Forever In Our Shadow...

It’s been a while…

17th April 2011 sees a particular 50th anniversary...

Forever in our shadow you will be,
Your hearts full of pain and jealousy,
It’s fifty years since you won the league,
Tottenham Hotspur – Happy Anniversary

We think of our glory since that date,
’71, ’89, ’91, ‘98
2002, 2004, ‘The Invincibles’,
It’s what you’d all die for.

Never mind Tottenham – accept your fate,
We’re the Arsenal, North London’s only great.

Gemma Pollard 2011

They won the league... in black and white, They won the league in black and white! Andrew Cohen - would you not be saying the same if you'd totally and utterly overshadowed us, for easily 20 years!? You've won battles along the way (albeit not very many) but you simply cannot deny that we've been better than you!

The last time the "always in our shadow" thing, which is liverpudlian in origin and aimed at us, made an outing, was before our home defeat to Spurs. Our strength is in our ability NOT to think that we have a god given right to success. If you want to see the re-emergence as a footballing power of those who think a sickly looking chicken on a white shirt is an inspiration, then keep tempting fate. AW is not, at least at the moment, up to a tactical battle of wills with Harry Redknapp, and he is really quite likely to play some, if not all, of our muppets against them. Perhaps give your poem an airing come St Totteringham's day, if it happens this year.

There is a saying in my family, whenever things get bad or there is a disaster - " No matter how bad things are, they could be worse, you could be a Spurs supporter" Being born in Islington and brought up in a slum, my father did not leave much to the family when he died, but his greatest legacy was that he loved The Arsenal, I inherited that and passed it on to my family and now the Grandchildren. That is what supporting Arsenal is all about, that is our History and Legacy to pass on. I was on the pitch at WHL in 1971 after we won the league and believe me there have not been many better nights than that.
