Time to strengthen the squad by calling in some loanees?

Bring ‘em home!

Lansbury: What will he gain by remaining at Norwich?

The hard-fought, scrappy but highly satisfying win over Stoke highlighted a number of things about Arsenal today; undoubtedly the team has matured and they coped well with the Delap long throws and lumps like Carew and Shawcross throwing themselves around in the area. Chesney made one excellent save and coped with the aerial bombardment; Djourou also won countless headers and a few misplaced passes apart, I thought he did really well. Let’s hope for the same at the Britannia later in the season.

However, the injuries to Walcott and Cesc, plus the precautionary resting (I hope it was anyway) of RvP and Koscielny and the presence of the Spanish waiter on the bench, worry me, and many others I know. We can bemoan the lack of squad strengthening in the transfer window all we like, but there’s precious little we can do now … except sign players who are available as free agents (that won’t happen and no one who meets Wenger’s expectations will be available on a free – although I gather Jeremie Aliadiere has been released by someone or other), but we do have a huge number of players on loan. Bring ‘em home I say.

I am sure we will need more bodies in the squad between now and the end of the season. Ramsey will be back soon and we have to hope he will leapfrog Denilson and Diaby in the pecking order pretty fast. Lansbury has shown he is more than good enough for the Championship; is he really going to learn much more at Norwich between now and the end of the season? Surely he would gain more from being part of a squad going for four trophies? I for one would rather have him on the bench than Denilson or Eboue.

But why not bring Mannone back too? Surely a top team needs three keepers? And surely he is a better alternative to Almunia, especially after the goal he conceded at Orient? “Don’t let the ball go between your legs Ian” – so said a PE teacher to me in my heyday as goalkeeper at Fitzjohn’s Primary back when being the next Bob Wilson was my ambition. Someone needs to tell Manuel that too.

If I had the choice, I would exercise the option (assuming we have one and if we don’t why don’t we?) to bring Vela, Bartley and JET back too; we will pick up more knocks and short term injuries in the coming weeks. We should have bought, we didn’t – so now we need our manager to manage his resources effectively. The thing is does he have enough bodies? I don’t think so, and while they may be recovering from injury (ie Ramsey), in need of game time (Vela) or relatively inexperienced (Lansbury, and the others), we will need bodies and at least these players have some experience of top level football. As someone once set – “fail to prepare, prepare to fail”.

Augustus, I believe that I mentioned four players that I would like to see replaced in the future, the next transfer window. If I could change things now - yes, Ramsey for Diaby, Mannone as 2nd choice keeper, Lansbury for Denilson and Bartley for Eboue. I would certainly make these changes next season.

Whatever happens in the summer there has to be a cull of the crap that is hanging around our squad picking up big wages.Have Denilson Eboue Diaby and Bendtner really improved over the last 4 seasons?.How much longer are we going to keep saying they will come good one day.when that day never comes. Both Jack and Chezzer have both proved if you are good enough age doesnt matter.

Thanks for highliting this aspect of our squad, although I don't think AW is gonna change it 'till maybe the next season, surely he can see that Almunia and Denilson can be replaced, I like the fact you've mentioned Lansbury and RAMBO, 2 players I would love to see break into the 1st team, and JET too! So much to look forward too, lets kick on now and get this trophy on sunday, I think it will lift the club, pray we make do with the bodies that are there for the moment!

"Wise comments. We need to ship out the dead wood. Eboue, Chamakh, Diaby, Denilson, Almunia, Squillachi, Bendtner and Rosicky." Yeah, alright Steve, we get it that you don't like these players but the question is about whether we bring back the loan players now. We can't 'ship out' those players you mention in February. All the same I'll ask you a hypothetical question though...would you, at this stage of the season, replace those EIGHT players, who are 'dead wood' according to you, with: Mannone, Bartley, Coquelin, Lansbury, Eastmond, Watt, JET and Vela??

I don't think calling back loan players will help our prospects of winning trophies this season. I suppose it wouldn't hinder them but do we really think bringing back Lansbury, JET, Vela and Bartley will be decisive in the push for honours? Nah. I think we'd all like to see the squad re-****uated at the end of the season with some tweaking here and there.

I don't think bringing back any of the loanees would benefit us in any shape or form in all honesty, other than perhaps Manonne. Ramsey is due back soon and it would be better, IMHO, to leave the likes of Lansbury and Bartley to develop further at their respective 'loan' clubs. I cannot believe some are calling for Chamakh and Squillaci already, this is their FIRST season at the club and they have not played regularly either. Perhaps the people writing them off are the same ones who wrote off Bergkamp and Henry in their first few months at our club?!? I would like to see Eboue, Rosicky and Denilson depart in the Summer as I really do feel they are not good enough.

Have to agree with Tony, how long do you give players to prove they have what it takes to be a top player ? Alumnia, Diaby, Eboue and Denilson are 'football' brain dead, therefore shall always remain a liability and a disaster waiting to happen. An example - if Diaby replaces Cesc in the CC Final, how difficult shall it be for Bowyer or Gardner to get him sent off ? I would be more confident to have Ramsey, Lansbury, Mannone and Bartley as the future with the deadwood like Diaby cut out and sold. If Alumnia plays on Sunday shall he be captain and lead the team out, it disgusts me every time I see him with the arm band on.

Totally agree the likes of Denilshit Eboue Diaby and Billy Bender have been at the club long enough and have proved they are not good enough.Just look how Jack and Szczesny have taken their chance this season.Boot out the shit in the summer and give Lansbury Bartley Miquel Frimpong and Ramsey their chance

Almunia has shown his level of calamiy in orient replay. Arsenal....wenge...needs 2 prepare very hard. Sacrifice his power 4 d final just 2 carry d cup.......

I would bring Bartley back, but thats it at the moment, the strength of the squad is immense at the moment, I would still tinker on bartley because I do not want to disturb the chemistry of the squad. Trust me you are not as wise Wenger. WENGER HAS BEEN TRAINING THESE PLAYERS FOR MOMENTS LIKE THESE. COUNT YOURSELF LUCKY WE ARE IN ALL FOUR COMPS!

Steve - you list players that 'have done nothing for Arsenal for years', funny seeing that Chamakh and Squillaci haven't even been at the club for a single year yet. As for Bendtner, in just the last 2 games he has assisted goals that have ensured we stay in the hat for the FA Cup and secured 3 points in the league. He's no RVP but still has a part to play. I seem to remember Eboue doing well against the best team in the world the other day too. The players you brand 'dead wood' are part of what has been a very successful squad (so far) this season. I do think there is a place in the squad for some of the youngsters, but I'm not sure we need the numbers at this moment, I'm not even sure they'd get on the bench.

Lansbury is the only one I would bring back now, rest need to stay where they are for their development. Ramsey's loan ends on Saturday anyway so he will be back.

Hmmm... Interesting but best to keep then where they are - The Future King Henri II is developing nicely on East Anglia - would be a shame to bring him back as he is playing every week at the moment and will be a better player for it next season. I would give Vela a run of 20 games before deciding on him too. Ditto for JET. But the future is very very very bright.

Wise comments. We need to ship out the dead wood. Eboue, Chamakh, Diaby, Denilson, Almunia, Squillachi, Bendtner and Rosicky. These players are french or have been influenced by french thinking and have done nothing for arsenal for years. We need to bring in fresh english talent, like JET, Afobe, Lansbury, Frimpong and Miquel. These players have not been contaminated by fenchness and are the future.

I am really not sure we need to call the loanees, with the current team we've managed to get to the Carling Cup final, remain second in the premiership, and continue in the FA Cup and champions league...... what would the loanees add to that, not alot! We need to believe in Wenger........ he is probably the best manager in England at the moment and knows exactly what he is doing. He has brought a young team to fruition and now they are on the verge of winning something. It would be nice to see Ramsey come back into the side, but apart from him, would any others do better than the current 24/25, I doubt it. Supporters have often criticised the likes of Rosicky, Squillaci, Almunia, Eboue, Bendtner, Chamakh and Arshavin..... but without them the gunners wouldn't be on the verge of a Carling Cup triumph, FA cup quarter final, Champions League Quarter final and just one point behind Man Utd in the premiership...... get a grip, we have one of, if not, the best team in the world........ enjoy while you can because if the Wenger Out supporters are successful in their demands......... we'll be lucky to end up like Stoke.

Good call on Mannone. I'll be disgusted to see Almunia in the Orient replay. Give the game to Chesney. But disagree with your dismissal of Diaby. Now that Cesc is out fo the final, I won't be surprised if we see Diaby boss the midfield. Consistency is a problem with him, but don't bracket him with that sideways-passing fool Denilson. Diaby is a top talnt on his day and a matchwinner. And as this will be his first game since the sending off, I can see him doing something special. Diaby for the winner?
