time and innocently out on a date with his white girlfriend. The latter of course isn’t directly Joey Barton’s fault – but let’s just say such rancid racist attitudes are often borne from the family one grows up in. Rotten apples after all barely fall too far from the tree that spawned them.

Despite being such an odious creature however, Joey Barton is by no means society’s loser. In a nation where nearly three million could be on the dole by this Easter, smug Joey Barton on his hefty wage is one of the ones who are winning in this world. Where the everyday working man fears for his job and how the merest slip on the behaviour front can see him fall into the mire, Barton can get away with what he has wreaked on others over the years and can still lord it over the rest of us. However much you hate Barton’s guts, he sure as hell doesn’t wish he was you. And how is this possible? Well because like all of the ugly henchmen of this post credit crunch world – be it the men the loan sharks send round to break your kneecaps when you’ve missed a payment, the cat burglar who steals an old man’s savings, the pusher who gets bored unemployed youth hooked on narcotics or the pimp trying to find a woman that’s weak – Joey Barton is armed with nothing more than an empty head and a moral vacuum with the simple aim of bringing back results for his unscrupulous master, the equally scummy Alan Pardew who in his guise as West Ham manager resembled nothing more than a Rottweiler owning arsehole sitting in a North Woolwich cess pit boozer moaning about foreigners taking our jobs and recommending that the answer to all of life’s little conundrums is to dish out a good kick in the bollocks.

Though Arsenal fans’ opinions are often split on Abu Diaby’s abilities as a player, when you bear in mind his record with injuries and the career threatening leg break by Sunderland’s Ryan Smith in 2006, his angry reaction to Barton’s disgusting challenge is entirely understandable. However – like many of the beleaguered masses when they’ve had enough of being bullied and threatened by Barton’s lumpenprole ilk on council estates the nation over – Phil Dowd personifies the cowardice of the authorities and sides with the thugs, as well as failing to be consistent when the boot is on the other foot. ‘Chesney’ – seeing that Arsenal are going to be the team kicking off after a goal is scored against them – rightly refuses to give the ball to Barton. Kevin Nolan, Barton’s fellow gang member then attacks ‘Chesney’ for not giving in to the demands of his criminal thug friend – and Phil Dowd, the coward in authority, then gives ‘Chesney’ a booking for not giving in to their thuggish demands.

People might view this piece as sour grapes because Barton ultimately stopped my side taking three points after we were cruising four nil at half time. They might think I’m being a bit Daily Mail in oversimplifying deep social problems by laying the blame on one particular thuggish footballer – maybe they’re right. But society today is ugly and these days I seem to see little Joey Bartons everywhere. And if you need me to put my mentality for you in a nutshell then here goes – when Joey Barton’s kith and kin murdered Anthony Walker, the victim’s mother had plead forgiveness stating ‘I have to forgive them. I can't feel anger and hatred, because that is what killed my son’. All I can say is that she’s a much bigger person than I’ll ever be and must admit that I’m a petty and vindictive little man in comparison. I loathe and despise both of the weasels, enjoy the fact they’re no longer part of our society and actively pray for the downfall of their Premiership Kith and Kin as well as every little lumpen Joey Barton clone in the nastiest and most humiliating fashion possible – for the sake of football and more importantly, for the soul of this once great nation.

So many of those commenting here appear to miss the point of the article, and point only to the 'Arsenal-Newcastl' angle. Yes, the article is written in response to the game, but it is more a critique of modern society. His target is well chosen, and Joey Barton is a reflection of the worthless sub-strata of society. I would have to put many who have directed their ire at the author of this piece into that category - unreflective, unthinking, reactive.

As much as i hate the barcodes and joey barton this article is taking the p***, the gooners have had some of the nasties players ever to grace the premier league. And as for the tackle by barton, yes it was a hard tackle but it wasnt 2 footed and there was no studs shown - it was a fair tackle. You really need to stop this whinging and blaming everone but your own team. some of you even think the referes fixed the game ... pathetic, you where 4-0 up and blew it. you really need to grow some cos every other team in teh country are laughing at your weekness and whinging. Good god what a bunch of wimps.

I'm loving how mouthy "hard men" from up North have come on here to spout the usual rubbish about "soft cockneys", after their macho butch player Joey Barton went down like the sad little poof he is upon being "assaulted" by Diaby. Fuck off and put a DVD out.

Joey Barton's actually a pretty nice guy, he lived down the road from me when was a student in Newcastle. He was kind enough to have a quick chat with me and sign my Newcastle shirt. Don't be so quick to judge people you've never met, I'm sure you've done things your not proud of. On the pitch Barton is an 'enforcer' with unmatched work-rate and the ability to take the game 'by the scruff of the neck'. His delivery and passing is excellent as well. As for the tackle on Diaby, it was a hard challenge but he played the ball, last time I checked that was still allowed. Ironically, Barton is the exact type of player that your Gunners desperately need if they want to be taken seriously as title contenders.

'to quote Joey himself if Arsenal players dont like being tackled why dont they play netball'. What a succint point by Mr Barton. Similar to that of his 'if they don't like it, they don't have to stay here'(paraphrased) with regards to the racial uproar he endured after his step-brother's conviction. Look out Bercow, you've got competition......

Laughing at Gman (Post No. 2395) we havent won anything in my 39 year lifetime except for promotion trophys and you cant wait for us to be relegated!? What a typical spoilt rotten 'supporter' who is spitting his dummy out because we came back to draw and you had nothing in the middle to compete with a physical challenge. Enjoy champions league footy....again, and we'll worry about staying up. Strange so bitter when watching such a talented side, I wonder how many fans would turn up at the emirates if your last major trophy was in 1969. Yes thats 1969. I'm guessing most of Arsenals 60,000 fans would be finding other things to do on a Saturday afternoon. But your bad wishes are noted diddums. As is your arrogance.

"He received his first red card in 2003 for arguing with a referee in the tunnel – not even on the field of play –" Does Cesc Fabregas not do this every game? I wont even go into his alleged spitting incident! While you seem to write like you may have a hint of intelligence this is purely just a smokescreen masking your under evolved little brain! I've been sat here for 5 minutes trying to word something that you may understand and possibly take on board, but it's quite clear you have got no desire to take on another point of view. I feel that this whole article is down to your annoyance at your result against Newcastle and the tackle on Diaby - which was a fantastic tackle and one which Wenger would have been arguing in favour of if Diaby had made it on Barton! Nobody is perfect and it seems to me that Barton is trying his best to improve as a person - I believe this is what has helped his superd form this season. Just a response to David Walker 7:06am 7th Feb 2011 "Lee Hughes went to prison for manslaughter yet is carrying on with his career without a word". Lee Hughes served time for that crime and has worked tirelessly for charity and for other causes since it happened. He has also had conversations with the victims family (he has never disclosed what was said)and tried to make ammends for what he did. From listening to him in interviews he actually sounds like a decent guy who made a massive mistake which he will have to live with for the rest of his life.

Well said Sir, I will look forward to the next time a Toon player gets hurt and will laughing when the Toon Army start crying and calling for justice. What goes around comes around and once Pardew has settled into his new post I will celebrate his achievements when he takes the team back into the Championship. I dont think it will be this season as Hughton has done too good a job, but a clown is a clown and relegation is a certainty and I will toast their failure as Toon fans always think their team is 10 times better than it actually is and watching the tears when they go down will signal a massive party at my house. Phil Dowd wont be in charge of your games every week so enjoy it while it lasts because you will be playing Mickey Mouse football soon enough and no one will enjoy that moment more than me!

Diaby was sent off for 2 pushes...one on barton one on nolan. Meaning that when Nolan got booked (which noone seems to realise he did) for pushing the keeper, the punishment was the same as Diabys. Also "disgusting" tackle?? he won the ball, if diaby (like arsenal tend to do) didnt shirk the tackle there wouldnt have been a problem. You arsenal fans need to stop blaming everyone else and realise it was the lack of bottle in your team which cost you the game

'Joey Barton's lonely braincell' you have far far far too much time on your hands. Love the sound of your own voice I can imagine - your snobbish, generalised and insulting opinion of geordies is getting extremely tiring. Your working class digs and yet you are the one repeatedly swearing? Barton has never hit a woman and I agree he has made some big mistakes in the past, as have many other footballers, Gerrard on CCTV beating some bloke repeatedly at a bar, but that's OK because he is an England golden boy and one 'legendary' eric cantona karate kicked a fan in front of children. I am not defending Joey's past but he was battling with alcoholism and has since done something about this and quit. He is channeling all his energy into his career and has had an outstanding season. (Drink driving is comparable as it can destroy lives whether it is your first or ninteenth time doing it) Despite your opinion of Barton, to suggest lke this article has that he had anything to do with Arsenals horrific collapse on Saturday is ludacris and is clearly a desperate attempt to deflect the blame off of Arsenal. "If the Arsenal players don't like being tackled, they should go and play basketball or netball." Spot on Joey

good piece, you might as well no bother though, looking at the responses, I think aw should give up and go abroad as this type of football will never be appreciated in this country, just look at some of the other comments, and the fact that so many people go and watch stoke every week! they aint watching football that for sure, so what does it say about the intellect and culture in this country, lets face it the UK is finished as a nation, I've been telling my kids to get the f out of here and if I was younger I'd be out of here too!

Get a grip! of course it is sour grapes! I'd rather have players like Barton than a bunch of pansies who dive around and abuse officials when theings don't go their way. Barton's fault you lot shamefully let such a large goal margian slide? 2 wrong decisions, the second penalty and a perfectly ONSIDE leon best goal so either way thats a comeback nothing to do with Barton. Suggest you stop embarrassing yourself with your pathetic outbursts, when we have buggered things up this season we take responsibility and more on. Too many people assosiated with Arsenal cannot handle defeat or in this case the best premiership comeback ever! Stop crying and blaming anyone other than the players who were for the second 45 minutes, spineless!

Oh forgive poor Joey, poor, poor Joey. 'Poor me, poor me, poor me another drink....what you looking at southern softy do you want some?' As pointed out in the article, how many people not in his profession get another chance at employment when they're convicted three times for violent behaviour in the last seven years, of course they're fucking not. Though we'll have a load of Geordies here defending him.

  38. Feb 07, 2011, 20:07 #2046

barton stars as newcastle play brilliantly to disappoint arsenal. two days later, article appears lambasting barton for offences that have happened years in the past. and apparently it's not bitterness or sour grapes. yawn! pull the other one. the tony adams comparison is just saying he's forgiven for his indiscresions, at least give joey a chance to prove he has got past his mistakes. i am full of respect for arsenal, but i can't understand the point of this griping. would this article be here if you had won? of course not. p.s. on the spoiler there is a poll: should joey barton get in the england squad? 75% vote yes. arsenal fans, get over it. you blew a 4 goal lead, just accept it. barton is a fantastic player, regardless of what he's done before.

  39. Joey Barton's Lonely Braincell

    Feb 07, 2011, 19:55 #2043

Also, the repeated reference to Tony Adams as if it's somewhere comparable - Adams's drink driving was an act of sheer recklessness (which actually happened up the road from me)for which he was rightly banged up. How often did he repeat his drink driving...I think you'll find it's none. Joey Barton on the other hand is a repeat violent offender - to stub a cigar out in someone's eye, batter someone to unconciousness and commit ABH on your team mate is a delberate attempt to cause injury on several counts. We also have long memories down here - his scything down of Samir Nasri and the evil little smirk 2 years ago. And with all this Barton had the nerve to state that Arsenal lacked discipline in his pre-match interview. Well like many of you have said here, if you live in a glass house don't throw stones. If you don't like people dregging up your past antics don't appoint yourself an adequate judge of what passes for discipline Joey.

very disappointed in the gunners who are so bitter at drawing a game away from home just because we came back from 0-4 down!! show a little respect as we do towards your team who play football the way we all love it played (keegans entertainers and sir bobbys wonderful attacking football). bartons tackle was never a so called leg breaker and never a yellow card offence never mind red. Also to the fans saying nolan should have been red carded well he did put Szczesny into a headlock but was yellow carded for it and unlike Diaby only did one offence while Diaby did two and the ref pointed this out as seem on MotD sourgrapes from the gunners...

I love it how the word middle class has got bandied about by the NUFC fans. Reminds me of that episode of Auf Weidersehen Pet back in the 80s where there's two coppers sitting in a panda car. One says 'do you consider yourself working class?', the other goes into details about work working class he is in a Monty Python sketch fashion. The first copper comes back and says 'once you've been to Newcastle you'll suddenly be aware of just how middle class you really are'. They say social mobility no longer exists in Britain today, bullshit! Just move to Newcastle and use a few words with more than one syllable, you'll be middle class in no time!

Arsenal play some of the best football ever but they are massively let down by the attitude of the players, manager and a large majority of their supporters. Can not accept that newcastle pulled off the greatest ever PL comeback, can't accept everton leading at goodison the ref must have been bribed. Disgusting. Look at the way Fabregas has been diving and rolling around this season? hypocrisy. "People might view this piece as sour grapes because Barton ultimately stopped my side taking three points after we were cruising four nil at half time." The ONLY piece of this crap in which you talked sense

Article rather embarrassing.Let's face it,we all knew Newcastle would come out with more aggression in the second half. Unfortunately,no one seemed to have told Wenger or the team, particularly Diaby. Barton was deliberately trying to wind Diaby up by an over aggressive tackle. It worked. Diaby should have got up and said "you can do that all you like, but we're still 4-nil up." Instead he got himself sent off. This then gave Newcastle some way back into the game. With the Home team showing far more character than we did, added to some dodgy refereeing decisions (one actually went our way for once) we capitulated. To lose a four goal lead is almost indefensible. Joey Barton may have his faults but if some of our players showed half the character he did we wouldn't need to be whinging about the result now.

You make a lot of comments regarding your opinion on 'the state of the UK', but to single out joey barton in your rant for englands demise as a nation as a whole as well as a footballing nation is laughable. If we take this approach, then surely the likes of Tony Adams should have thought twice before becoming intoxicated and getting behind the wheel, where far more damage could have been caused had it not been for a garden wall coming to the nations defence. Perhaps he is to blame for the UK having a terrible teenage drink problem? or for grown men beating their wives and children after a few too many? and perhaps Graham Rix should be accountable for the state of pheodaphilia in the UK today, what with him serving a jail sentance for having intercourse with a minor.

Yeah it is fun and entertaining but do you think it worries the Garmans, Italians and Spanish - they're too bust laughing at the Premiership.

terrible article and does not represent arsenal supporters in a good light. could not care less about joey barton, his past or how this reflects society. facts, Diaby deserved to go (Nolan should have too). poor defending for first pen, shocking decsion for second one. Even down to ten we should not be conceding 4 in 20 mins! ANOTHER FACT - WE ENDED THE WEEKEND CLOSER TO THE TOP!!!! Get behind the team and ignore moyes, barton and alike. close ranks, stick together and win the league.

The comments below exemplify why Spain won the world cup and not England. The sport has moved on and developed. Barton is out of the dark ages of football and belongs there along with gauging in rubgy, bodyline in cricket. Football players worth millions are investments and do not deserve tackles that belong to age of when footballers were part-timers and received a national wage.

I love it when an article like this gets replies of such veracity from other fans you know you have hit a nerve! Although longwinded and a little too much journalistic self indulgence for my liking, your point is bang on. its easy for NUFC fans to talk about our foreign "lightweight" boys who can take have it up em!......These are the same fans that have no problem supporting a vile little shit like Barton in their team....Although Arsenal players are no angels, we would never have the kind of scum like Barton in our shirt. It says allot about the supporters who are happy to turn a blind eye to his disgusting behavior as long as a point is earned.....typical ignorant Northern attitude. For the record I thought he challenge on Diaby was not a red card and Diaby was right to go off, that’s not what the article is saying....I imagine though many of the Newcastle readers gave up after the 1st few lines as they would have had to attempt to read words with more than 3 syllables! I was surprised you didn’t sign Diouf in the window, another player with the personality too match your club……

Excellent article. Unfortunately there are many of these Barton clones up and down the country. Seems to me that some of the posters here obviously have a liking for him and his antics both off and on the football pitch. To those who admire Mr Barton's skills I suppose this is the type of individual you would be proud of representing England internationally? Do you really think that his skills would win England the European Championships or the World Cup for that matter? You have this notion that you need to have a 'hard man' who can knock the opposition about in order to be successful in this game. Take a deep insightful look at how the other nations play and ask yourself why they seem to succeed.

Do you think your article serves a purpose? It has no relevance to the game played, why did you release it so closely after Saturdays game. Paul NUFC - ok explanation accpeted and you make a fair point. But bear in mind that we were missing our muscle/enforcer in midfield (Song) as well as the creativity of Nasri. What we had out on Saturday was very much under-strength on Saturday and when Diaby went off we had no midfield at all. We don't deny we are mentally weak and need signing - just see the other articles and the forum on here....

As a Newcastle fan - and long-time admirer of the work of Mr Wenger - I see this an a typical 'jump-on-the-bandwagon' piece. Barton HAS improved. All of these 'crimes' you point out were all committed in the past. Barton has lived almost 4 years in the NE. He has never been caught out beating a DJ up on camera. He has never fucked his teamates' wives/girlfriends. He has never murdered anyone. Yet here we are again. with this tired old drivel. I'm sorry mate, but it stinks of sour grapes.

Rob, I assume your referring to Keegan when you mentioned the Messiah. That was always something SKY pushed as opposed to Newcastle fans. regarding Viera and Barton whilst i agree Viera was a world class footballer and Barton is not i was referring to a mental strength and desire to succeed that both have, something that all your current midfield lacks. As a Newcastle season ticket holder and someone who travels to their fair share of away games I know its highly unlikely I will see champions league football anytime soon. You should be happy you get to see such good football and if you do want to win the league anytime soon, admit that Wenger needs to change the mentality of his players or buy a midfielder who isnt afraid of a tackle.

Lets have a quick glance through the Arsenal hall of Shame. these are just the ones i can come up with from memory. -Martin Keown sure showed how to act with class and decorum when RvN missed his penalty. -Paul Merson, drugs ang gambling addictions. -Tony Adams served time and had an alcohol addiciton. -Patrick Viera, right up there in the Premiership red card league. I for one would like to praise Joey Bartons' reaction to being grabbed by the throat and being thrown to the ground. he just left it alone.

Blame the ref, blame Barton, blame the rest of the world but don't blame yourself. You lost that game because you think teams should stand off and let you run rings around them. You lost that game because you showed a lack of discipline, a lack of composure and rather than tackle what was coming at you, you concentrated on whining to the ref. After reading some of the comments from Arsenal fans, this article gets even funnier and to quote Joey himself if Arsenal players dont like being tackled why dont they play netball. Wenger has created this atmosphere that their players are some how special and different from others in the premier league, guess what the sooner you realise you aren't, then you might win something. You havent replaced Viera, and maybe if you had a Barton in your midfield you might win something. Does it not tell you that all the papers and pundits have described his tackle as hard but fair. Wenger needs to shut his whingey mouth and the Arsenal fans who blindy follow his every word likes he's the messiah need to get a reality check!! moaning twats!!!

A very sad article. You have a great football team who will never fulfill their potential because their manager, and their supporters, make excuses for them whenever things go wrong. This attitude feeds through to the team, who see themselves as perpetual victims of injustice, rather than showing the sort of fighting spirit shown by NUFC in the second half.

Pure bitterness, you let a 4 goal lead slip, refusing to accept that fact and blaming it on everyone under the sun is probably expected. But to write such vindictive, hate filled properganda about the best player on the pitch (in both games against arsenal this season) is just utterly pathetic, and to bring his step brother into the matter is a disgrace. Anyone with half an ounce of sense will accept that Barton has been one of the best performers in the league this season, and for the past few years has seemed to have put his off field problems behind him. However there is still the odd idiot who refuses to aknowlege the rehabilitation Joey has shown, and his talent as a footballer, and instead choose to vent there pent uo anger towards him in an attemlt to make them feel better about themselves, and there club. Exhibit A, your long winded ill informed rant.

You have very little ground on which to base your opinion. A disgusting challenge? He went in with one leg and they were both the same distance from the ball. They call that a 50/50 and it's what makes football a good game. If you turn it round the other way, do you remember the tackle on Newcastles Ben-Arfa? That is a disgusting challenge. Please think before you write an article that humiliates you. Very bad journalism.

Pity the level of intellect displayed is not as extensive as the vocabularly used. Lumpenproletariat indeed. Yes, Nolan could easily have been dismissed and the second penalty was incorrect, but Best's perfectly valid goal (unlike van Persie's effort at the death) was also incorrectly scrubbed off. Dressing up this pompous drivel as a well-thought article is ludicrous. Threw just about everything into the mix - apart from religion - including Joey's half-brother..but forgot to mention that he appealed for him to give himself up. As for using patriotism to back this piece up - last refuge of a scoundrel I believe. The experts agree that Barton's tackle was legal. You drew a match you should have won, but also could have lost. Man up and get over it. Arsenal have had their share of villains over the years Keown, Dixon and the repeatedly incarcerated Storey. Hypocrite.

ha ha with a player like joey Barton playing for Arsenal maybe they would be able to handle it when other teams get a bit physical with them. At half time i was ashamed to be a newcastle supporter but after full time that shame paled in comparison to the pride I felt to be a supporter of a team with enough character to come back from 4-0 down lead by Joey Barton, by the end of the game anyone that was connected to arsenal in any way should have felt shame beyond belief, i mean seriously, how can a team wanting to win the title fail to maintain a 4 goal lead agaist a team that has just lost their top goal scorer and their second choice as well. furthermore If anyones reaction to the incident was "thuggish" it would have to be diaby's. 1 hard challenge that was in fact perfectly legitimate one and he blows his top if i remember back to newcastle wolves the "notorious" barton sustained 5 or 6 challenges that were far heavier than that and he was able to keep himself composed as he was when diaby grabbed his neck and threw him to the ground. you are just an arsenal supporter realising his team never really were in the running for the title and you want to blame Joey Barton.

  88. Barry LFC

Coming from an Arsenal fan this is very rich. I've never seen a team like them - they dive, feign injury, roll around like they've been shot when they get a tap, yet also put in some ridiculous tackles (just look at the players like Vieira, Diaby, Keown - the latter of those three hounded van nistelrooy a few years ago in a bizzare piece of gamesmanship and wenger DEFENDED him. WTF? I suggest this writer looks closer to home at Arsene Wenger, the only manager in the history of English football to field a team without British players, over his cheating tactics before pointing the finger at a player who is trying to turn his career and life around and making a good job of it. What a sad pathetic person you clearly are , Joey Barton is obviously (to anyone but yourself) trying to improve his behaviour both on and off the pitch , he is not an angel whereas you are a bigotted, arrogant , narrow minded, self opinionated moron.Regarding the tackle in question it appeared to have no malicious intent although could on another day have caused injury but as has been said previously football is a contact sport.

  90. Ian W

    Feb 07, 2011, 12:06 #1963

Strange timing to post this in a season where Barton has cleaned up his act and has played extremely well. The challenge on Diaby was hard but fair, and the guy needs to man up and accept that contact is part of the game. Much like many Arsenal staff, players and fan blog writers it seems.

    Feb 07, 2011, 12:01 #1959

I take it you felt the same way about Tony Adams then? After all he was sent to prison, had alcohol problems, off the field behaviour issues, put in some shocking tackles in his time too. Are you going to write an article about what an odious man he is and how he shouldn't get media and football jobs. Maybe Barton was just looking up to the example of players like him!!! This is another great example of the excuse culture that Wenger has created at Arsenal, given that the same culture can be seen in the behaviour of Fabregas, Wilshere etc and also seems to be one of the major faults in modern society then maybe you should consider Wenger & Arsenal a "Walking Embodiment of Everything that’s wrong with Britain today"!

Diarby, incensed by the tackle was wrong to react the way he did but what is it with referees how they allow dangerous tackles to go unpunished-see bartons "tackle" on arshavin- giving licence to him to carry on dishing it out. Barton did'nt draw the game for you Dowd did. Shocking ref as most of them are. Are you geordies happy that another thug went unpunished for a disgusting assault on Ben arfa-namely De jong. Surely not. We need, like rugby and cricket, to bring in live video officials to stop all these wrong decisions. I for one, am sick of seeing games decided by poor decisions from the officials.

I have to say I'm absolutely gobsmacked at how bitter Arsenal fans are after Saturdays collapse. Such a shame that a great club like Arsenal has attracted a bunch of moaning, disillusioned "fans" like some on here. Still with a manager like Wenger, perhaps I shouldn't be so surprised... I'd like to ask any of you Arsenal fans a question - how do you think Fabregas or Diaby would have reacted, if they had been grabbed by the neck and thrown to the floor? Would they stay completely calm, and hardly react at all? Because thats what Joey Barton did on Saturday. I think deep down you all know that if that happened to an Arsenal player, it would be followed by 5 minutes of rolling around on the floor, with the rest of the team discussing (intimidating) the issue with the ref.

Arsenal must stop blaming others for capitulating and Diaby needs more self-discipline - Joey however can deal with his problems by getting drunk, assaulting a 15 year old, exposing his backside, stubbing his cigar out on a team mate's face, committing ABH, etc. Dear me, if I was stuck in a city full of such twats I'd fuck off and leave to work on a German building site too. Bartons changed his career round and now he's influencing games, just a bit bitter because he ran both games and has 2 goals and an assist against you this season?

Absolutely no relevance to your teams capitulation on Saturday though, the answer to that is much closer to home and thats where you should be looking if you must blame someone for it, or just man up and accept the game for what it was, 2 teams playing great football, one team in either half. Excitement, drama, controversy and both sets of fans being put through the mill. Treasure the memory of the fantastic match it was and move on. Before 3pm Saturday you would have settled for Man Utd and Chelsea losing and Arsenal picking up a point at SJP, be happy and enjoy it.

Dear oh dear. I am sure there are many, many Arsenal fans out there who will be cringeing at the pathetic self serving drivel you have written regarding Joey Barton who according to you is responsible for all the wrongs in the world. Joey has no doubt had a past that he is ashamed of, blighted by alcoholism and anger management issues, quite a lethal combination. However the current tee total Joey Barton has made great strides to put his life back on track by buckling down, concentrating on his football, trying not to react despite immense provocation virtually every time he steps out on a pitch, and carries out a great deal of charity work outside the public eye. In my opinion he a man getting his life back on track and he should be applauded for it, not denigraded by the likes of you. As you are writing this as an Arsenal fan can you not see some of the sheer hypocrisy in the article, ignoring the very robust challenges made and the dodgey life styles led by many past and present Gunners players. Barton has been a great leader and team player for us, and is willing to take a pay cut to pay back the loyalty shown by the club and it's fans during some of his most difficult days. Can you say hand on heart that any of your foreign legion would be willing to do the same. No-one condones what Joey Barton was like in the past but to me everyone deserves a chance to turn their life around and for people not to harp on about past failings. As Joey has been helped a lot by Tony Adams I'm sure he would not be too pleased to read such vindictive nonsense from a Gunners fan. Clearly you and all your extended family have led lives as pillars of the community, but even so you have no right to make such an attack on Joey Barton or anyone else. I like watching the Gunners play and have marvelled at some of the very skilful players you have had. What is becoming increasingly repugnant is the nasty, moaning, whingeing attitude that some fans such as yourself display when things don't go Arsenal's way. Whingeing Wenger always blames everyone/everything else but his team and that self serving attitude is making the players and some of your fans believe that it is everyone's fault but your own when things don't go right. Reading some of the Arsenal's boards yesterday it was toe curlingly embarrasing seeing the level of delusion and paranoia of some of your fan base ie the match was fixed, the refs taken a back hander, it was the refs fault, Joey Bartons, hot dog seller etc etc. Why don't you just man up and accept when these things happen. Your players folded like a pack of cards and until they develop the mental resilience to fight when the chips are down and someone out there shows some leadership instead of blaming everyone else for the predicament you will never become champions. Hopefully when you have had a chance to calm down you will be embarrased to re read your article, if you aren't embarrased then I'm embarrased for you.

  109. Dear Daily Mail...

    Feb 07, 2011, 11:01 #1938

Wow. What are you like when you lose? Barton has an apalling history, but (1 on-pitch misdeameanor aside, for which he was rightly banned when TV caught it) he's been a different man for the last year and a half since he stopped drinking. The tackle on Diaby was fair. Diaby's response was not.

What a load of absolute drivel. The degree of bitterness you show over a football match which your side simply didn't deserve to win in the first place is incredible. Rather than being honest, holding up your hand and recognising the floors in your team of football wizards you feel the need to somehow blame the wrongs of society on Joey Barton? Including some completely unrelated bullsh1t about his brother. You should start writing for the Daily Mail mate, if you haven't already. If you'd like to complain about dirty teams then I'd point to the fair play league table-Arsenal's 6 red cards to Newcastles 1 red, which wasn't even from Joey Barton by the way. There was nowt wrong with the tackle, yet Diaby's reaction is parralleled by your own reaction to your teams failings-childish, bitter and petty.

He will always have a bad boy tag stitched onto him and will remain a target for players, ref and one sided media hacks. Joey is the toons best player this season imo and should be in line for england but luckily for us he isnt. by the way i thought it was terrible the way barton forced is neck into diabys hand, totally unccalled for and should be banned for life

Robert Exley you should hang your head in shame for this piece of inept 'journalism'. As always with THE Arsenal, the finger is pointed in the opposite direction. Just like daddy Wenger the aim is to deflect attention because Arsenal can do no wrong. People forget Diaby's 'challenge' ON Barton in the first half. Wreckless but Joey was man enough to quickly shake Diaby's hand, its a pity Abou couldnt have shown the same level of maturity. It seems that you, Robert Exley, have also been blessed with the same level of maturity as your French counterpart. A poison pen a keyboard warrior. "Wisdom is learning what to overlook."HWTL!

ha-ha I thought I was reading the daily mail for a few minutes. This article is a classic case of referring back to past times as if they were some golden age which incidentally never existed. Barton is a scumbag yes but in no way does he represent an entire class lumpun or otherwise such sweeping generalisations belong on the pages of the Daily Mail as you said and not in a commentary on what turned out to be a shambles of an affair for our Gooners. Why don’t you focus on the football instead?

WOW reading this article and the language used leads the reader to believe that the writer is of high intellect. How wrong you can be. This article is distasteful and bitter. Whilst Joey Barton is hardly a modern citizen, he is trying to change and credit should be given for that. To bring up a family member's wrong doing is very low, has no one in your own family ever did anything wrong, if so maybe you should be held accountable for it. In conclusion this article is pure garbage written by a total moron.

What a load of shite. It's all Joey Bartons fault. Get over it will you. Bitter Arse fans as per usual. Fickle fans looking for any excuse for their demise. I agree Joey has been a complete tool in the past (to say the least) but have to admit he has shown signs he is growing up. He's been immense and a great all round footballer this year. Not reacting to tackles or intimidation. If only your players could do this when things aren't going your way (which is quite often for our players). Grow up man, take it on the chin and stop looking for people to blame. PS Did you know climate change and the state of the economy is Joeys fault too. He should be hung.

This is the biggest load of bollocks I've ever read, and my god do you like to ramble on and on and on and on....Zzzzzzzzzzzzz. I should have just closed the window after reading the 1st bit: "Newcastle midfielder’s ‘challenge’ on Diaby was nothing compared to some of his assaults" because that in itself is an absolute blinkered joke. The ball was there to be won. A 50-50 ball which both players went in for. Barton went through and won the ball with 1 foot fairly. Diaby's reaction was nothing short of pathetic. At 4-0 up all he had to have done was to have taunted Barton with the scoreline, but instead he lost his marbles! Pure stupidity. The rest of your article is pure bull as well. Have you actually re-read what you wrote and realised just how much of a twat you look? Barton has been highly professional this season and if you give him a chance and actually listen to him, he does have a humble side. But nop, you just harp on about his off the field previous issues because it makes you feel better, and enables you to deflect away from the fact that your team imploded and threw away a 4 goal lead. Bitter and always moaning. I love watching Arsenal play, but your fans are such whiners. Show some respect for a change. We got the same at the Emirates. You couldn't hack the fact that you lost. We lose games and take it on the chin, why can't Arsenal fans just SOMETIMES just accept things a bit more gracefully?

    Feb 07, 2011, 9:27 #1890

An article which prompts respondents to say stuff like "I don't condone murder, but...." must be seriously bizarre. And it is. Your players couldn't take responsibility for their predicament and your manager never can. This lack of character and leadership is what's blighting Arsenal. It's as though they have an entitlement mentality - "We play the best football so we should be allowed to win everything". And it infects the fans too - they went AWOL as soon as the fightback began and just didn't try to rally their team - in stark contrast to the Toon's incredible support. I suppose that's the difference between the stotty cake crew and Arsenal's prawn sandwich set.

  147. shameonyou

    Feb 07, 2011, 9:27 #1889

What utter bullshit! Barton's challenge (no inverted commas) was fantastic. He won the ball fairly and I can't believe the reaction of Diaby - like a child! A man should be judged on how he reacts to things and, quite frankly, Barton has been hounded all season and has reacted, for the most part, brilliantly on and off the pitch. If Diaby was half the player Barton or Tiote are he would have got up and carried on like a man! I think you need to take a journalism course pal.

Disgraceful and hypocritical article. You should be ashamed of yourself, and you are a disgrace to your club and nation withthis sort of tripe. Joey Barton is a reformed character, who has admitted his wrongs, and works on a daily basis to correct them. This garbage coming form an Arsenal fan, a team which spawned such 'fair play' and moral guardians as Patrick Vieira, Tony Adams and Paul Merson? Shut you r stupid hole and grow a pair, you dropped the ball after thinking you had strolled the match. Huge mistake. Title chasers, not a chance. decent supporters, now way.. Whinrs? Certainly. Not even a foul? You people are blind. Why wasn't Nolan booked for his assault on Szczesny? You need to take off your rose tinted specs as much as we do. It's all too easy to cover up the facts with 'whinging Arsenal, whinge whinge whinge' and point the finger back. Look at the match again, ****ively, and you'll see that the refs performance was shocking, the second half in particular was so bad that it caused some commentators to laugh and others to make accusations of corruption. Diaby's benahviour was much worse than any other player on the pitch, yet it's understandable? Reacting like that when you are 4-0 up is NOT understandable. Horrible article once again attacking the easy target that is Joey Barton. Been clean for a good 2 years now and trying to change his ways and it kills people like the muppet who wrote this article, pulling incidents from his past to have a go at him. Sure his past ain't pretty, but his present is brilliant. He didn't react to Diabys aweful attack, something that he would of done 2-3 years ago. He is one of the best English midfielders out there at the minute and twats like you need to accept that sooner or later.

It is a very nasty article from a very petty little man and is def ‘sour grapes’ with a vindictive attack on Barton and Pardew. As for Barton, my view is that the lad really is trying his best. He has had a lot to overcome from his upbringing and I believe he has stopped drinking and taken anger management. I do believe in ‘redemption’ and indeed Joey is trying very hard to redeem himself. For his sake I’d love to see him picked for England as he deserves a place. I wish the ‘Barton’ haters would give him a chance. The gooner who wrote the article though just hates him because he is looking for a scapegoat for their embarrassing draw after being 4-0 up. Silly little man.

Well done. The only drawback is that your comments may have run a bit long. Given the apparent attention span of most people these days, it's doubtful whether many made it to the end.... Their loss. I watched the Super Bowl yesterday, and as a plus-20-year expat from Amerika whose had occasion to view things across the pond from outside the fishbowl, it's both interesting and sad to note how many of your points are spot on with respect to many of your colonial cousins. Change the names and a few of the details, and the same could be written about Amerika's heroes. It doesn't matter what sort of character someone has (and demonstrates through their actions), ... score a few goals, throw a couple of TD passes, and all is forgiven. Although not mentioned in your remarks, Andrey Arshavin deserves some comment. He'd been out of form for a long stretch, and admittedly has never cut the best figure in terms of creating an impression of working hard. But in fairness, his contributions have not been insignificant even while not scoring as many goal as expected. His assist rate speaks for itself. But what for me is even more impressive is how he never pissed and moaned about getting "demoted" from the first-choice team. Indeed, he admitted that he wasn't playing as well as he would like, that it bothered him a lot, and that he was dong the best he could to regain his form. In a time when one of the prerequisites for stardom is the ability to shout loud and long, "Look at me, look at me!!", and to complain to whomever will listen (and there's never a lack of those) that they're not playing enough regardless of how poor their performances have been, Arshavin has been a (very) welcome breath of fresh air. With all the talk about a lack of leadership in the Arsenal squad, Arshavin's example is more than commendable.

I can hardly believe what I have just read, before you start blaming Joey Barton for the state of this country maybe you should have a long hard look in the mirror. I absoloutly can't stand racism and obviously murder but that has nothing at all to do with Joey Barton, I think you are clutching at straws there pal, I get that your bitter and want him locked up so he can't score or create any more goals against your beloved arsenal but come on, it's like me suggesting that the reason that Tony Adams beat up women is because you support arsenal! On that note, why are Adams and Merson and all the wronguns that have played at arsenal not responsible for the downfall of Britain? Is it because they played for arsenal so they are just lovable rougues? I completely agree that in the past Joey has done some terrible things but he is trying to better himself (ask lord Tony Adams who took him in at his clinic for sporting bad lads). The fact is that Barton has been kicked around all season and for the most part has not reacted. On the flip side, Diaby was on the recieving end of a firm but perfectly fair and legal tackle and reacted by grabbing Barton by the neck and throwing him to the ground, seems to me like Diaby is the thug, maybe he was responsible for all the murders in the world?? I do not like to see players get injured but just because he has been injured in the past does that mean no-one can tackle him?? Does that excuse his violent response to a strong but fair challenge, of course not, JB is right, if he doesn't like it, he should try taking up syncronished swimming or ball room dancing! It is very clear that your incapable of giving people the chance to make up for previous errors and you would rather keep knocking them for past errors and things they are not even responsible for so can I expect you to write an article soon about how Adams' drinking and wife beating is responsible for 'broken britain' or Arsene Wenger's infedelities perhaps? Of course not because you are so narrow minded and bitter. Why not write about something constructive instead of trying to besmirch a player because your upset that your team cant hold on to a 4 goal lead.

Everyone's keen to assume that we're talking about Barton's challenge as in the one leading to the red card. No we're, mostly, not. It's one conveniently left out of match of the day as well as his brutal attack on Arshavin. Bad article but Barton is a dick and represents everything wrong with the English game along with Terry, Gerrard and Rooney. Oh and how many times has Wilshere actually been convicted of committing an offence? His most famous "arrest" was actually his voluntary attendance as a witness.

He tore you a new one on Saturday. Make no mistake he did actually take you to the cleaners. An article like that is the biggest backhanded compliment he could ever be paid. Arsenals soft underbelly was exposed again - all the pretty pretty footballers who can pass the opposition to death just couldn't handle a Barton led NUFC's fightback. Move on cockerneys.

Couldn't be bothered to read it. You should be venting your anger at your heartless players and whinging manager not Joey Barton. Pathetic bunch of whinging fans, i did not see the incident but Barton should have been sent off. How does that work you fool Wenger............. Barton had a great game, your team folded like a pack of cards but you can never accept any blame.... Spoilt children.... Hopefully there will not be double standards from the FA and Wiltshire will be dealt with for his comments about the ref. Thanks for the 4 points this season.

I got increasingly bored of your rant after the first couple of paragraphs as it is very narrow minded and sensationally unresearched bringing up a mans past to justify the failing of a team that collapsed under pressure from a team with a bond and a common goal. If you knew anything about Joey Barton these days is thy he is a drasically changed character, the man is teetotal, does slot of charity work and genuinely knows that his past is working against him so he has worked hard to change. We can all see that there are still some aspects of the old Barton in there but to call him every thing that's wrong with football shows how little you know about the sport, current England internationals have far worse tap sheets then Barton but get away with because they are media darlings and are the said players in as good as form as Joey? Well the answer is no! Bartons form this season makes him an asset to Newcastle and if England want to over lock him then it's their loss, and if you want to blame him for Arsenals second half collapse then that's up to you, but don't be mistaken Joey Barton is one he'll of a footballer!

My, my. Some big words there. You've obviously got a serious inferiority complex, trying to impress with your (self-perceived) knowledge of the English language. I hope you similarly waxed lyrical about the loutish behaviour of a certain Tony Adams when he used to regularly beat up his wife of the time when returning home from drunken nights out with the "Romford Pele", and risk killing innocent bystanders with his drunken driving (his own words, not mine - read his book "Addicted", if you haven't already). I've nothing but admiration for Tony Adams for the way he's turned his life around, but then I'm a bigger man than you, and am willing to accept people can work at improving their lives, as Joey Barton has. Do you know anything at all about football? I suspect not. The art of tackling is equally as important as the silky skills side of the game. You talk about Charlton and Moore, but the team that won the World Cup with them in 1966 also needed the tigerish tackling of Nobby Styles. The Barton tackle on Diaby was hard but fair. Ask Patrick Vieira what his honest opinion of it is. Arsenal play the best football of any side in the Premier League, but that doesn't mean that other teams should just stand and admire their passing game. Football is a man's game. Get over it. Try giving a bit of praise to the opposition now and again. Or, alternatively, take the Arsene approach, and deny Arsenal ever adopt anything similar - I never saw it!

Wow! Feel better for getting that off your chest? Certainly does seem a little petty and vindictive. To preface... I do not condone the past behavior of Joey Barton, or murder, or anything in between for that matter. That said he did do his time for his crimes and I'm under the impression that you are entitled to another chance, and that you are not guilty for another's crimes - even when the perpetrator is related. Regarding Barton as a person... He was and is an alcoholic (currently recovering, but never recovered). By his own admission he did some terrible things in his younger days particularly while under the influence of alcohol and he was punished. It would appear that he also had some significant anger management problems which were not a good combination as everyone knows. To his credit, he does appear to have got his life in order. That does not excuse his behavior in any way shape or form, however alcoholism is a disease and an addition that affects many and has many serious consequences, to overlook it as a factor is naive at best. I happen to agree that this along with many other things is a big problem in our society, but that is another conversation entirely. One could make the case that the rehabilitated (i.e. sober) Joey Barton is actually a positive influence and role model today for so many who are also struggling because he is a very public figure who has proven (at least in recent years) that you can come back from the brink. It is also my understanding that Joey Barton the player owes Newcastle for standing by him through off-field trouble and injury. I for one who am used to professional sports people being handed silly money and an early age, am actually refreshed to see a sportsmen be willing to show some loyalty, and apparently even be willing to take a pay cut (shock and horror!). Having spoken with some friends of mine who are Newcastle supporters, it would appear that he has been one of the best players in their team, and although I have no independent verification, one of the best English midfield players of the season. I have also seen a number of interviews with Barton which show a very reflective individual in my opinion, one who is far from empty headed and without a moral compass. He also seems to be honest and upfront about his feelings and beliefs - this has never been in doubt, and in fact has voiced feelings shared by many the ordinary man - you yourself refer to one such incident following the 2006 world cup. Regarding the match, which I was able to enjoy as a neutral fan watching a world-televised game from one of the greatest, if not the greatest soccer league on the planet... The game was a great advert for all that is right in the Premier League. It had everything and I personally believe it will be looked back on as one of the best games for many a year to come. Goals, red cards, two halves of admittedly one way free-flowing soccer at it's best. As a neutral, it is also enjoyable to see the underdog triumph. Just as seeing Stevenage win in the FA Cup against Newcastle, and Wolverhampton beating Manchester Utd. While Barton is certainly no saint, far from it in fact, it is people like you, writing vitriole like this that give the English fan and country as a whole a bad name. As for my personal interpretation of the game's key incidents as a trained referee (seemingly also the consensus in most blogs and articles I have seen). 1st half = Arsenal at their best, direct to goal, great movement off the ball with moments off pure class. Newcastle not really at the races. 2nd half = Arsenal at close to their worst. Headless chickens would be a good description. No tactics, no answers and some plain stupidity by Diaby started the problems. Barton's tackle was fair under all interpretations of FIFA's rules. He one the ball cleanly, sliding with only one foot and without any studs showing, with a minor collision with the player after the ball had been won. Certainly a hard tackle, but fair. There was no apparent intent to harm nor was the tackle dangerous. The referee called this correctly. Not a red, not a yellow and not even a free kick. Diaby on the other hand reacted (twice in fact) and gave the referee no option but to send him off with a straight red card. As a fan, an idiotic choice and entirely unnecessary. The first penalty was also fair. The defender came through the striker and did not make contact with the ball. The goalkeeper was time-wasting and got a fair yellow card. I may be mistaken but I believe the Newcastle player Nolan was also carded. The referee was well placed to see what happened, and if that was the case it was also fair - despite having the right to collect the ball, Nolan reacted with an unnecessary shove, not a punch and not to the head and therefore not a red card. The second penalty was the softest decision given, however at worst was a 50:50 call. Both players appeared to be playing each other more than the ball, but the defending team in their own area always has the greater risk. Personally I am in favor of cracking down on such fouls as I believe there are too many of them in the game today. All of the offside decisions were called correctly with the exception of a Newcastle goal that was wrongly disallowed, so theoretically it could have been worse for Arsenal. It was also noticable that the Arsenal players were significantly less sportsmanlike - asking for players to be booked, diving, swearing, making gestures, etc. All unnecessary and a detraction from the game in general. So yes, Arsenal lost a 4-0 lead for the first time ever and I'm sure it leaves a sour taste in the mouth for all Arsenal fans, but grow up and get off your high horse. It was a thoroughly entertaining game and to blame everyone but yourself (as the Arsenal manager seemed to do - it was their player, it was the referee, etc, etc) smacks of poor judgement and/or sour grapes. Finally to wish ill on someone else is at best in poor taste, and isn't life too short?

I can only say you must not have played football before? Also it must be said, Barton must have some intelligence as he is now tee-total and is trying to improve himself. I used to have alot of time for Arsenal, they play football the way it should be played.....for the most part, but they dive, cheat and moan non stop during and now it seems your fans are doing the same. If you don't win it's everybody's fault except your teams. 1) Joey's tackle was hard but fair.2)The sending off was a correct decision but he was sent off for the 2 pushes which is the reason why Nolan "got away" with his one push. 3)Best had a perfectly good goal disallowed by the same linesman who gave the second(iffy) penalty, so no conspiracy or "fixing" there as both teams benefitted from his ineptitude. 4)RVP's late goal was offside, all 3 points are not opinions they are fact and everyone bar whingeing, moaning Gooner fans accept this. Arsenal were great in the 1st half but were equally as bad in the second, your teams heads visibly dropped after we scored the first and that is what you should be more concerned with, your teams like of fight and character because that's what is going to leave you with zero trophies again. Yes JB has been an arse in the past, which he has been punished for, Tony Adams could quite easily have killed someone whilst driving drunk, still a hero at Arsenal is he? Man up and accept the game for what it was, one of the best games you'll ever see and had the full range of emotions for both sets of fans. Accept it move on and stop heading towards becoming a laughing stock.

There was nothing wrong with the challenge by Barton. He won the ball cleanly and Diaby wasn't even hurt. Big girls blouse. How very sad. Seems like the game really got to you as you manage to throw Pardew into the mix as well. Very surprised you didn't find something "scummy" about the ground staff at St. James, or possibly the fans as well. Barton has history, the majority of it extremely unpleasant and believe me, I was one of those Newcastle fans who would have been only too glad to see the back of him. However, he has served his time for his vicious assault, and can do nothing about his past, only about his future. And there is absolutely nothing he can do about his relatives. I would love to say that footballers should be role models, but the fact of the matter is that, in the main, they are a bunch of spoilt, arrogant children who are paid an obscene amount of money and are raised on a pedastel of fame and treated like demi-gods. This, however, is not their fault, simply a manifestation of today's society - when you are treated like a demi-god, you start to think you are one. There are rare exceptions to the rule, but such is life. But for you to use an abysmally poor second half performance by Arsenal to launch into such a bizarre attack on Barton (and Pardew) is simply pathetic. Barton's tackle was hard but legal - and yes, Diaby has a bad leg break which I am sure plays on his mind, but then we had De Jong break Ben Arfa's leg, with a much, much worse tacke (his intent was plain to see - he wasn't just tackling, he was making a statement of intent and broke Hatem's leg in 2 places). Yes, I am a Newcastle supporter of over 35 years, with a youngest son who idolises Arsenal, so I am not looking at this with blinkers on. I actually admire the intent behind Arsenal's play, but the sooner your team, your manager and your fans realise that with no spine, with no guts, with no heart, you will NEVER realise the potential you have in those players. The sooner Mr. Wenger realises that protecting his charges to such a large degree is not helping their professional growth at all, the more chance you will have of winning something. And on another note, my son (the Arsenal fan) and myself were at the game and even when you were 4-0 up, no-one screamed or swore at him, despite his unbounded enthusiasm - unlike our visit to the Emirates which was a much less enjoyable experience. Hope Mr. Wenger sorts out his attitude and his team, because I would love to see a "football" team win things, but you seriously need to calm down and understand that no amount of ranting is going to change a thing.

Did you know that Barton has taken a pay cut in his new contract to stay with the club? Surely that shows more character than many of the over payed european players that flood the premiership looking for that next big money deal come transfer time. Plus it was not Barton that stopped your team getting the result. It was the reaction of Diarby and Arsenals immaturity as team that lost them the match. Tackles like Bartons happen all the time in premier league. Week in, week out. I am guessing if Wiltshire had made the same kind of tackle then your essay would not have made it onto here.

Apart from his bust up with Pederson and lets be honest. No one likes the guy. He has done very well to rekindle his form and to keep his head down. It was a FAIR tackle. Albeit a hard tackle. But he won the ball, and unfortunetly caught Diaby in the aftermath. He had to go for the ball and he did. Now like i said. Grow up. Get a pair, and worry about your own team.

I agree society needs a shake but to single out Barton is harsh. the tackle on Diarby was strong and fair, in fact I caan think of Lee Dixon and Viera putting similiar in there time. I ask you a question when they did, di you chear?????

Shut up you sad man, I think its jealousy coming out from all you twats when the boy Barton does good, we have all got pasts some more than others and got into trouble now and again but you lot just wont give this guy a break. He has been the best midfielder in England this season and never put a foot wrong well mabye the Pederson incident but look at the way the fanny reacted if someone tapped you in the stomach in the street you wouldnt be rolling around on the floor although you soft southern cockneys probably would. Get a life and get over it. The tackle on your man was a fair but tough takle. I didnt see you complaing when veira or keown or adams where putting in the same sort of takles every week. Im sure if he was in your team you would not be talking all this shite. I think you lot have been listening to the twisty face wenger too long all he does is complain never graceful in defeat. why cant you just give credit where due about the toon you should of lost the game as you were shite in the second half even worse than us in the first.

Apologies, I couldn't read this whole article as I was bored to tears. I do think its hilarious that you are so childishly bitter. Joey Barton exposed your midfield as the lightweights that they are and Newcastle United showed the world why you will never win the league with the type of team you keep putting out. Your fancy foreign lightweights just can't hack it when facing proper battling English sides, which leads to your manager, players and fans crying repeatedly about how nasty people always hurt you. I loved that comeback from 4-0 down, especially against you and that moaning Frenchman - get it up you!

What a load of bollocks! Is third world hunger Barton's fault as well? I suggest you all man up, swallow that bitter pill and move on. Your team play some fantastic stuff, but Jesus H Christ you don't half moan. Cheers for the four points! HWTL.

Yet another hack jumping on the ever present wagon.Far be from me to describe Barton as an angel, but it is a case of the press choosing who to pick on.Cantona had a far worse record for onfield violence than Barton but is lionised.Lee Hughes went to prison for manslaughter yet is carrying on with his career without a word.Criticism is only ok if applied evenly which people like you seem unable to do.
