Two cult leaders proven to be charlatans

Do you still believe?

Not only was the infuriating cult of Eboue finally put to bed forever at the Grove on Sunday, The AKB cult was put in right beside it too. It was after around 10 minutes when I first heard the first murmurings of "Emannuel E-boo-way" to the tune of "Seven nation army" by the White Stripes, all around me in the lower west stand, I could feel my teeth involuntarily start to grind a little and my eyes narrow a bit as I gave my friends around me my pre-match review of Emmanuel Eboue "Great chant, great tune. rubbish player." I know a lot of you are either only joining in the chant in a very tongue in cheek way or many of you are just trying to support the poor guy, but, come on Ladies and Gents, his time with us has got to be over now, hasn't it?

After that infamous Wigan game in 2008 I felt genuinely disgusted with myself for joining in the booing of Eboue, Not many of us will own up to being part of that scandal, and with good reason, because, it was in hindsight a very ugly afternoon indeed in the history of Arsenal F.C. You can probably never justify booing and jeering one of your own players as a home crowd of 60,000 but Emmanuel Eboue sure does push those buttons, doesn't he? We didn't really want to see Eboue leave the field in tears that afternoon against Wigan, as a substitute being substituted, but we didn't want to see him still playing for us in 2011 either!

All the sympathy chants must stop, right now, and this cult of Eboue crap must be put away with the rest of the toys. Emmanuel Eboue is simply not fit to wear the shirt or play in the position that Lee Dixon played in. He is a right winger, not a right back, just a very, very ineffective right winger pretending to be a full back and being played out of position by his tactically inept manager.

He has played 212 times for Arsenal notching up only 10 goals and 24 assists despite playing as an attacking full back, right winger and right outside forward at various times during his saven year Arsenal career. Do those stats scream "He looks great going forward" at you? No they do not, because his numbers are quite frankly, appalling. Yes, he does like to go on an exciting looking, meandering run but there is simply not enough end product coming from him and his frequent Shakespearian dives, face first into the grass, feigning injury and rolling around like he's just been shot in the thigh by a sniper have not exactly endeared him to a large section of the Arsenal faithful. Wait, What's that I hear you all cry? "Does he look any good defensively?" The short answer is no, he certainly does not.

Lee Dixon on ‘Match of the Day 2’ had the following pearls of wisdom for his successor as an Arsenal full back, whilst reviewing the penalty incident on screen. Lee exclaimed "Eboue, what are you doing?" and "What's he doing there? Last kick of the game!" Lee Dixon was of course watching in horror, as we all were, as Emmanuel Eboue shoved Lucas needlessly in the back therefore awarding Liverpool a penalty in the 10th minute of injury time. Dixon then went on to say what 60,000 Gooners had said at the time, that it was a stupid, pointless foul because Lucas was heading away from goal at the time! In what HAD TO BE the last action of the game Eboue did not use what little brain he has to any of its limited capacity whatsoever as he shoved into the back of Lucas and he obviously panicked, just as the rest of the Arsenal team were so obviously panicking around him.

It was Kamikaze defending from Eboue in a team full of potential warriors, prone to a wee bit of hari-kari at the back. Arsenal now have one of, if not the worst, records for holding on to leads this season in the Premiership because, my fellow Gooners, the evidence says that this keeps on happening to us again and again and time after time after time. Eboue surely isn't the greatest right back in the world but has he ever shown us any really great defensive qualities? Is Eboue to blame for not being good enough or is Arsene Wenger to blame for still picking a player that many of us knew way back in 2008, was not fit to wear the Arsenal shirt? Is it Emmanuel Eboue's fault this time that we drew the game? Yes, but, before him it was Clichy at Sunderland, Almunia against West Brom as well as Szczesny and Koscielny against Birmingham who were the villains for the day.

Arsene Wenger has allowed a culture to develop at the club wherein defending is seen as the ugly unimportant side of the beautiful game, an unnecessary evil, never to be again spoken of in training. Eboue does not pick the team or coach the rest of the team. Yes, he is a stupid idiot of a defender but he is not responsible for the fact that Arsenal just cannot defend.

Arsene Wenger must get a defensive coach in to sort out this motley crew of his or he will never win a trophy for us ever again. Same kind of stupid mistakes late in big games, different personnel, The only common factor in the 4-4 draw with Newcastle, the 2-1 loss to Birmingham, the 3-2 loss to Tottenham and this 1-1 draw with Liverpool is that Arsene Wenger was and still is, both the manager and head coach of the team. The ultimate responsibility for Arsenal's defensive shortcomings must rest solely with Arsene Wenger and his inability to coach the art of defending. If Wenger cannot coach defenders then why doesn't he let somebody else have a go at it?

And why doesn't he make life easier for himself and buy some quality defenders? Only the man himself knows the true answers to those questions but Arsenal fans who have "never worked even half a day in football in their lives" are going to keep on asking them until they are answered. Arsene clearly doesn't always know best when it comes to goalkeepers and defending and many of us are now seriously questioning his ideas on the more attacking aspects of the game too.

Arsenal have scored no goals from open play in three consecutive home matches in the league now and that has everything to do with our predictable style of play and lack of cutting edge in the final third. Teams have figured out how to cope with what Arsenal always try to do and even John Hartson, also on ‘Match of the Day 2’ was saying that he thought it might be an idea to buy a "20-25 goal a season striker, someone to stay in the box and help Van Persie". He also said "in order to take it to the next level, Arsene Wenger has to go out in the summer and buy big on a top top front man"

John Hartson is only saying what a lot of Gooners are already saying. Arsenal need a bit of quality to be added up top, as well as at the back, to give the opposition a bit of a different threat to think about rather than just concentrating on preventing Arsenal from passing the ball into the net. I let out a low sad sigh of a laugh when I heard John Hartson say, "I just don't think Chamakh and Bendtner are good enough, in my opinion" and thought yes John, me and you both Mr. Hartson. If Lee Dixon, John Hartson and everyone else can see the huge problems at Arsenal then Arsene Wenger really must have problems with his eyesight because we are going backwards as a team and that simply cannot be allowed to continue.

Wenger bringing on Bendtner as a winger and delaying the inevitable Arshavin cameo for as long as humanly possible are grave mistakes typical of Wenger but they pale in comparison to the fact that Darren Bent of Aston Villa has scored more goals in recent seasons than all of our strikers put together.

What happened on Sunday at Ashburton Grove was the most gutting, heartwrenching capitulation of the season so far and surely must show us that Arsene doesn't always know best and no one really only came to see Eboue.

Joe good to see you have adopted my Wenger sceptic phrase! I agree that those who will not and cannot accept the weakness of an argument/opinion is a fanatic. My father in law who didn't go yesterday as fed up with the status quo told me he studied AW via the tv pictures. He said his expressions and crazy demeanour looked like that of a man on the edge. He was seriously worried about his sanity. His problem is that his arrogance will not let him even consider the possibility that he may have been slightly awry and the rest of us mortals have the tiniest inkling of sense. This arrogance will unfortunately stop him from being a truly great manager.

Fozzy's mate- I still respect Wenger for everything he has done for the club and he and his invincible side will forever have a place in all of our hearts. You're right, I did used to get into debates about Arsene Wenger and I did stick up for him but not to any crazy level where I couldn't criticise Wenger, AT ALL. That's ludicrous. Anyone, of any opinion who cannot change that opinion based on repeated experience and new evidence to prove the contrary is a fanatic, and is Dangerous. I am now officially a Wenger- skeptic and think he needs a whole new coaching team and/or big signings to win us the premiership. If he cannot do those things for the good of the club then he should go, we cannot be happy with 2nd to Man united or man city for the next 20years. I'm genuinely worried that I'll never see Arsenal win the league again in my lifetime. All regimes need freshening up, otherwise they become dictatorships.

Every player that has played competitive sport makes mistakes. Yesterday, it was Eboue, a few weeks ago it was Almunia. The only person not to make a mistake is Wenger - it's always something or someone elses fault - the referee, the international break, the pitch, the opposition defenders defending, the tv fixture schedule.......

Sorry to repeat myself Joe, as you know my mantra is that everyone is more than welcome to an opinion. However until recently you were a fully paid up and indoctrinated member of the AKB cult, which stated that anyone not worshipping AW was a ++++ who should retreat to a pub in white hart lane. I saw the writing on the wall when the true arrogance of the man was demonstrated some years ago when at a televised meeting shareholders politely asked (prefaced by the obligatory grovelling) why he has purchased Silvestre? The vitriolic reply they received said it all and encouraged the bile spewed by the said cult to any non believers. It is easy to be gracious when everyone hangs on your next word. What he does not realise is that he does not own the club, however the supine outgoing dough trousering board inflated his ego to an outrageous level. If you love or hate him, or like most are slowly but surely falling out of love with him, if you pay your fee you are allowed an opinion. A fact sadly ignored by the AKB cult.

Leigh, Are you serious? Eboue can't defend - never has been able to, never will be able to. It has been a truism from his very first season in the team - which, if you remember, was full of matches where his exposure defensively was being picked out regular on football highlight programmes. That is why Sagna was bought, not because Wenger thought he Eboue was the new Cristiano Ronaldo!! And even when he has been played as a winger, what has been his contribution? Like others have mentioned, not good enough to be an Arsenal player.

To all the Eboue cult followers.Eboue was such a great right back that when Sagna got injured for the run-in in 2008 who did Wenger pick to play right back?Eboue? No it was Kolo Toure. So all you AKB freaks defending this clown think back to 2008.And if Eboue was such a great right back why did Wenger replace him with Sagna? Why because Sagna is a million times better than comedy Eboue.Sagna PFA team of the year again.Would Sagna have given that penalty away yesterday? No ****ing chance.Eboue is just a glorified cheerleader

Leigh, if you genuinely believe that eboue was one of the best players on the pitch on sunday then you certainly need your eyes testing unfortunately. Gave the ball away needlessly on more than one occasion, out of position and what on earth was he doing staying down while liverpool attacked down his side, pretending to be hurt and then once we had cleared it for aq corner he then springs up and runs back, emmanuel eboue needs to f**k off out of arsenal, sorry seems a lovely guy but sub standard footballer, we are arsenal not blackpool!

    Apr 18, 2011, 16:59 #5280

Oh such a small memory, a few seasons back Eboue was one of the best right backs in the league- so good wenger thought he was wasted at the back so sagna was bought enabling him to play right mid- where he has no clue. Eboue has always proved he is a top RIGHT BACK and was one of the shining players on Sunday. This was until Lucas ran to keep the ball in before suddenly slowing down. Eboues momentum then took him into him, anyone who has ever played the game will see there's not much he could have done, leave the boy alone.

Dave....Liverpool had a 17 year old rightback only playing his second game and he was far better than our clown. The young lad they brought on to mark Walcott was sound in defence surely we can nurture/find young talent as good as that instead of playing dross?

@Andy, post 5743. If you really believe it was not a penalty and that you don't see those given all the time then, I can't understand you. Eboue was just plain stupid and doesn't know how to play as a full back and isn't great in any other position either! if you want to continue with singing that idiots name then good luck to you.

WTF? Why are the AKB's hiding out here? Aren't you lot ashamed of yourselves that you're STILL defending this manager and his nincompoop players such as Eboue and Song? The lot of you should be rounded up and flogged in public along with your brainless leader.

Brilliant Article Joe. So, so obvious to so, so many fans that attend games that there has been a clutch of players for a few years now who just plainly are not good enough to be in a squad competing for the League title. We are bordering on an embarrassment now with the amount of howlers we have in actually quite alot of our games nowadays. And yet time and time again the manager is not adressing them. He has openly said things like there is no need to talk to the players for mistakes as they know in themselves what they've done wrong. That is simply mad! How can he not say anything at all to them. He has created an environment of not adressing mistakes of the worst kind. We are not learning by any of the previous mistakes that have been made. And I'm not talking mistakes from this season alone. We've been prone to conceding leads for about 5 years now. At the moment I just do not know what the answer is

Dave, Eboue has shown over the years that he is a good defender. Are you having a laugh? Take another look at the blackpool game, On to many occiasons he got caught 10 yards from the man he was marking. We have had some great right backs in my 40 years watching arsenal but eboue is the worst i have seen!

@Herbs over rum, great name btw! I'm not excusing Wenger or any of the teams performance just highlighting the fact that, everyone who has ever played full back in their life can see that Eboue has no positional sense whatsoever and zero decision making ability. I make it very plain that Wenger is to blame because he is ultimately responsible for the coaching at the club! Now I'm all stress mon, time 2 relax now, you get me?

Any further evidence that Arsene Wenger has completely lost the plot? After the match he said it wasn’t a penalty. It was. After the match he still argued with the time. Deal with it. Esp when all you need to do is defend the last kick of the game. As Lee Dixon said – it’s not a foul Winterburn would’ve given away. Sadly, the people will start to blame Eboue for being what he is – an average right midfielder playing out of position. But actually that is the manager’s fault. Denilson, Almunia and Eboue are not going to say “you know what Arsene, I’ll sit this one out, I’m only average”. It’s the manager who picks the squad, team and tactics. He also has the ungracious manner to pick a slanging match at the end with Dalglish. Why? Because you’ve been smoked out? Wenger’s continued defensive attitude and defence of the indefensible in a team which doesn’t defend is particularly ironic (irony that come at a cost of £1200 a season). He’s an angry, busted flush. Still, the one remaining AKB I know came in to the tune of “the ref shouldn’t have played 12 mins instead of 8 blah blah, refs against us…blah blah.” Sorry tough tatties. In some instances that may be so, but this one was entirely of Arsenal’s own doing. No ref, no opposition player, no tv or international schedule is to blame and it’s facile to do otherwise.

    Apr 18, 2011, 12:12 #5248

Yes, we found another creative way to prevent us from winning the match. But it was not Eboué’s fault. On first viewing — perhaps even third or fourth viewing — the penalty looked nailed on. But after watching the video more and more often (call me a sadist) I am now utterly convinced that Eboué did little wrong. In complete contrast, it is Lucas who cuts across Eboué, who is running towards the ball. Lucas does not run towards the ball but runs straight at Eboué and draws the contact. Eboué has eyes on the ball the whole time and even if words like clumsy, careless or just plain silly are those that are normally associated with the Ivorian, there was little he could do to avoid contact here. I think, as much as he frustrates me he deserves to be cut some slack on this occasion. Defending Arsené Wenger Much has been made of Wenger’s post-match complaints and the poor sportsmanship he showed at the final whistle. But let’s give the situation some perspective. His team have just conceded in the 102nd minute to a penalty that he believes is not a penalty (for the same reasons I outlined above), essentially dashing his title hopes in a hurry. Love him or hate him, Wenger works bloody hard for this club and to expect him to act like a gentleman in this sort of situation is utterly ridiculous. Most of the big managers are bad losers. Get over it. That will to win, something that many supporters have complained our team lacks this season, is what makes them big managers. In a perfect world Wenger may have acted more graciously at the final whistle. But this is not a perfect world and just like any fan, emotions were running feverishly high.

ok,eboue made a mistake but at tghe end of the day liverpool dived to get a free kick then dive to get the pen..we were cheated by the ref.they will do anything & everything to stop us challanging Man-who? u crucify eboue but u dont mension fab,was that a true captains peformance?the same one who gave the spuds the pen & the same one who gave barca the goal & the same one who always harping on about going back to barca....oh & nasri the contract rebel who less than amonth ago say he wont leave till we win something, did he play like he had arsenal across his heart? what about theo who couldnt beat an 18 year old sub? why diabi in front of song? its easy to havago at eboue but is it not le mad prof who insist on playing him out of defence?the whole side were to blame for the result...they need to learn how to put the ball in the back of the net & stop passing all the f......g time!when dixon was there we hardly ever beat liverpool or manwho anyway & i dont remember hartson winning much for us either..oh he was good at kicking his own team mates in the face at training sack wenger clear out the team & only keep the players like rvp who want to play for us

Great post but eboue was having a great game yesterday up and till the penalty and he had a good game last week, eboue is a right back not a winger and we will never see the best of him due to lack of playing time. 2006 was his best season, after he was converted to right wing for no reason other than to purchase sagna its not his fault he was played out of position plus how many penalties has kos and clichy given away?

    Apr 18, 2011, 11:54 #5242

I'm sorry but this is really not on. You're ignoring the fact that Arsenal had to rely on a penalty in the 98th minute to get a goal despite dominating the match, and instead solely blaming it on one man. Eboue has shown over the years that he is a good reliable player who tries hard, exactly what we need. Every team needs cover for players, and Eboue does that for Sagna. I doubt many teams in the Premiership had a second right back as good as him.

Let's seperate the man's performances from the man himself. I agree entriely that he shouldn't be playing for Arsenal, that his performances are sub-standard, that he's just not good enough. But it is AW who picks him. Eboue the man seems a decent person. I wish him luck - but somewhere else.
