Weng and “Sun Lounger”

What do they get up to at the training ground?

Is the chequebook coming out again after yet another woeful performance? It bloody well needs to because the fans who went Up North and got drenched, watched a performance even worse than the antics at Old Trollop. Will they be receiving a refund too?

So what went wrong this time? The starting eleven looked good on paper. Weng and “Sun Lounger” Rice were able to fill the team with seasoned professionals with various degrees of international experience. There were no places for Wally and Gibbs who were both dreadful in midweek. The Spanish Waiter, Ebouseless, Barry and Deckchair were nowhere near Ewood Park, and with Diabolical and Sick Note out injured again, there could be no blame attributed to utter incompetence. Surely our new back four should be able to withstand the occasional route one stuff from Robinson’s halfway line free kicks aiming for Samba’s head. Man for man, this was hardly a contest, with the opposition appearing as a bunch of journeymen now devoid of any of the remaining Fat Sam cloggers.

This team therefore had the ability to win this game at a canter. But yet again, it went so horribly wrong. And yet again, the defence was a complete and utter shambles every time they attacked. So if the team does appear to have the ability and still manages to leak in four ridiculous goals, then the blame must surely be down to Messrs Weng and Sun Lounger. What do they get up to on the training ground? Where is the management? Where is the coaching?

Let’s fast forward three months to a probability of us floundering around in mid-table, out of the Champions League and reduced to playing in the same competition as our neighbours on a Thursday night. There won’t be too many takers for seats. Of course, there is an answer. It’s high time that Sun Lounger was pensioned off. In his place please introduce Messrs Bould and Keown who know how to defend properly. And Mr Gazidis, please have a quiet word with Weng and let him know that his time at The Arse is quickly running out. You will have plenty of time to do that on Wednesday week because you will be sitting next to him all evening.

Like many who post here, i've followed Arsenal for 40 or so years. my opinions are not hasty, not ill- thought out, they are from within my Arsenal heart. Paul Merson got **** on here recently for talking from the heart. He was ***k**g dead right. Yes, he may have been a boyhood chavski fan, but he's Arsenal trust me! My point : In all my years of following Arsenal, this is the most gutless rudderless,dis-jointed team i've ever seen. My fury is reserved solely for the defence(euphemism). Arsenal have always had a defence. It's synonymous with our club. What do we have now? Bunglers, bottlejobs, clowns. It's a continuous farce, Wenger's inability and/or refusal to highlight a top centre back, purchase, nurture, and instill leadership is at the root of this crisis. Sol Campbell was the last decent CB we had! What a massive all-round managerial failing. The captain's armband has been given to players misguidedly. Thierry was never a captain, Fab neither. Pat Rice should've been put to stud 2/3 years ago, when the capitulations had already been ensuing for a couple of seasons. Whilst he Wenger has been putting pretty fairies on his chrissy tree the edifice has been shaking Adamant that tippy-tappy must succeed, hell-bent even, neglecting all else. Now we are stuck with the worst rearguard in living memory, and at the moment in the division. I shudder to think what messrs Hapgood, Bowen, Kelsey, Mcklintock, and Adams would have to say. I'm very Keeganesque angry right now and would demand heads! Time for a change, it's gone on too long, trust me....

Underpants - a number of reasons for the poor form over 20 games. A lack of leadership on the pitch, injuries, poor finishing, poor defending, wrong subs, wrong line ups, a disproportionate amount of officials decisions going against us. Take your pick as all have contributed. Wenger takes responsibility for the majority of those bit did look to solve it in the transfer window (albeit arguably very late and some might say, 'panic buying.') yet on this site we Santos written off after one game, mertesacker after three games and all whilst we are without our first choice CB partner for the German and our number one midfielder. I see some call for Cahill who has been as bad as any of our defenders this season so far. I'm not saying the manager is without fault but I'm trying to be positive and get behind the team.

How comes Pat Rice is being given equal responsibilty for the current crisis. Wenger is the team manager and the buck stops with him. in fact sacking Rice would only further emphasis the current failed philosphy. Also why the clamour for ex Arsenal players to be on the staff. What have they done as coaches to justify hiring them.

come on! the ref was a joke! offside missed, penalty missed. result? 4-3 to them instead of 4-3 to us. no one would object then. just like dortmund, when we should have lost but didnt. it'll all be fine when the new players have bedded in. Arsene knows what hes doing.

Yes yet another shambolic defensive performance. I'm afraid we are going to have live with our current defensive roster until January... Jagielka or Cahill anyone? Anyway in response to Ron: I think Mertesacker will improve, hopefully in time for the the Spurs game where he can have Defoe in his pocket just like he did at the World cup last year. The Spurs front man was replaced by Hesky after 71 minutes.

GoonerRon, So what are the 'excuses' - and excuses is all they are - for the other poor results over the past 20 games? Or indeed any number of shoddy performances from, in Wenger's own words: 'the best Arsenal squad ever'?

I do fear for Mertesacker when he faces a quick, true quality forward, even Defoe maybe in a couple of weeks could seriously show him up. Santos looks like hes wandering in a pea soup fog. I know he s new but, hes far from assured.Koschielny? Credit due. Hes clearly been in the gym to at least try and make himself look a little less wimpish but deary me, hes a chronic defender.

@ El Tel I realise Nelson was a left back 'cos I watched all his games. I don't doubt Rice is Arsenal through and through but I maintain he's had a lot of luck getting to where he is and he offers little when he got there. The blame for the current situation is fully Wenger's though. If he had a better no.2 he might not have got himself in such a situation.

Do you really believe it was a worse performance than at OT? That is utter garbage I'm afraid. Yes, we defended very poorly on Saturday but scored three goals, could have had seven. On another day their third is flagged for offside, we don't score two OG's and we get a penalty. I will repeat, we defended very poorly and some serious work needs to be done to rectify it and fast, but we were again on the rough side of some poor decisions.

Woeful defending,no fight,no heart,no leadership! Mertesacker is a joke&Santos hasnt a clue. Agree with Fozzy but will the board see sense and will there be change? Teams will relish playing against us as its so obvious we are there for the taking. Never thought i would see an Arsenal team like this. Wenger needs to go and i hope its very soon as i dont think he can save the season.

As a club we are overcome with loyalty to all our employees that wish to stay. Its great for the workers but it means they are not scared of being sacked or even dropped. Its led to this position where a shake up is so obviously needed but im afraid is so obviously not going to happen until Mr Wenger leaves. It's Arsene's club and Patrice is his loyal lieutenant so why would he change him!

I can't help but believe a glossary of your personally attributed "nicknames" would have helped make this article somewhat more readable, and just how did Gazizdis escape one? Despite that, your sentiment has credibility, even if our chances of taking part in the Europa Cup next year may be yet more wishful thinking.

What I find so unforgivable is that fact that our poor / shambolic defending is hardly headline news and has been apparent for ages. Yet messers Wenger and Rice seem incapable of sorting it out. For an 'old timer' like me it is doubly hard to take having grown up with Arsenal teams that may not have been pretty but at least could defend and us fans had confidence that a game would not be thrown away once we had our noses in front. I remember reading a comment Merson made about him seeing oppostion heads drop when Arsenal went 1 up as they knew how difficult we were to score against. Contrast that to the current Wenger led Arsenal!

AJ You know nothing mate, Nelson was a left back Ricea right back. Pat Rice was in the greatest ever Arsenal team. The 71 Double team. He is Arsenal through and through. Because things are tough at the moment try behaving like a true Arsenal fan and back the Team instead of a glory hunter like the Manc fans are. I also believe that Rice has never lost a match as Arsenal Manager. Check it out. For all those asking for Bould and Keown I must say I agree but the quick answer lies in the Don. Don Howe. The greatest coach of all time. Bring him in as an advisor to Wenger. Don is a great tactician and would help sort out this mess.

How long are gooners, even down here in Nairobi, gonna be the butt of jokes? Yet, the AKBs still persist with their blind faith in Wenger. The man is bereft of ideas, and has stayed too long in charge- just like Thatcher did. I wonder who will bother turning up to the Shrewsbury game after the bollocks that was on display in the 2nd half on saturday. We will be in a relegation fight with liverpool come May if both managers are still in their positions.

The defensive shambles continues. No apparant system in place when defending from open play,no organisation when defending freekicks and corners. Players who are cowards both physically and mentally who can't take responsibilty and just give the impression of 'it wasn't me guv it was the others'. No decision makers, no inspiring leaders, no one who really gives a toss about the club, despite all the PR coached weasel words mouthed on the official Arsenal website. But it's to late now, this situation has been festering for the last few season(Newcastle 4 Arsenal 4,Wigan3 Arsenal 2 etc etc etc etc)it won't end until Arsene accepts defensively he has failed miserably and that he has to adjust his his coaching methods and that many players he has bought in both from our youth policy and in the transfer market lack cojones or any feeling for our club, but that won't happen,so the s*** will continue to hit us as fans.

Rice has to be one of the luckiest guys going. He was a very average fullback who wasn't fit to lace Sammy Nelson's boots. He got to captain Arsenal under Terry Neil because he was a steady eddie who towed the line.He was given a job in the youth team as a pension by the club.George Graham had him nowhere near the first team. When Bruce Rioch got tinned he was given the caretaker role for 3 games and fell into Wenger's lap. He's been sitting on his knee ever since earning a fortune while Adams,Keown or Bould should have been coaching the first team. He's a yes man and that's how Wenger likes it.
