Thoughts from the Barnet Hills - Who to bring in this summer?

TA: Welcome home?

It has been a while since I last posted an article but needless to say, since February our season has been disappointing - more analysis on that from me in the coming weeks by the way...

It should be a busy summer at the E******s - so let’s put our fantasy hat on and assume we have the combined power of Silent Stan, Ivan Gazidis and Wenger. Who should be added to this Arsenal squad to turn undoubted potential into serial winners? Let us first assume the following are shown the door (fingers crossed);

Eboue - Headless chicken. The Liverpool game was the final nail in his coffin.
Denilson – Readers may remember an amusing article about Deckchair Denilson in the Sun. A colleague told me he couldn't believe the Sun gave a two page spread to the non Brazilian's moans. One can only assume it was a slow news day.
Rosicky – Currently occupying a place in the squad which would be better used for a more effective player. Our ‘Little Mozart’ has never been the same since his "injury"
Clichy - Cannot cope with a ball bouncing over his head. I have a feeling some foolish club will offer silly money. Let’s grab it with both hands and give Gibbs or Cruise a chance at left back.
Bendtner - Like Denilson, had a lot of faith placed in him but fell way short of expectation. The fact that he was used on the wing when he came on this season points to AW's lack of belief in him.
Squillaci – Perhaps harsh to go after one season, but not suited to English football.
Almunia - Simply awful. Adios Manuel!

With those guys gone I would bring in the following:

Tony Adams - Wenger said recently that he may add to his backroom staff, especially with Pat Rice staying only one more year. It would be a good opportunity to bring Adams back into the fold, who proved he was a very capable number two at Portsmouth. Some are born to coach (i.e. Brian Kidd at Man Utd and Man City) and this is where Adams would bring significant value at the E******s. Importantly he would rectify our defensive frailties and install a better mentality amongst players about what it means to wear the Arsenal shirt.

Christopher Samba - At 6ft 4 inches Samba is a towering presence who has three seasons of Premier League experience under his belt. He has also been the Blackburn captain, showing he has leadership qualities. Added to this, the ability to score 4-5 goals per season and his willingness to join Arsenal are arguments for Samba being the key component in bringing stability to the Arsenal back four. Price £12 million.

Karim Benzema - A goal machine who if rumours are to be believed, would choose Arsenal as his preferred destination once he is made surplus to requirements at Real Madrid. Importantly he would relieve the burden on RVP. Remember our lack of goals at home during the latter part of this season? Surely a little more firepower would solve it. Price £25 million.

Clarence Seedorf - 1-0 up with 15 minutes to go? Getting a bit nervy? Squeeky bums and sweaty palms? Well why not bring on a man who has won it all yet never played in England? Yes he is a little old but his experience would be vital in closing out games and he could even start the odd few much like Vieira has done at Manchester City. I think he is out of contract at the end of the season which means he would be free too...

In addition to the four I have mentioned I would keep my eye in pre-season on the following youngsters;

Kyle Bartley - Can play in defence and anchor the midfield. Had a very useful spell at Glasgow Rangers but suffered an unfortunate injury just as he was making a name for himself. Realistically though, regular games and another loan spell in a physical league such as the SPL will serve him better next season.

Emmanuel Frimpong - Good mate of Jack Wilshere's and was on the verge of a squad place last season until he was injured. Without any recognised back up for Song he is definitely worthy of starting a dozen or so games next season.

Henri Lansbury - Played a large part in Norwich's promotion to the top flight and scored at White Hart Lane on his first start last season. A space on the flanks might become available if Rosicky leaves, hence like Frimpong he could force himself into the squad come August.

Jay Thomas - On fire in the reserves but followed that up with mixed performances on loan at Cardiff. Had a poor game in the play-off semi final partly due to his deployment on the left wing. I would rather see him on loan in the Premiership, possibly at Bolton where Wilshere and Sturridge have reaped the benefits in past seasons.

Benik Afobe - Perhaps too early for this possible future goal scoring machine. Doing well at Huddersfield in League One, and if they get promoted I would leave him there and let him ply his trade in the Championship for a season.

Ryo Miyachi - To tell you the truth my knowledge of this Japanese youngster's time at Feyenoord consists of watching YouTube clips. He could be next season's Wilshere, and it will be interesting to see him in the Emirates Cup at least.

So what do you think? Any other suggestions? Arsene can spend £37 million (revenue from player sales will reduce the outlay though) and make our squad a little stronger in terms of quality. Or is even more work needed?

I think Wenger should try to get Wijnaldum (Feyenoord) and Vertonghen (Ajax) and let Ryo at Feyenoord for another year.

Frimpong is a little overrated. Coquelin will get a chance over him. He's been solid at Lorient while on loan. He has a strong engine and is technically better. JET will probably go on loan again. His attitude is just not there. He's more David Bentley than Wilshere really. So much talent but weak mentality. Afobe is too young yet like you said. Miyaichi might play if gets a work permit but chances are he'll be in Holland again next year. Lansbury will only get a chance if we actually sell the players you mentioned. And remember Pedro Botelho is back finally and he's a versatile player on the left and similar in style to Gareth Bale. I expect he'll play a part next year too.

Sami to manu ? i would not rule it out. how do you think Sami feels about Arsenal these days ? if i was him i would put AW in a corner and say i want to see x y z changes otherwise i am off. i dont blame them. quality needs to be backed up by quality not mediocrity

Forget Seedorf. He pledged his future to Milan last night.

All very interesting but at the end of the day its all moot because we won't win anything else with Wenger in charge. Of the youngsters you talk about Afobe and JET are athletic but guile-less. More Rafael Meade and Kevin Campbell than Thierry Henry and Ian Wright. I mean that's okay but probably not an advance on Bendy and Chamakh. Lansbury is worth a go, and Frimpong might be, but really we need experience not yoof. But we don't need over the hill. Seedorf? Why not just going and get Paddy back from ManCity? No, I'd take Parker.

Kieran Gibbs to replace Clichy? That's almost as foolish as the bunch of clowns who said Cashley needed to leave and be replaced by Clichy! The never-ending cycle of bollox at this joke club.... GIBBS IS RUBBISH AND CANNOT DEFEND. HE IS WORSE THAN CLICHY!!! My suggestions: if Bayern really want Clichy, ask for Phil LAHM in part-exchange. Centre half should be Giorgio Chiellini or Gary Cahill. Holding mid should be Schweinsteiger, De Rossi or Defour of JACK RODWELL please. Striker Benzema, Eto'o or Nilmar of Villareal. Problem? NONE OF THESE PLAYERS WILL LEAVE A SINKING TROPHYLESS SHIP.

So Samba plays for a lower premiership club so he cant be good enough for Arsenal.Take a look at the greatest back four ever and tell me where we bought Dixon and Bould from.Yeah little old Stoke. It does my head in when some Gooners say Samba Cahill Hangerland and Parker are not good enough for Arsenal.Have you watched us defend for the last 6 poxy years? They would all walk into Arsenals team now.Not good enough its Djourou Koscielny Squillaci and Song who are not good enough

According to John Evans, Samba is a done deal. Personally I have no reason to doubt this guys post, at last someone at the club who can head the f*****g ball. Parker would obviously be able to add extra defensive protection, leaving the goalscoring to others. Walcott has to be tried up front and the formation changed, 442 is generally the popular consensus. Afobe and Thomas should be given a chance as with Landsbury as they may keep improving, and they will add combativeness and height to a team of dwarfs. Unfortunately Wenger may still persist with players who should have been "killed" a long time ago.

No chance with Seedorf i'm afraid, renewed for another year with Milan today. On the same subject, how about Marcos Senna of Villareal? Maybe he's a bit past it now, who knows - he really should have been signed to replace Gilberto / Flamini / Diarra way back when... even a prick like Van Bommel would be handy to upset the opposition...

The backroom staff needs a shake up as what there doing in training AIN'T WORKING....get Seaman back as GK coach(dump gerry peyton,he was crap when he played)as stated Big Tone as coach,he has experience of premier league and would drill the defence as it should be and someone who teach them to cross a ball higher than 3feet. I would add to leave list Diarby-totally useless, holds on to the ball to long, keeps losing the ball in dangerous area's and hasn't a clue. Song-he's a lump, can't read a game, can't pass more than 5yards,always get caught out of position and gives away stupid fouls just outside the box like Liverpool at home in the last minutes. Wenger should give Lansbury and Bartley there chance next season...why not there can't be worse than what we got?.Then try and get quality like Subotic,Martinez,Toulalan,Mertesacker,Benzema and Billy the Fish.

excellent ideas, i fear that Cesc will leave though & i dont think AW will spend the money we get from him (50mill plus) I like the one about Seedorf too, he proved against the spuds that he can still put a shift in at his age against a premiership team even when those around him dont pull their weight. I would get rid of Koscielny, like Squilaci hes not ready for english football, I would also go for Shay Given, he along with Samba would shore up our excuse of a defence, good point about Frimpong too but i reckon we would still need that Vieira Gilberto or Manu Petit type player, then we might have half a chance

@ Chris Dee: Although my views on Chris Samba differ to your views, I agree with you that it's our defending that has to be looked at. I went to the recent West Ham v Blackburn match and believe me, Samba was awesome at the back for Blackburn. He is exactly what we need. I think it's harsh to say he's found his level at Blackburn. A good number of players over the years look good at mid-size/small clubs before going on to more prosperous times at bigger clubs. But granted, some have also been found out when trying to make the transition from a small/mid-size club to a big club. We could sign as your said, Terry, Ferdinand & Vidic but we would still concede goals through sloppy defensibe play because of the way the players defend as a team. Wenger is too obsessed with attacking that he is seriously guilty of neglecting the defensive side of football. Far too often we have full backs (especially Clichy) who spend too much time attacking and not enough time defending, centre backs who are too concerned with bringing the ball out of defence because according to Wenger "that's very important" and defensive midfielders who are so consumed with jealousy with their more attack minded teammates creating & scoring goals, decide 'I fancy doing that myself thank you very much'. Alex Song cites Claude Makelele as his hero, but I don't recall Makelele spending half of his games in the opponents half. Denison, not even worth pontificating on and as for Diaby, him thinking he's a second striker, do me favour you motherf***er. I too like Frimpong, but for me we must still bring in another DM to allow Frimpong to develop gradually and quietly and challange the talented but arrogant & complacent Song. The defending ethos of Wenger has to change, but we know it won't because he's a stubborn fool. In closing, when Pep Guardiola becomes available after next season, we should whatever it takes to have him on board. It is widely believed that he wants to manage in England and when you consider, he's spent time at out training ground doing his coaching badges and even attending the home game against Aston Villa in December 2009, you know he is taylor made for our club. And before an AKB says we can't get him, bollocks to that. Remember, the dictator Wenger is on a reported £6m a year. So we easily pay even half of that. And contrary to what sections of the media and pundits think, Chelsea & Manchester City are not bigger clubs than The Arsenal because of their so-called 'unlimited resources'. They are clubs with rich owners, not rich clubs. If Chelsea can attract (and stupidly sack) a top-class manager in Carlo Ancelotti and Man City ditto with Roberto Mancini then why can't why, The Arsenal, the third biggest club in England do the same? Let's not be afraid of change. One day AKB's it will happen and like a lot of people, I think for the better. Wenger won't change, contrary to what some people think (mainly AKB's) so therefore, from next summer because it obviously won't happen this summer, we have to change. I look forward to the AKB's giving me the 'f*ck off and go and support Spurs'. People like me speak the truth, you're just too blind (like your God Arsene) to see it and have become supporters of Arsene FC, not The Arsenal.

Only thing you've forgotten here is adding Cesc to the out tray. I see that Barca are using our facilities for the Champions League Final. While this is going on, I guess he'll be fitted out for his new "DNA" kit and given his already paid for one way ticket before he hops on the plane with this new team mates after the final...

Interesting call on Seedorf there Pradeep. I'd love to see Tony Adams back as a coach! the problem is whether or not Wenger will finally admit that he needs help! what about this Hazard fella? will he be able to cut it in the premiership? I'd like to think so!!!

    May 25, 2011, 13:15 #7500

Oh how we need to work on our defensive tactics, its not just about the players we have / need... and 2 goals up should equal switching to 4-4-2 with 2 def players and Theo working off RvP on the break... Def agree TA for his defensive input, Parker should be on our radar though...

    May 25, 2011, 12:46 #7498

Completely agree with chris dee - There is no point getting Samba or indeed Cahill unless there are definite plans to change the defensive setup, from the coaching through to the tactical deployment of players. Signing players will be the easy bit - our dear leader admiting failure and changing his ways and methods will, I fear, prove a step too far.

Hopefully some of the deadwood drift off somewhere ideally 5 or 6 squad players moved on.Who AW brings in no idea same thing every summer names are branded about but never pay that bit extra for quality required.Lets hope the club don't bother with their stupid transfer rumours page waste of time leave that to the tabloids it just winds fans up even more.

Cant se where all this expectation about Samba comes from.Hes a slothful, small Club. mid table tryer at best. Being big, brutish and ugly doesnt quite cut the mustard in CL games, even in the group games. Of the LB s you mention, Gibbs has proved nothing and hasnt show hes worthy of a regular place before an admittedly poor Clichy. A proper LB is needed who likes defending. Cruise? Do me a favour. TA was a legend. What has he seriously done to justfy the job that you and others suggest hes capable of? Seedorf - Lovely fella. Past it by a mile though. Theres a case to sell every player in the squad save for Jack W and arguably RVP, but even with the latter theres a persuasive case to make.

Speaking as a former wenger supporter I am now really worried that the club is about to repeat the mistake we made with Graham. Look at the squad it's full of **** ordinary players brought in by wenger. What makes fans think he will bring in the right players even with money. He has well and truly seen his best days. It's a crying shame and I really don't want to see the man slaughtered but it's time for him to go. Letting him spend a chunk of money on players is wrong. Pay him off. Let's remember him for when he was great. And let the club start to live in the today again. This future talk is and always will be a pile of ****. Let's be honest we are the biggest club in London. A massive fantastic power house of football. Time for the supporters to feel proud again. A new young manager would massively lift the place. This should be our biggest signing.

its yet another transfer speculation summer for Arsenal. lies, damned lies, statistics and spin will pour out of the Emirates from now to mid august. Benzemar is a make weight to make the transfer work for madrid not a real afc target. its spin spin spin all the way and i for no longer fall for it. i would prefer radical surgery starting with the management team to be changed and the culture of the club to be tweaked back towards what it was up until 2005

Wenger cannot be trusted to steward more good players into passless, defenseless clones. The only change of any value is the manager. Let the new guy build in his image. Wenger has shown us his vision. And it stinks

Are you genuinely suggesting that we should seel Clichy and replace him with one of Gibbs and Cruise? Gibbs obviously has ability but his performances at the end of the season (and chronic injury) prove he cant be relied upon. And Cruise?! He could barely get into the first XI at Carlisle, the only reason youve mentioned him is because you remember his name. Also Miyaichi can't play at the Emirates due to lack of work permit.

    May 25, 2011, 9:39 #7476

i would also sign a keeper - Given or Schwarzer to develop Chesney further - and Scott Parker in midfield - but can we realistically expect AW to sign 4 or 5 players??

  32. chris dee

    May 25, 2011, 9:24 #7474

Christopher Samba!Yeah sure, let's grab him before United,Chelsea,City or European giants Barca,Real etc snap him up.None of these teams even if they required a centre half would touch him. He's found his level at Blackburn. Trouble is, we could bring in John Terry,Vidic,Ferdinand and any world class defender to the club but if Wenger doesn't put a more practical defensive system in place or doesn't solve the problem of conceding goals from free kicks which has lasted for 4 frigging years, they would all end up as nervous wrecks just as Djourou,Squillaci,Koscielny have become. And people forget that just prior to his injury Vermaelen had suddenly become a tippy tappy namby pamby non physical shadow of the player he was at the start of his Arsenal career thanks to all of his aggression and defensive qualities being knocked out of him by Arsene's shameful ignoring of defensive stability that all trophy winning teams require.
