Dowd: Card happy when it came to away team

Like every Arsenal supporter I settled down to watch the second half feeling that we could improve our goal difference yet further. To be honest I genuinely would have taken a dour second half as the points were in the bag. Newcastle came out to rough us up and Diaby fell for it. To be fair he has had plenty of injuries. In fact on his last comeback he took a heavy challenge which put him on the sidelines again. It is at times like this when fate conspires against you because I do not think any other player would have reacted that way. There would have been anger and some jostling but not the reaction that saw Diaby sent off. Phil Dowd could not wait to get the red card out and our worst nightmare unfolded before our eyes. Nolan put his hands on Diaby which should have been at least a yellow card. Dowd proceeded to give Newcastle every 50-50 decision but was certainly helped by our total capitulation. It was just wave after wave of black and white.

The first penalty, Koscielny got the ball through the legs of the attacker and he went down. Not a stonewall one but the ref can get away with giving that one. Nolan then grabs Szczesny around the neck and inconsistent refereeing sees him stay on the field. I totally agree with our editor that we should not have reached the point that allowed the ref to influence matters. Going down to ten men should not have seen us fall to pieces. It is difficult to criticize any individual as the whole team collapsed. Wilshere and Sagna worked hard to stem the flow but to be fair Newcastle could have scored a few more if Szczesny had not pulled off several saves. They even scored a good goal but luckily the assistant referee flagged taking the decision out of Dowd’s hands.

The second penalty was a joke. I cannot see any foul from Rosicky. Dowd must have been in a difficult position to see as surely his view was blocked by Koscielny and the Newcastle man. There is no way he could be sure, but no illegal contact was made anyway. I presume it could only have been given for a push, one that did not exist. We could have hung on at 4-2 but you knew if a third goal was scored we would not survive. I thought we might get a few chances on the break but we were totally overrun. Van Persie managed to find the net but a marginal offside decision chalked off a strike which on another day would have counted. My view was he was level with the last man.

Can the players recover from this? It felt like a 3-0 defeat and other teams will try and exploit our weakness. Perhaps we should have put everyone behind the ball when down to ten men? Not for the first time in recent years we have gone from world beaters to an absolute shambles in the same game.

I have to agree with Justanothermag....we DID lack a character in the thick of it with, as he described, the "bottle" to rally the team and see the second half through. I'm sure we can all recount previous matches starting, say 05/06 and working backwards over two decades where a 10 man Arsenal side have ground out a result. Those matches were character defining and the second half at St. James' Park, if managed properly, would have added to that list ( not to mention 2 extra points). In Australia we're lucky enough to have a free to air sports channel that shows a full replay of the previous weekend's Arsenal match ( Liverpool as well...but no Man U or Chelsea...I guess they asked for too much $ during negotiations ), and having watched the Newcastle match again, it seems our defensive solidity went with Djorou, which is a worry. The Greek Island has developed well alongside JD in the last few weeks...now he's be back to learning on the job while trying to lasso Mr. Squigglacci into something resembling a defensive position... ...at which point I'd like to raise the name of Jan Vertonghen and leave it at that for those of you in the know about this kid to debate...

There is no need to over analyze on what Newcastle players have done. Its not their fault. It could have been any other team. There's basically a perfectly rational explanation. 3 simple things caused this shambles. 1. Diaby as the open flame. 2. Squilaci as the oxygen. 3. Dowd as the fuel. The combination proved fatal. End of.

I can understand you not wanting to re-watch the highlights too much, but; -Koscielny doesnt get a touch on the ball for the 1st pen. -If you watch the ref after Diaby is sent off, he holds up his fingers indicating 'one-two'; as in the shove on Barton would have been a yellow, and the shove on Nolan was a second yellow adding up to a red. Nolan only grabbed your keeper the once which warranted a yellow (which he got), pretty consistent in my books. -2nd pen, well if that was a pen, expect every corner/freekick from now on to result in one. It was just players challenging for the ball from a setpiece situation.

A Magpie in peace! Peter, a very fair early summary but it became more partial as it went on. Perhaps if you didn't support a team as good as Aresenal, you would know that feeling of 'every decision going against you' more often. Specifically on some of your later comments: 1. Nolan's 'hands on'Diaby was to push a very angry Diaby away and, to be honest, I would always expect the captain of my team to do that when necessary. 2. For the first penalty, yes, Koscielny got some of the ball but he also got a good part of Best too. So, in this day and age, what was Best supposed to do -turn round and shake Koscielny's hand - or go to ground? A penalty was the right decision. 3. Yes, after the first penalty, both Joey Baton and Nolan tried to get the ball back from Szczesny- and for obvious reason - to try to get on with the game and make up a 3 goal deficit. And, of course, as you say, Nolan did put his arms round Szczesny's neck and push him to the ground. But the intent and effect were completely different to Diaby's earlier reaction. Nolan was booked and, in my opinion, Dowd acted entirely properly. 4. In my eyes anyway, the second penalty WAS a penalty and if you didn't see Rosicky foul Williamson then I can only suggest a trip to Spec Savers! Williamson went up for a header either for goal or back across goal and was turned half way round by Rosicky's push! And the foul was flagged by the Assistant Ref who had a good view. 5. As you rightly say (and as confirmed on MOTD)Best's 'offside' goal was in fact onside (because of Rosicky again) but unlike your comment, Van Persie was (just) offside for his late strike. But FINALLY, oh dear, what a lot of whingers you seem to have as Gooner fans. Try supporting a team who last won the old First Division Championship in 1927 and who haven't won anything since the Fairs Cup in 1969! Arsenal are a great club and have a great Manager and a great team. Yes Monsieur Wenger seems somewhat unbending and 'pig-headed' sometimes but Arsenal are a model for almost every other club in developing talent building wisely from a firm and financially viable base. I look forward to the day when Newcastle can play like 'the Arse' did in that first 45 minutes on Saturday. So-cheer up and good luck for the rest of the season.

Arsenal's reaction to this defeat tells you everything you need to know about the problems you have. You say that there are no excuses for Arsenal's collapse and then list up a load of excuses. Every time Newcastle have beaten you in recent years there has followed a rant against the officials. Maybe you are right and the entire world is against you. Alternatively you might have a bunch of prima donnas looking for excuses instead of showing a bit of character to go with their undoubted skill. Consider for yourselves why you haven't been winning trophies. As a Newcastle fan I know we don't win trophies because we haven't got the talend and sell those who do have it. With Arsenal talent isn't the issue. Character is.

Speaking as a toonie who was at the game, mostly a fair review. Just a couple of points: 1: Nolan was booked along with Szczesny for the jostling incident. 2: The linesman gave the second pen (maybe because he knew he'd got the offside wrong). Don't give Dowd all the blame for that one. Whatever the arguments about the refereeing does any Gooner imagine that an Arsenal team with an Adams or a Viera would have folded up like the current group. I love the way you play the game, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of bottle in the team.

When will the arsenal blogs stop perpetuating the we woz robbed meme and face up to their own inadequacies? Still going a week later. The rest of the world thinks you wasn't. And people think northerners where a bit chippy.

I was at the game, just enjoy it for the spectacle it was, great football, joy to despair for one set of fans and despair to joy for the other. It was a great game, but just to clear one thing up, the linesman gave the second penalty not Dowd, was he rectifying his mistake with Best's goal? possibly.Either way just enjoy the memory of it and good luck for the rest of the season.
