Prepare for the Europa Cup

Will it be a season of Thursday and Sunday matches?

Prepare for the Europa Cup

RVP – Banned for the first leg

I haven’t checked the UEFA site and the rules for registering players, but I doubt any players signed before we play Udinese could actually take part in those matches. So any purchases in the next 10 days are probably irrelevant as far the qualifying matches for the Champions League are concerned.

Having seen the way in which Benfica ripped Arsenal apart for much of the second half, and ignoring the profusion of youngsters who were thrown into the lion’s den, I don’t hold out much hope for beating a top 4 Italian side over two legs.

We will start the home match without RvP and Nasri (banned), Diaby (injured, although that may be a blessing) and probably without Wilshere and Walcott; if Fabregas is still at the club he’s bound to be described as unfit. Think about what sort of team would be put out in the home leg and ask yourself where the goals and creativity will come from.

Maybe Arshavin and Rosicky will show their class (LOL), maybe Chamakh will find his scoring boots (LOL again) or maybe Super Nik B will still be around and show us what a top striker he really is (start clinging onto those straws). And then think about the second leg and how our defence, with its profusion of top notch left backs and dodgy centre backs (what does Squillaci actually do, apart from draw a salary?) and ask yourself – if by some miracle we have a lead to defend from the first leg, do you think we will do so?

I honestly don’t know who to blame really – the board and Mr Gazidis or the manager, but given the way in which the naïve board and CEO constantly back the manager and accept his every word as the gospel, I blame the manager for the predicament the team is in. Every player has been signed by the manager, and every contract has no doubt been approved by the manager. Who, by the way, said that giving Bendtner the no. 52 shirt was a good idea?

But back to the team and its problems: the manager has had all summer to address the Cesc and Nasri issues; he hasn’t. The idea that Cesc, if he ends up staying, can remain captain is risible and insulting to the past captains of the club. He hasn’t addressed the centre back problem, he hasn’t bought an out and out striker and he hasn’t bought experienced cover for or an alternative to Alex Song. Frimpong is way too raw, Coquelin and Eastmond (where are they by the way?) are too small and fragile.

Last week both this site and the venerable Myles Palmer said the club would sign three players, including two English centre backs. I doubted that would happen and I still do. I honestly believe that Wenger will do no more than buy one defender (and I wouldn’t be surprised if that was a left back rather than a centre back) and a replacement for Cesc/Nasri – even if they both leave, only one replacement will come in.

The squad was woefully exposed last year; this season will be worse. Come the end of the month I expect we will have a maximum of two points and be in the Europa Cup. And with no time at all to strengthen the squad. Will the AKBs be crowing come the end of August? You know what – I really hope they are, but I don’t believe they will be. Thursday night football anyone? On a personal level, I wouldn’t mind, because work commitments make Tuesdays and Wednesdays rather difficult. And we will be on Channel 4 or 5 which, as a non-Sky customer, suits me too. And just think of all those powerhouses of European football who will visit our great stadium. I can’t wait for the stadium announcer to tell us the crowd numbers.

Am I being too negative? I look forward to the comments and will finish by saying this – I hope every word of criticism and worry I have written here turns out to be wrong and misguided. My real fear is that I will be right.

Wow.. such little faith. Were you all crying and and yelling for Arsenes' head when he led the Invincibles to victory? He's the greatest manager alive and if he was given the same blank check that Chelsea, City and Man U get we would have many more league titles and even a CL title or two. Stay strong Gooners the pieces are all coming together!

Oh goody, we have purhcased another 'Lewis Hamilton' look alike. Could it be that Arsene is attempting to copy Fergie and have two players who look alike, to fool the opposition? (Rafeal brothers). Everyman and his dog knows where the team's weakness lies and yet he purchases yet another winger. I farking give up with the man, he is an utter plonker.

we are crying out for a centre back and wenger goes and buys a 17 year winger for a reported 12 million. this is the proof that the guy has completely lost the plot. the club is a shambles from the boardroom right down to the useless medical staff. europa league here we come.

@Merse-10 Actually I will be buying my Bolton Tickets on Wednesday even though I am not confident that we will do anything this year, and I have never booed the team even while all around me did so on the old North Bank when Blackburn beat us in October 2002. You are missing the point, which is that not just myself but many other supporters are feeling very apprehensive over this season.

One day the sky will fall on our heads, there will be a plague of locusts, Cornwall will sink into the sea, Norfolk will flood, Birmingham will become the cultural centre of the UK and a tornado will strike Cambridge. Moan moan moan. It's getting tiresome. With support like this there is no hope for us. Unbelievable. I've just read DC's post and it is spot on! Thank the lord for some sanity.

@ryanisagooner - rather than be undecided, just don't bother buying a ticket. I've got my ticket for Liverpool and Swansea and would prfer to have the stadium with fans hell bent on supporting the team rather than people who are moaning, negative and no dout booing after 15 minutes if we haven't scored. Watch it on the TV and you can moan all you want.

I wonder if the revenue lost by not being in Europe will be offset by the lack of signings? (No European Championship, no big name players or vice versa.....)

Well I don't think we'll make the top four this year so if it isn't Europa League it'll only be pushed back a year. Only thing is though that we've done quite well against Italian teams before and their clubs' qualities have seriously waned over the last few years.

Saw a film on Saturday where humans are wiped out (our own fault we didn't have a good defence and were more interested in profit then trophies) and Monkeys take over the world so probably not worth getting too stressed about Champions League. Proably a good idea if most Arsenal fans DO NOT go and see the film as they will probably get very depressed......

We can all see the scenario now 1 or 2pts after 3 league games out of the Champions League and on Aug 31st Cesc and Nasri are sold.No time to buy replacements. But some good news we have bought Campbell and Chamberpot and we will still have Eboue Bender Diaby Almunia and Vela at the club because no one is mug enough to buy them. And all this because Wenger was too stubborn to change

Holy ****, this article takes it to an all new low. Are you people incapable of any positivity whatsoever? I can imagine you all sat in a dark room with a pile of tabloids, rocking back and forth frothing at the mouth. P.S - What has Bendtner's shirt number got to do with anything?

Irrespective of who stays or leaves, who plays or does not, what we all look for is win some silverware this year - every year we've tried hard and failed consistently at EPL, FA Cup, Carling Cup & the Champions league. Should we add Europa to that list or be optimistic & hope Europa maybe a way of winning something !

Arsene has known about the Cesc/Nasri situation for more than 3 months but here we are 7 days before the season starts and nothing is resolved. How much time, energy and hot air has been spent by the club in trying to 'deal' with these players over the summer.Time and energy that should have been spent on bringing in new players and time and energy that should have been spent on the training pitch solving our defensive problems. The second half defensive display against Benfica showed once again we have learned absolutely frigg all about our failings in the last 6 years. But of course Arsene says because we are an offensive team we have to accept that our defence will make mistakes! That's either, arrogance, naivety, lack of professionalism or bad management because make no mistake a ruthless manager a la Ferguson would not accept the serial infantile mistakes made by players such Djourou,Fabianski,Almunia,Squillaci,Denilson,Bendnter,Clichy etc over the last 6 years.

Have the same fears myself, my beloved arsenal are falling deeper and deeper into decline while our manager and owners just sit there and suck their thumbs. What odds on Wenger getting the sack before August is out?

@ DC – How do you know that any prospective new manager will want more funds than we can afford? Why do you ask who we would have replace AW? How should we know, it’s not our job to scout a respective replacement. None of us had heard of Wenger before he was appointed. There would be plenty of replacements that would love the opportunity to manage Arsenal and might even bring in some new ideas as well as practising defence and implementing actual tactical change when things are not going our way.

Jeeeez are you guys serious?!?!? Udinese finished in the top 4 of the Italian league since then they have lost Zapata,Inlher and Sanchez their top players which probably puts them on a par with Celtic. So Europa league - don't be daft!! Pre season friendlies are that friendlies wait for a game that really matters and the likes of Frimpong and Lansbury will shove those pessimistic views right back in your faces.

  25. ryanisagooner

    Aug 08, 2011, 13:11 #10868

As the season gets ever closer I am getting even more pessimistic about our chances to mount a serious title challenge given the way we completely collapsed last year. We could have easily won it with points to spare last year but for some consistancy, as neither Utd or Chelski were at their best. Still not decided whether to buy tickets for my 1st game yet (Silver Member) as so despondant. I hope I am proved wrong!!

The manager should know that we fans are getting heart break because of his tightfisted, as a matter of fact he should buy players so that arsenal will not drop out of top four.

Is that Arsene has given up on the Champions League because Barcelona are too good and thinks we can win the Europa League and then he has his European trophy. Which in the last 6 years his obsession with the CL has gone from extreme to rediculous. Which has seen us lose out on 3 League Cup & 2 FA Cup and the winning mentallity and belief that could of seen us win at least 3 Premier League crowns and maybe, maybe we could of won a European Cup. Fergie knows the final 10% is mentallity and belief and treats every trophy as if it is the European Cup even if it is the League Cup. You look at the League Cup teams it always Youth mixed with the big names for the final. Saying that Italian teams are not that great and unless it's the two Milans we should not have too much trouble. Maybe we are all to blame believing the gospel and Wenger knows best and the grand vision instead of saying 'We need to play our best team against Chelsea (twice), Wigan or Tottenham and instead of saying we have bigger fish to fry and Barcelona is a much more important game like we did against Birmingham. It may not be the most important out of the four but at the end of the day it is a trophy. Maybe we are all to blame from Board, Manager, Players and Fans.

Its time for AW to go.He has lost his marbles that he is using Dein to endorse him( recent comments by dein). No proper incomings and no deadwood jettisoned. Will we still see the likes of eboue and almunia in an arsenal shirt?Im really pissed that fans at the emirates need to get on the nerves of everyone involved to make this departure happen.some people take a hint and change. Some need that to be clearly spelt for them. Some need to be thrown out.AW has come from the first category to the third within a few years.

The longer the summer goes on, the more unbelievable the Arsenal saga gets. I am clinging on to the slim hope that Wenger and Gazidis have some sort of a plan that they are about to pull off. However, our failure to shift the deadwood out of the club and get several high-earning poor/average players off the payroll may well have scuppered thier plan to bring in several new faces. Unless of course, Cesc or Nasri leave. Given that we knew some time ago that we have a really tricky start to the season it beggars belief that nothing seems to have been done to strengthen the squad or address or defensive failings. Never before have I felt so despondent about a new season starting!

    Aug 08, 2011, 11:33 #10839

If you believe anything Palmer says it underlines the poor quality of this article. We have no divine right to be in the Champions League year after year. It is because of AW that we are. One day perhaps you will understand just how good this man is – I say this as a man approaching his 60th birthday. Why do you presume you have the right to blame anybody? Because it is the internet age, that's why. We have absolutely no idea what goes on behind the scenes, which I am told is significant, but we do not have a sugar daddy bailing us out, or want to run the risk of having a mountain of debt. I do not want to see us become a mid-table mediocrity, which is what will happen if AW leaves. Any new manager will ask for more funds than we can afford and will turn us down. We will end up with a mid-table manager. Who would you have to replace AW? Don't know why I bothered to write really. I feel a flaming coming on!

Some very Solid points well made, all of which I seem to come up with in every argument I get in (daily) . However, I do want to wait until we are out of the Champs league , and have no more than 2 points by Sept 1st,. We'll probably qualify, beat Scousers and toon draw with Utd and paper over all the cracks only to fall away again mid March. I beyond caring about Cesc and more so NAsri , he gave us nothing since Feb anyway. At least Cesc does actually love the club and I dont blame us for holding out for a proper fee for him. Not his fault. Nasri though , greedy little FCUKER Piss off. Bit of a worry we are only looking at 1 c/half and not 2.

Europa cup here we come. And mark my words this is a thing no one has mentioned.RVP will put in a transfer request when that happens. And you the poor fans have already paid for your Europa league tickets on your ST.That 6.5% rise looks really good now doesnt it?
