Trophy Hunt Goes on (Till May!)

Trophy Hunt Goes on (Till May!)

Nou Camp – 40% chance of progressing from here

No trophy on Sunday then. It was a painful experience to take and one that leaves us close to being six years without having a trophy to clean.

I have got to say I thought on the contrary to what the media and the pundits have had to say about the game yesterday we were more than a little on the unlucky side. The Birmingham second goal was a one in a million event, I for one can not remember a clanger being dropped quite on that level in a cup final before. For me the Seaman howler against Nayim in Paris in 1995 does not compare in the slightest. Overall though if you look at the game in hindsight we certainly didn’t play at our best but we were still the better side and should have won the game. I can’t remember more than one save in the 90 minutes from our man between the sticks whereas Foster in goal for the Blues must have made a minimum of six decent quality saves to keep the score level going into the 90th minute.

The pundits/media were all so anti-Arsenal that it was embarrassing. They were wetting themselves with praise for the Blues pretty much claiming it to be the performance of a lifetime. Fair play to them they did play well but come on they didn’t exactly play us off the park did they? They stuck to the cause 100% and got lucky when they were gifted the winning goal in the last minute. If that makes them the pride of Britain for conquering us then Britain can go f*** itself as far as I am concerned.

People will say the game summed up our lack of a winning mentality but for me that is a little unfair and it is a far too early a call in the season to make. We are still very much in the hunt for three trophies, all of which are more important that the one we have just lost out on. At the beginning of the season if we had gone out of the League Cup no-one really would have battered an eyelid yet now because we made it to the final, one defeat and the world is coming to an end. What we have to realise and accept is the simple fact that in football anything can happen on any one given day and so it was that yesterday happened to be our one in ten chance that we would go on to lose against inferior opposition.

We are all disappointed at not lifting a trophy as it does hurt but if we hadn’t gone six years without one would we be so gutted by yesterday’s result? Certain players for me didn’t perform on the day and when that happens you stand a greater chance of losing the game. Birmingham are not quite as bad as their current league position would imply and I for one would be very surprised if they were relegated this season as other teams seem to be a whole lot worse to me.

The one thing that did stand out though was their overall commitment to the cause. I heard an interview with their centre back Johnson after the game where he mentioned he got a calf strain in the second half but there was simply no way he was ever going to come off, he kept going and seemed to run the injury off and at no point was substituted. Could we really expect to see the same levels of spirit and commitment from an Arsenal player? For me the answer would have to be no - which I guess is a sad state of affairs on some level But overall I would rather have the quality over the grit every time, we just need to mix it up slightly more than we have done in recent times and then the trophies will come.

We are on the right path, of that there is no doubt as we do have more steel about us now than two or three years ago. Jack was the man of the match again from an Arsenal point of view and with Cesc to return by the weekend we will be more creative than we were yesterday in the coming matches.

The negatives for me yesterday were the performances of Song, Nasri, Arshavin and Rosicky (why he was in the team I do not know, when was the last time we won a game with him in the starting XI?) Obviously the fingers will be pointed firmly at our goalkeeper but for me it is a little unfair, he is young and learning his trade, he will make mistakes. Every keeper makes mistakes, look at Seaman against Nayim in Paris 1995 for proof of that. But even with these below par performances for me we were still the better side over the ninety minutes and deserved to win the game.

We still have the FA Cup which come Thursday morning we will be in the quarter finals of. We still have the Champions League to look forward to, where we have a decent chance of progression. I feel if we played the second leg 10 times from the position we are in after the first game we could expect to progress from it four times out of ten - which against a Barcelona side that is reputed to be the best on the planet doesn’t seem too bad a position to be in. More importantly we have a great chance of success in the Premier League which has to be our number one aim every season.

Quite simply we are one of two teams that can win the title this season. Forget City, Chelsea and Spurs as they will not be champions come May. It will be us or United lifting the coveted trophy and they have a harder run-in than us with a four point cushion to try and protect so it is very much game on. I can see us being three points behind with a game in hand once this week’s matches are out the way so anyone not thinking we are in with a big shout should think again right now.

Personally if someone gave me the position we are in now at the start of the season I would have taken it. One trophy lost in the final minute of the final and three still to play for and we are at the end of February. Let us get over this loss, get Orient dealt with and then look ahead to the remaining games of the season with optimism and expectation as there really is no reason to start feeling sorry for ourselves.

Mate, we were not unlucky...we were just crap. The Brums deserved it overall as we could not even make the most of the luck we did get...we will finish this season as we have the last 5...potless and gutless.

That clanger you mention was imminent as far as I'm concerned. An Arsenal CB and keeper cocking up? Last year Porto away Campbell/Fabianski, 2009 FA Cup semi Wembley same end same scoreline Drogba, Silvestre/Fabianski. It is bound to happen at Arsenal under the Wenger school of defending. Trevor Francis said at half time that it is obvious that Arsenal do not work at defending set pieces on the training ground. I remember AW being questioned after the shock loss to Hull at The Grove when we conceded from a corner. Interviewer asked if it would be back to the training ground to sort it out. His words were 'I don't think its something to do on the training ground, it's just a matter of commitment.' Make of this what you will.

You wouldn't expect an Arsenal player to carry on with an injury? What about Arshavin playing as a lone striker last year for weeks with a foot injury? What about Fabregas staying on in the 2-2 draw with Barca with a broken leg? Give me a break man? If you want to get down on the team, at least get your facts correct. Otherwise go support Su*rs or someone else!

Can't blame this one on bad luck. Squad not good enough. Lack experience. Lack proper captain. No plan B. Heartless. Bring on Barca...

Where was the other saves apart from the one I mentioned? He made one save worth mentioning from Zigic in the first half and that was it. Foster made save after save, a minimum of six and yet we are made to feel like Birmingham deserved their victory without a shadow of doubt because of the media's love affair with all things shite. This countries media and overall attitude to teh underdog is summed up by the love everybody had for Jimmy White and the complete hatred they had for Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry. The average joe has more in common with a White than a Davis or Hendry and in this instance more in common with a Birmingham than an Arsenal. This is beacause the average joe has less ability than a plank of wood and is jealous of anything that makes them feel inferior. We as a club should be proud of the way we do things and I am sure we will be bringing the trophies back to the club very soon but lets not kid ourselves that some toher club deserves to win more than us simply because they are the underdogs, you have to look at the game from a level playing field point of view and in that context we didnt really deserve to lose.

Nice blog. Well balanced view point. This team makes us suffer but there is still plenty to go over the next 3 months.

John - I don't know what game you were at or watching but from my vantage point behind the goal I saw Chesney make one excellent save from old 'Mr Immobile' Zigic himself. You also seem to have forgotten the Bowyer incident in the 1st 3 minutes which I have now heard wasn't offside after all. The real problme was the ridiculous team selection of 3 players hardly likely to win a tackle all game. Wenger's arrogance of 'my small skillful players will beat your tough tackling hard working players' was the problem

Johny AKB, it DOES NOT matter that Birmingham did not play us out of the park. That's the same, sad old excuse Whinger uses when his team loses due to a lack of bottle. Oh wait, I forgot minions always tend to use their master's voice. WHAT matters is this: Arsenal 1 Birmingham 2 with Birmingham taking home the cup. Possession, shots etc. are all a part of history. The scoreline is THE ONLY thing that matters How much longer before you understand that earth shattering bit of fact?

So we had the most chances and were in the asadency but we were not unlucky to lose? How does that make sense? Sure Birmingham hit the post and should have had a penalty in the first half but we had by far the most chances in the game and should have won, that is fact. Why is it in this country every man and his dog loves an underdog? If a team is shit why do they deserve more support than one that is not? If Alan Shearer and Alan Hansen drool so much over Birmingham's performance yesterday why do they not treat themselves to a season ticket at Stoke every year? We were crap by our own standards but were still the better team yet we feel the need to bum up the blues to the extent of saying we were lucky to be in the game with a minute to go just because they showed a bit of endeavour, that in my humble opinion is bullshit as if anyone bothered to watch the 90 mins again would see that apart from maybe 10 minutes near the first Birmingham goal we were the better team and should have won but for an almighty cock up

Love your optimism but I can't see us winning a trophy this season. Rationally, if we can't beat Birmingham City over 90 minutes with silverware on offer, we haven't a hope of beating Manyoo to the league or FAC and if (big if) we somehow manage to get past Barca, we would still be five intensive, pressure filled games against some of Europe's top sides away from the CL. These pussies will bottle it, again.

You thought we were unlucky.Brum denied a certain penalty and a man advantage after just a minute.Unlucky?Dont forget Brum also hit the inside of the post in the second half.No we werent unlucky we just didnt turn up

I wouldn't consider ourselves unlucky not to win. I would say that on the balance of chances over the 90 we were well ahead and could have won when we were in the ascendency around 70 minutes. They were underdogs and you could argue they deserved to win based on the the really poor decision that went against them plus for how the hung on in there when really under the cosh in the second half. I agree with what you say, John, about there is still plenty for us to be hopeful about for the rest of the season.

Worth mentioning the press had been drooling over Arsenal prior to kick-off to the extent where it would have been easy to forget who the opposition were. Rightfully so, they deserve all the praise because they won as underdogs. They were never going to play Arsenal off the park. They did however play out a gameplan that worked to perfection. Don't be such a bad loser.

we were "unlucky", eh? What about the fact that we should have been down to 10-men with a penalty against us within 3 mins of the game kicking off? We were dead lucky as far as I'm concerned...and still blew it.
