Reserve Team Crap, So What?

Performance at Orient was irrelevant

Reserve Team Crap, So What?

FA Cup – Arsenal’s second stringers can see off United

I can’t say I am overly surprised by the performance or the result from Sunday’s cup tie at Brisbane Road. Maybe you would expect our reserves to be able to come away from the game without the need for a replay but when you take into account the simple fact of how big a game it was for them compared to how big a game it was for us (especially after the Barcelona tie in midweek) then it really isn’t that surprising of a result.

I don’t understand how or why so many Arsenal fans get so wound up with the fact that our reserve side aren’t that good. If we go back ten years did anyone care how the reserve team got on in their respective matches? Surely the answer to this question would be a resounding no, so why is it then that when these reserve team players get the chance of a run out in a lesser game and we then realise they are not as good as the first choice lot we go mad?

I have said time and time again that no side on the planet has endless supplies of world class talent at their disposal. Barcelona are recognised as the best team on the planet right now but who replaces Messi or Villa when they come off injured? How badly were they weakened last week when Villa was replaced in the second half?

Why is it then that when we rest players as we need to do to try and fight for trophies on four fronts over the final months of the season that the fans hit the roof in anger at the manager, some even asking for the manager’s head on a silver platter every time we play a domestic cup game? I personally couldn’t give a toss that it took us two games to get past Leeds or the fact that we struggled to beat Huddersfield at home, as long as we then get our names in the hat for the next round and win the bigger games in the League and Champions League. Because then we have a fully charged battery for the games that really do count.

If we beat Orient as we will do in the replay we will have a quarter final tie to look forward to at Old Trafford. Everyone will write us off as they already have done on this very website, yet when you look at the team that started the league game at OT earlier on this season will the side that starts the possible cup tie be a weaker one? I say not. In that game we had Rosicky in the starting XI with Chamakh upfront and Arshavin out wide. Cesc was on the bench as was RVP and Theo Walcott. Sure we lost 1-0 but could have easily come away with something and the United side will not be as strong as it was that night. Fergie won’t risk his first choice XI anymore than AW does in these types of games and anyone that witnessed United struggle to get past Southampton and Crawley so far in this season’s FA Cup with a second string side in both games would be brave to predict an easy home win against us for the men from Manchester.

I predicted a possible first leg victory against the Spanish Champions last week and I also pointed to a possible stamina issue with the men from the Camp Nou. Normally they are three or four goals to the good after 30 minutes in the majority of their League games which does slightly resemble how Celtic and Rangers crush teams on a regular basis in the SPL to me. So it proved to be the case with us scoring twice in the final 15 minutes and coming on strong in general in the second half. I know Barcelona are a class outfit, they are the best team on the planet right now, but we can and will compete with them with a fully fit, fully charged first choice XI and the game last week proved that very point.

We came away with a gutsy 2-1 first leg advantage and I personally feel that we have every chance of progression in the return leg in two weeks’ time. We will be able to play our counter attacking style and the defence that Barcelona will have at their disposal without Pique is a weak one. We have gone away to places like Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford and got beat on a regular basis over the past four or five seasons, so people think that if we can’t beat them then we have no chance against the mighty Barcelona. But that for me is missing the point completely.

First of all these regular beatings that we have suffered have come with a very young side, one that has been growing up on the field in front of our very eyes and one that has been in need of maturity which comes with experiences like those very defeats. The main point for me though is that in football the number one thing that effects a team’s chances of winning is the style of play that they adopt, the tactics.

United in recent seasons have found a way that seems to have defeated us time and time again and these tactics that they and Chelsea have used with good effect over the past five seasons or so are all based around a robust solid defence and a very hard working, almost man handling, midfield. It is a complement to us that every time we play United Berbatov is not in the starting XI and a fifth midfield man, normally a hard hitting one with an engine comes in deployed by Fergie. Barcelona do not play this way and never ever will and this is the reason I feel we have every chance of progression. In my opinion we have a better chance of going through after the second leg than we would against one of the top English sides - even though if the same English sides came up against Barcelona they would almost certainly lose.

I believe we are the one English side that can beat a Barcelona team as things stand. Their defence is not tight enough to hold us for 90 minutes and their keeper manages to make our Spanish waiter look decent at times. We managed to score against them at their place last season and the team that we put out then closely resembled the one we put out against Orient on Sunday in terms of quality. We will have Sagna fit for the second leg which is a massive step up from Eboue in the first game and they will be without Pique as previously mentioned who seems to me to be their main man at the back. So bring them on.

We are better than many people currently think we are, we have matured throughout the season and every time we have disappointed we have come back strongly in the next game which in this business is all you can hope for. I mentioned this a while ago as well and this was the case recently once again as after the Newcastle collapse we bounced back with a very comfy win against Wolves and backed that up with the home win against Barcelona.

Don’t be fooled once more into thinking we are not a power to be reckoned with because our reserves failed to win away to Orient. It is the bigger picture that counts every time and looking up at that picture as things stand it is a very pretty sight indeed. Second in the league with a good looking run-in compared to our competitors, a Cup Final looming large against very beatable opponents, a second leg against the best team on the planet that we have a genuine chance of making progress against and a cup replay at home to Orient for a place in the quarters. There we can take on United, where if we did come away victorious who would we have left to beat, apart from maybe Man City?

If you are not happy with that and want to spit your dummy out over Sunday’s result then go off to bed right now for a few months and awake nice and bright come May just in time to watch some quality cricket as being a football fan just isn’t for you.

I love the way people band around '50k per week' about some players as if they have their payslips in front of them. Yes, footballers earn a huge amount and sometimes their performances don't warrant it, but I'd be incredibly surprised if Denilson or Squillaci were on anywhere near that amount.

Our first 11 can beat anyone if they want to . 10 years ago our reserves wouldn't have played such important games en masse. P'raps only one or two changes. Now we are fielding pretty much a full "reserves" 11, if that is what you can call them seeing as most are internationals, in important cup games and they are proving the point that they are not good enough at all. Not once against Orient, Stoke in the cup, Wigan last year, Wigan again this year, at Ipswich, at Braga. I have no problem with the result at Orient, good luck to them as thats what happens in cup games. What is a joke is that the squad should have been strengthened with some players who have some heart and look like they want to play for the fans and the club. Unfortunately some of this 2nd string look disinterested and are quite clearly not good enough. Just as Rooney described some of the United squad as not being up to it, well the same can be said of ours. All we ask is that some of the drivel is taken out and replaced by players who want to play for us. Talking of Denilson, why is he playing and Ramsey playing elsewhere on loan?

This just in...footballers get paid a lot of money. Sometimes as much as £50k a week, maybe more.

this rubbish only proves the lengths some people will go to protect wenger. makes you laugh that all these people say wenger has got no money to spend so how can he compete?? well leyton orient competed against arsenal didn't they? their team cost fuck all no doubt, against an arsenal "reserve" team that cost £39m!! reserves my arse.

Reserve players my arse the majority of the team that played against Orient were internationals. No they are a team of players not good enough.Almunia a shit keeper one of the worst ever in our history.Squillaci who makes Cygan look like Tony Adams.Denilson who would die if he ever played a forward pass and of course the self styled best striker in the history of football Billy Big Bollocks Bender.A 6ft 5in plank of wood who although all he does is play football still cannot trap a football. What the fuck does he do in training?Orient were hopeless yet Wenger praised there performance he should do stand up.If any of the starting 11 other than Sanga and Song start at Wembley we are in big big trouble

Very good article and I understand if not agree with most of the points. However this was not a reserve team, we had over 30 million pounds of "paid for" players on the pitch and I did feel our key weaknesses were exposed for the O's goal. This season is such a roller coaster ride but the carriage is still on the track - If we can win our next 2 games it removes any worries of a motivational team talk in Spain next week. Then with a trophy behind us, we can relax, me included and have a real go at the PL and CL.

denilshit isnt a full international and never will be... man u and chelsea have to employ tactics to beat us...big fucking surprise, arnt tactis what most teams employ....console yourself with the crap fact "o man u and chelsea only beat us cos they altered there tactics" they won for ffs so who gives a shit ....also they won pretty much every meaningful game over th past few years against us, apart from the failing chelsea team this season who are on a rapid decline. perhaps if we had altered tactics we could have won.........

John, I cannot understand your point of view. Bravo Sheriff + James! Any player which cannot beat a team 54 PLACES below them should not wear Arsenal shirt. And they get GBP 50-60K per week - all multi millionaires!? Ship the usual suspects out, get young lads-on-loan back, buy 1-2 super players. If not, ship Arsène Wenger out of our Club. End of the story.

I thought this was far better performance than the one, say, against Ipswich at Portman Road when Fabregas, Walcott, Djourou and Arshavin all played. It was an often seen performance by any Arsenal team if we’re honest. Monopoly of possession, not making it count, the sucker punch. The ‘first team’ have put in some abject displays this season (Newcastle at home) but I don’t want to reinforce this current first team/second team division that some of the fans want to create. Has our much derided ‘second team’ even lost a game? Let’s just reign it in a bit. Some people seem obsessed to find scapegoats. Denilson – our old pal, comes in for yet more stick off Fozzy and his goons yet didn’t put a foot wrong on Sunday. Bentdner needs to pull his feckin’ socks up though.

    Feb 22, 2011, 16:03 #2574

I FIND the 1st three paragraphs of this article all WRONG?? Im sure 11 years ago, you didnt have a team of reserves who were on 60K a week and various long term deals! Nor were there any internationals playing reserve team football..Last weeked Arsenal fielded a team of Internationals apart from Miquel, Alumina and Denilson.. Dont lets make any excuse for themm if a team that has Alumina, Bendtner, Song, Squillaci, Gibbs, Sagna, Chamakh Rosicky and Arshavin cannot beat a team 54 PLACES Below them or show decent performances, then they SHULD not be at Arsenal and be paid £60k a week

  18. Whinger_OUT_NOW

    Feb 22, 2011, 15:59 #2573

And if this same "reserve" team had won the game or ties against Ipswich, the same AKB's would have been mouting off about how "Wenger Knows", "Wenger was right in not buying", "Wenger has built a team capable of rotation" and other such choice tosh. And John Evans, do you know what the difference between a reservce team and a second team is? The only player yesterday who could legitimately pass off as a reserve player was Miguel. Maybe Gibbs. Otherwise, every single one of those players in this and past seasons has turned out on multiple occassions. Heck, Whinger spent 3 years trying to convince everyone that Almunia was a great goalie. Squilacci has 20+ appearances for Arsenal already this season. None of Chamakh, Arshavin, Song etc. could be termed as reserve players Once again, people need to stop proving themselves to be complete morons, by way of stupid excuses, just to offer excuses on behalf of Whinger. Whatg we had out there was an effective second team that simply was not upto the task and in effect, our second team will never ever be up top the task because there are too many below average players that are stars only in Whinger and the AKB's eyes.

    Feb 22, 2011, 14:37 #2572

I largely agree with everything you say, John. As other posters have commented I would say calling it a reserve team is stretching it a bit, but clearly there were 7 or 8 'second string' players in the line up. The fact of the matter is we lacked a bit of spark in the final third and paid for not taking one of the few clear cut chances we created. A bad day at the office? Yes. A catastrophe in the context of our season? Absolutely not. I've said it before and I'll say it again, it is incredibly difficult for 8, 9 or 10 squad players to come in cold for a game and find a cohesive rhythm straight away. But there is no way we can criticise Wenger for making the changes - the first XI had given a huge amount against Barca and in the cold light of day we had two bigger matches on Wednesday and Sunday coming up.

The last article I read was Kevs, if your interested you should read my two reactions to his article about the Orient game (it is a lot like this article). as someone said they are not reserves, they are 1st team squad players and as we have seen on 4 or 5 occasions already this season they are not up to the job. the problem as i see it is that when we have money to spend but have to keep watching the clown in goal, diaby, eboue, denilson, rosicky etc then we have a right to complain. dont thinkl these 5 would get into any top 10 premier league side

Speedtiger - No one denies that Van Persie is a massive player for us but Bendtner did well when he got a run in the team as centre forward last season. He scored crucial goals in 8 or 9 consecutive games as I recall. Chamakh did well at the start of the season when VP was injured and got himself in to double figures. While I think neither are world beaters (I personally would sell Bendtner if we got a decent offer for him in the Summer) in truth both have deputised pretty well for VP. Chamakh, especially, is suffering from a lack of confidence with the realisation he’s not the preferred striker but we have to hope he can come good again. Without their contributions we would be in a weaker position this season. Let’s have a bit more faith.

    Feb 22, 2011, 11:56 #2562

Replays replays replays - its all good in my opinion. It keeps the players who arent regular first teamers fresh and gives them games. Mr Bendtner you are now playing week in week out now perform! Ok we have a pile up of games but is that really a problem for professional sportsmen. Go out of a competition and we will be left with 7 day breaks for players. Keep the games coming thick and fast and keep the 'reserve' players stamina up so if they are called upon for the 'big' games they are 90 mins match fit! Come on you Gooners!!!

Not sure I'd call the team for Orient the reserves. These are first team players, internationals and highly paid. Song, Sagna and arguably Arshavin woudl be in our first choice side. Only Ignasi Miguel is a genuine Reserve team player. Other than that I agree with what you say about the Orient draw. Not a big deal and positive is that the same side, and surely it will largely be the same side (although I wouldn't play Aluminia ever again), will get another 90 minutes to improve their form. Also like what you say about the Barca tie. But I am concerned that we can keep three balls juggling (after this Sunday) given how we have performed in the final stretch of the last 3 seasons. Winning on Sunday would help.

"Sure we lost 1-0 but could have easily come away with something" "United in recent seasons have found a way that seems to have defeated us time and time again and these tactics that they and Chelsea have used with good effect over the past five seasons or so are all based around a robust solid defence and a very hard working, almost man handling, midfield." All the above really bodes well doesn't it? Yes no-one's second string is as good as their first but the point (and why Man U and Barcelona have won the league in the last six years and we haven't) is when the players come into the starting line up because of injuries/suspensions they do well enough to win the points. I hope I'm wrong but if we do beat Orient then we have to win the current hardest match in English domestic football to progress in the FA Cup or your article is going to look pretty stupid.

  32. JJB

    Feb 22, 2011, 11:46 #2559

Very good article! Good point about the tactics employed by Manure and Chelski against us, Ferguson employs a counter attacking formation against us every time we play them and it has worked, as you say Barca don’t do this. Arsenal + Barca both play their own style, they do not adapt tactics against a specific opposition and hence why Wenger rarely adopts specific roles against certain teams. @James - You are the one talking firmly out of your arse mate! The term "reserves" simply means the second XI, of course they are internationals you idiot! Remember the days of stefan malz and alberto mendez, (you probably don’t as you no doubt started supporting after 2002). A club like Arsenal will only have International's in the 25 man squad! It is expected and required, now believe it or not just because a player represents his country this does not mean they are good enough to get in our first team! Any of the first XI can slip into the "reserve" team if their form disappears (aka Arshavin) and they can also be promoted from the "reserve" team if they are playing well.......this how a top level club has to operate! As long as the 1st XI are playing as well as ours are currently then I’m not that bothered about the fringe players! My concern for our trophy quest this season is that competing on 4 fronts means that we could run out of steam and as we have seen, when the first XI is not playing we struggle! That said, Le Boss knows what he is doing and he will rotate as he sees fit….we can’t realistically win all 4 (as much as I would love too)…I’d happily sacrifice the FA cup if it means we remain in the league and champions league hunt!

Many of what might be considered our best reserve cohort are away on loan, Ramsey, Lansbury and JET would all have played , and maybe injected some dynamism. Assuming we get through the replay, I have been amused by the prospect of that same team of ours playing the Man U team that played Crawley. It could set some record stats for misplaced passes and lousy final balls. Hardly a great prospect for the TV companies. I somehow doubt either club will follow that route in team selection. Btw, Barcelona will be without Valdes, I gather, and what he is good at is sweeping behind the less than speedy Pujol when opponents break. Arsenal can and must score, but need to concentrate at the back like never before. What worries me most is the fact that we have to play Stoke and Birmingham in between. What chance of getting through thoose without injury?

  37. James

    Feb 22, 2011, 10:29 #2554

Talking out your arse. In the old days "Reserves" would hardly get a game in the first team. These days you have more squad rotation, so the players that played against Orient were not reserves, they are full team players that are usually either in the team or on a 7 man bench. How can you call Chamakh, Rosicky, Song, Arshavin, Bendtner, Squillaci, Almunia, Denilson reserves? They are all full internationals.

John, Thank you for your very positive spin on our current situation. Unfortunately, we shot ourselves in the foot once again on Sunday. If some of our second string had put in a decent shift we could have won the match. Unfortunaterly, the usual suspects failed to do that hence we're saddled with another fixture we really could do without. As for Orient's goal Almunia looked suspect as the ball went beneath hime. Unfortunately, Wenger's failure to strenghten the squad may cost us yet again as it did in previous seasons. For example, if RVP got injured again, which is very possible, do we have any serious options up front? Please don't suggest Bendtner. For the moment everything in the garden does look indeed look rosey but it all could change very quickly and we need to be very realistic about that!
