Things Can Only Get Better

And non-season ticket holders are in for a cheaper season!

Things Can Only Get Better

Eboue: Would we rather have him than Jenkinson now?

I feel that a lot of people have overreacted to the poor start to the season that we have made. Sure, we got humiliated at United, beaten by a poor Blackburn side and lost out again at WHL, but are we really as bad as people are currently making out, and should we even be surprised by the total of points we have amassed so far this season?

This summer, we lost the man who was our best player by a country mile, and I personally feel we are now only just waking up to how good Cesc really was for us over the past five seasons or so. The guy held us up above many mediocre sides, and, when he wasn’t in the team, we struggled. After he left, we were simply always going to struggle to find anything like a replacement, and the job that players like Ramsey and Arteta have on their hands is quite simply mission impossible. Add to that the loss of Mr Moneybags Nasri, who did manage to score a bucket-load of goals at the beginning of last season, and you can see how and why we currently have only seven points from seven games.

The player turnover at our club during the close season was massive, and possibly too big to keep any sense of cohesion going amongst the players that remain. Players like Eboué, Clichy, Bendtner and co. were certainly no world beaters, but were they really any worse than what we have now brought in? For example, Eboué was hailed as a clown-type figure, but was he really any less solid at the back than Carl Jenkinson has looked so far? Was NB52 any worse than Chamakh? For me, the answer has to be a no.

The only worthwhile signings we have managed to muster so far in response to the mass exodus of the summer have been Mertesacker and Oxlade-Chamberlain, and one of them is only 18-years-old and totally unproven at the top end of the game. The criticism of Mertesacker has been embarrassing, as he is a proven international-class centre-half for one of the top teams in international football. Sure, he was always going to take a little time to adjust to the English, game but give him a chance before you write him off as another Pascal Cygan, for Ch***t’s sake.

To all the people currently talking up some kind of relegation battle, you should feel ashamed to call yourself Arsenal fans, as this will quite simply never happen. We will finish safely inside the top six; of that you can be sure. Let us be honest: you don’t have to that good to finish sixth in this league anyway. Are we really any worse than teams like Villa or Everton? I don’t think so, and don’t yet rule us out of the top four either, as Spurs and Liverpool are no world-beaters either. In my eyes, we were pretty unlucky to lose at WHL last week and, when we got done 2-0 at home to Liverpool, it was a very even contest before Frimpong managed to get himself sent off, so don’t give up on chasing them down too soon.

The most embarrassing aspect of the Spurs game for me as an Arsenal supporter was the shameful abuse that some of our away-contingent dished out to Adebayor and the Togo national side in general. I feel we should remember that, at the end of the day, it is simply a game that we are watching, and not life or death. When we as supporters start to use someone’s death as a song to goad someone we simply do not like, that is going way too far for me, and anyone getting a life ban should consider himself lucky to escape so lightly.

In times of need, we should try to take the positives out of any bad situation and there are some positives for sure from Arsenal performing badly. When Arsenal are doing well in the League, I then feel the need to watch other top teams play when they are being televised, in the hope that they will slip up and drop some points. This means you end up watching a lot more football on TV when Arsenal are doing well. The reverse of this is the current situation. We are nowhere near the top of the table right now, and - being realistic - we won’t be for the remainder of the season. This means we get more freedom from the footie on the TV, as who cares about Liverpool v Man United when you are 12 points behind after seven games? The other weekend, I was away in Hove and I strolled by a pub showing the Arsenal – Bolton game and, instead of dashing into the dark and smelly bar and being glued to some cruddy TV screen for the next 90 minutes, I simply walked past and went off and did something else instead. This gives you more of a life, I feel.

Also, when you are down towards the bottom half of the table, you are certainly going to be less inclined to go to games in person and pay the inflated ticket prices that our club likes to charge us for the honour of attending The Grove in person. This saves you a lot of dough over a full season. I would have normally gone to maybe 10 or so games each season, but now I doubt I will make the effort more than four times this current campaign. When I factor in travel expenses and food etc, this will save me around £600 per annum, plus I cancelled my Sky subscription last season saving another £600 a year. That is £1,200 this year alone that I will save, simply because Arsenal are playing sh**e.

I sit here now and think about what I am going to do with all that money I will save in the coming months. Who knows? Maybe next season, I will get my season-ticket back?

Yes, we really are as bad as people are currently making out. And, absolutely everyone, except me it seems, is surprised by the total of points we have amassed so far this season - frankly, I'm surprised we've got that many given our 5 years of gross under investment in the playing staff. And now, having been disgraced at Old Trafford(and never, never forget that - an absolute disgrace it was), that we then went out and quickly bought more players than I've got fingers?. And to be straight with you, none of them look very convincing, with perhaps the exception of AOC (typically a Wenger special - the young one!). I don't really like the tone of your post, but continually paying through the nose for years on end to watch a shorne up team of also rans is indeed very frustrating, and I can well see how many will drift away from the Arsenal and indeed football in the coming couple of seasons. I first went in the 1978 season and my dad 1958, we've both seen a lot worse than this. However it pans out in the coming days, the giant will only sleep for so long - now win our next 5 EPL games and we'll back in the top 4 (and you probably wont walk passed the pub anymore when we are playing!).

got nothing to do with the formation, defending or goals conceeded its because fab has left. Now i understand why we are in a FALSE position in the league.Top six, no top four I hear you say, gazidis himself has already conceeded these positions, i dont think he needed a crystal ball or Glen Hoddles psychic side kick to see that one. Oh and by the way the dark terrace humour of the chanting is simply to yank the opponents chain, didnt you know? so dont take it to heart, i'm guessing now but you dont go ''away'' very often.

The Hampshire Gooner- Of course Tottenham fans create a decent atmosphere when they're playing us- it's their cup final, and decades of inferiority have create a huge amount of bitterness and hate. Try going to a lesser game at s***e hart lane, Tottenham fans I know tell me in their more honest moments that it's no better than the grove.

Any club has some bad eggs amongst their support of that you can be sure. I have been to WHL on a number of occassions as an Arsenal supporter and have to say the support they give their team is not that bad at all inside the stadium which kind of goes hand in hand with having a few issues for away fans outside the ground. I wish our stadium was more like that, I feel we would gain more home points each season if it was more of an intimidating place for away teams to visit.

Regarding the Adebayor chant at WHL and Harry having a go at our fans, did the scum not abuse Ade when he played for RM last year? Double standards I think.

Hampshire Gooner - Clubs ripping off fans is not just applicable to Arsenal, sadly it is endemic throughout the game and worsens the higher up the league structure you go. This is modern day football - a victim of its own popularity and far reaching appeal. The chants at WHL were not “taking the Pi** out of the people who were shot on the bus”, it was vitriolic abuse aimed solely at Adebayor. Whether you condone that abuse or not, it wasn’t aimed at those that lost their lives. It is true that the Spurs fans did respect the death of Rocky (very much to their credit) but if you’ve ever experienced the ‘WHL match day experience’ even when they are not playing Arsenal, you will know what a hate-ridden, vile bunch some amongst them are.

The point of the article is that there is a **** bonus while the team is doing badly - we can all save lots of time and money apparently by not watching them. And instead go and watch say Barnet. Maybe not Barnet. But devastating insight all the same.Well spotted Hampshire Gooner

DW Thomas - You mentioned a thing about 'class' and 'Arsenal' but what genuine class is there these days when our own club rips us off year after year, alienating many of the 'true gooners' and then the ones that are left stoop so low that they try and take the pi** out of people that got shot on a bus and died? We Arsenal fans like to portray Spurs fans as morons but I do remember them respecting the death of Rocky a few years back rather well when our next match after his death was at home to them. Neanderthals?

Can't agree with much at all here. I would rather have AOC, Per, Arteta, Park, Santos, and Gerv. than Bendtner or Eboue any day of the week. And, I like even Jenkinson better than our former Ivorian clown. It is players like Bendtner, with an inflated ego and never living up to their or Wenger's view of themselves, that brought this team to its knees this season after years of not living up to their own hype. In my day, if you weren't starting, you worked harder and proved yourself with the chances you got. This is much more difficult in my opinion than being a week to week starter. Yet, talent will always show itself eventually. I wish I could live in London and have the choice of not renewing my season ticket. I would never give it up, no matter how bad the team does. I am the complete opposite to this poster's current attitude. I find I want to watch the team more now hoping they will string together some good performances than any of the past 5 or 6 seasons. And I try to never miss a game. Ever. It is never right to bash even a former disgraceful money-hungry mercenary like Adebayor with chants about the Togo tragedy. Yet, his salary should compensate him for any stick he gets from our away fans. He too could have stuck it out and won something for Arsenal. $$ signs were more important. I too watch a lot of other teams, especially classic match-ups like this weekends Liverpool vs. Man United. There is so much history there. That is why many of us love the Arsenal--our history. Not just football, but the class our team has shown over the years and the traditions we have made. I would gladly fork over the money to have a seat at the Grove each home game. But I might be one of those chanting things like "Wenger Out" or "Spend some f...ing money!" It is time for the majority to start making their feelings known week in week out. No more excuses!

You have some nerve having ago at us away fans at WHL, the same fans who supported our team to the very bitter end this season at OT, and the very same fans who had to stand and watch that lazy **** run the length of the pitch towards us at Citeh the other year. Your not an Arsenal supporter you don't know the meaning of the word. You can do us all a favour and spend your 'saved up' money elsewhere - how about Chelski it must be slightly cheaper for you to get to and their a winning team (at the moment)

You cited arsenal playing bad as a positive because you watch less football and spend less money doing so. I would rather spend the money then spend week after week depressed about unsatisfactory performances. I dont know how you can call yourself an arsenal fan and this article is a prime example of how low our club had sunk this season.

Hampshire Gooner - your last post basically questions why people bother habitually supporting a football club, not just Arsenal. Let's face it, we're much luckier than fans of many, many other clubs, some of whom have NEVER seen their club win a trophy. Yet they turn up week after week and probably moan. So why do people bother? What is the point? It's a valid question. Just not one someone who claims to be a football fan of any club would ever ask. Let alone one masquerading as a 'Gooner'. Once it's under your skin it's there for life. Unequivocally. No questions asked. If you think that makes proper fans sad, then fair enough and good luck with your latest money-saving lifestyle choice/hobby. More edifying persuits await you I'm sure.

The Hampshire Gooner - I don't remember questioning the fact that an intimidating home atmosphere generates points, so I'm not sure why you mention it. Especially as I'm continually making the point that opposing sides/fans don't have any fear coming to the grove. It's so neutral. Our 'home advantage' seems to count for little and I'd blame that on half-hearted supporters who arrive late, leave early, sit on their hands and only make a noise when it's to complain. There are so many genuine Gooners who have been sidelined for whatever reason. I'd gladly have them back in over the deserters who can't stick around if it's not looking like we'll win a trophy. You say 'I may well come back if...' Very decent of you to deign to join us. Incredible. You call yourself a 'Gooner' yet pick and choose when to support Arsenal. It doesn't work like that. None of us are pleased at what's happening. It hurts big time. All of us agree certain things need a shake up. It's not about supporting Wenger. It's not about supporting the board. It's not about supporting players you recognise aren't good enough or are greedy mercenaries. It's about supporting The Arsenal. As i say, it's unconditional. I have mates who are Leeds fans and saw their club drop 2 divisions. Did their turn their back on the club? No chance. even though they despised what certain people had done to it. If someone (ie. most of us) struggles to justify it financially - fair enough. That's not the same as completely blanking a match that's on in a pub. Those aren't the actions of a fan. P.S. I don't see the relevance of the Islington/Man U point.

What would it take for some people to stop going to matches then these days? It does kind of seem to me that it is the same people who moan endlessly about how poor we have become as a club that simply can't seem to kick the 'habit' of attending matches in the flesh on an almost weekly basis. Is the experience of attending in the flesh at the Arsenal that exhilirating these days or are these habitual followers simply the kind of people who have little else to do with their spare time on a saturday afternoon? If you stopped and questioned why you feel the need to attend every week might you realise that if you did stop you might not actually feel the need to rush straight back? Just a thought

Look on the bright side if all the glory supporters have the same attitude then it means the real fans will be able to buy tickets and we might get a better atmoshpere at games. David - Smack on re Nasri. An average performer at best. A consistent bottler nontheless. He d hide when the boots started flying every time. Disliked him since 2 years ago away at Sunderland when Loric Cana was dishing it out. Nasri was the first to 'retire' to the fringes of the game, closely followed by Rosicky leaving Cesc to take him on alone. Cowardly that he is. Never rated him. 4-5 months of consistency in 3 years. Great business flogging him for that price.

Rocky RIP - I have been to WHL on a number of occassions and I have to say the atmosphere there does seem to be a lot better than what we seem to generate with nearly twice as many fans inside our stadium on match days. You can say what you want about an 'intimidating atmosphere' but does that not generate more home points gained at the end of every season? The geenral point I was trying to make in this article is for the club to wake up and smell the coffee before it is all too late and fans stay away in there thoushands for some time to come. I took a season off from owning a season ticket this time round but I may well come back when the current regime is shacken up a little bit. Cut the dross and let the good times roll again that is what I say. PS I used to live in Islington so save that kind of banter for the United fans who have never attended OT and always have lived in Suffolk.

So relegation will "simply never happen"? I hope not too, but the bookmakers are beginning to show signs of disagreeing with you, Mr Fairweather Supporter. William Hill odds down from 500-1 to 100-1 in 7 games. So they too are starting to change their minds...

To recap then: you'll only bother watching Arsenal when they are doing well. Otherwise it's a waste of time. Is that the essence of it all? I cannot believe you had the temerity to admit to not bothering to watch us play Bolton. You took the time to put this in an article. I'd love to be as carefree about it all as you are, but all genuine Gooners who've got Arsenal in their blood will find your attitude sickening. Love for Arsenal is unconditional and often painful. We are all hurting badly, but walking away isn't an option. Part-time fans have snaffled up tickets during the good times, leaving diehard fans on the margins. (No more so than the CL final.)Time for the plastics to drift away and go for a stroll and let the real fans reclaim our club. I trust you've not endured the delights of a trip to WHL snd the abuse we have to endure which never gets reported? People being attacked indiscriminately by bullies who thrive on outnumbering people. Appalling chants going back 10-15 years. Yet you dig your own out now that we have overstepped the mark. I'm not condoning what our fans sang for one minute, no way, but anyone who has been to that cesspit would be a little slower to condemn our fans.

Eboue was a cheat and an embarassment to the Club, in that regard, Jenkinson is a definate improvement. Ability-wise, Eboue has 10 years worth of footballing experience at the highest level on Jenkinson. Jenkinson will be better judged further down the line in his development. Fabregas was irreplacable, so Arteta/Ramsey can never deliver what Faregas was capable of. In my opinion, Arsene done great business on Nasri. He got £20+ million for a guy of 'ok' ability who wanted to leave. Make no mistake, Nasri simply cannot compare to the likes of Pires, Overmars, Merson, Limpar before him. Adebayor has become very rich off the backs of supporters who have a deep emotional bond to their club. I'm of the opinion that he must accept the vitriolic backlash his conduct generates.

Everyone is feeling the pinch right now, and this will impact on some people's ability to go to games. This is fair enough and I certainly wont judge people who have to think twice about going for this reason. You, however, are thinking twice due to "Arsenal playing sh**e", which is quite frankly a disgusting way to support a football club. Fair weather supporters have no place here.

Loyal since 80 - i reckon your post gets it pretty much in a nutshell. Arsenal have been synonymous with AW for too long, like hes some sort of guru rather than just a Coach. I suppose hes fostered it himself to an extent, but it sure makes for often what seems like an anti Arsenal media agenda. Youre quite right, its the Club we support, not its employees.

Our away support is magnificent & a credit to the club the recent support at Man Utd already seems forgotten by some.No excuses for some of the chants at the lane from BOTH sets of supporters. For matters on the pitch 16 goals conceded in 7 games & our best player imo has been the keeper worrying.IG & the board should be proud of themselves transfer profit in the summer(again)& wage bill reduced so targets met.For fans like myself interesting to see as a non season ticket holder that i don't now need to rush to buy a ticket two months in advance still tickets available for sunday.IG will be happy the sky fee will cover the unsold seats feel sorry for the Sunderland fans as the game has only recently been changed still who ever cared about them.

I am not sure what point you are trying to make hear. Presumably looking for some positives in what is a very low point for Arsenal. Well for me there are very few. The fact that I care so little for my club now after 45 years or so of support makes me sad, not happy and it is about time us Gooners did start to react to how poorly our club is being run. Poorly as in football, not financially - because I support the football club not the business.

I am glad you will only be attending 4 games this season because we are not playing well at the moment, infact, take my advice and don't attend any games at all. Let me guess, those four games you will be attending will they be Man U, Chelsea, Man City and Spurs? also add to that if we get through the group stages of the Champions league and we play a top side like, RM, Barca, you will attend those games as well. Your no supporter, win lose or draw, I support the team, I DO NOT SUPPORT ARSENE WENGER, I support ARSENAL. With your saved money this season, why don't you spend your saturday afternoon with your partner shopping. Also, when we come good again, this season, next season, the season after that, don't bother coming back, we don't need you. Get yourself a season ticket at Southampton, you slag!

Agree that some of the players who left this summer are better than some of the replacements. As for life bans for singing songs about Abebayor, you're having a laugh. Funny how Twitch was saying the chants were the worst thing he's ever heard, when the Sp*r fan were singing far worse last session when Abebayor played for Real (& not forgetting their Pedo songs to Wenger and Big Sol), total over reaction. You should get a ban for attending less games because we're not doing so well (Glory & plastic spring to mind)

IOccasionally an article can make you ponder the sobriety of the writer. You ask, “are we really as bad as people are currently making out?”, and “are we really any worse than teams like Villa or Everton?” I just know you already know the answers to those questions. As for a relegation battle, you state, “this will quite simply never happen”. In which case you forget the 92/93 season when for long periods we were languishing in the final third before finally finishing only 7 points off a relegation position in 10th place. Then you say, “we will finish safely inside the top six” followed by, “don’t yet rule us out of the top four either” But later in your piece you state, “we are nowhere near the top of the table right now, and - being realistic - we won’t be for the remainder of the season”. Clearly, confusion reigns…

Would you rather have Eboue or Jenkinson?,Would you rather have Bender or Chamakh? the answer is simple we dont want any of them they are all ****e.Thats the problem with Wenger he ships out average players and brings in the same.Jenkinson is no better or worse than Eboue.Jenkinson was playing non league football a year ago that tells you how bad Eboue was.The question should be would you want Nasri or Gervinho? That is a no brainer

Some good points. I persoanlly think that the whole teams style and tactical set up was far too much geared towards what Fab s wanted (or parhaps what Wenger thought he wanted more to the point), good as he was. When hes been out of the frame, the team has been haphazard and rudderless for quite some years largely as a result of having no suitable, complementary midfielders to play with him. Wenger let him down. Poor and short sighted planning and team building on the boss's part. We re now seeing the fall out from it. We re not too bad a side though as you say, just a million miles away from chasing for titles now. It sounds perverse, but im quite enjoying the struggle. The false hopes and overly grand expectations ( we ve all had them) of previous Seasons are no more. Its more 'honest' now and humble. Some of the 'fans' we ve attracted in recent years have needed a humbling experience for some time. Theyll learn how to be supporters now instead of 'Sky' tele induced followers. If not, theyll dissapear back to where they were pre 2006. The Club and Wenger are deserving of much criticism and ill dish it out like anybody else. The Club's still there though and will survive all this prevailing gloom and rise again, im sure.We always do.

A revealing exchange in the online Mail today between Martin Keown and Dennis Bergkamp at the Ajax training ground.Martin: ''Dennis,if you'd been on Mars for the last two years, you'd never have believed what had happened to Arsenal would you?'' Pretty much confines this article by The Hampshire Gooner to the dustbin.

Jenkinson will be a good right back for us, he does'nt hide, even during the mauling at old trafford he still had a real go and from what i have seen so far he is a better crosser of the ball that sagner, he is'nt better yet but Sagna's biggest weakness is the fact he can't cross a road, as for rather having Eboue, no thanks, i thought he should have been sacked a few seasons back for the kick on Modric away at the lane, he was a clown figure because he was a clown, his diving was a disgrace to the club, i think young Carl Jenkinson is actually one of the plus points of Wenger's signinings. Top six? on what evidence so far are you basing this???the only game i have witnessed and thought we played well there was Udinese away, even the first half against Bolton we were dire. As for you saving a few quid, good on you mate but i don't really care!!!!

Over reacted to our start to the season? Really? After the club from the manager upwards made us a laughing stock with our transfer dealings, when we rushed in 5 signings on the last day of the transfer window ,like a bunch of Del Boy duckers and divers? When the manager after being 3-1 down at Old Trafford decided to take a 'gamble'and go on all out attack with a seriously weakened team and ended up being mullered 8-2 like a Sunday Morning team? When after the same defensive problems we have suffered for 5 years re appear with knobs on against the mighty Blackburn? When the writer of this piece says we will finish comfortably in the top six ,as if that's fine, then we know that many fans are as one with the board. True success of a big club,Premiership and Champions League is not sought after at Arsenal with the ruthlessness of a United,Barca, real etc and this article sums up perfectly the attitude of many fans of being happy with a 'reasonably succesful club'. But cojones to that ,I want Arsenal to join the elite clubs. We were once the most famous club in the world .That's what we should be aiming for. Indidentally will someone please tell Chesney and Wilshire and the others to keep their traps shut. They are in the flipping papers and the club website everday giving us the benefit of their wisdom. When they have won trophies for Arsenal and actually achieved success then they will be worth listening to,at the moment they have achieved sod all for the club.

Well said on the Adebayor abuse - it was abhorrent, and I was shocked given the "class" I have normally witnessed when travelling. As to the rest - the term "plastic" will probably be used by others on this forum. If you are not that bothered, then why are you even writing? Are you really that fair weather that 8 months of disaster gets you away from the game? If you can't be bothered to watch, please spare us your commentary. Even though it probably isn't any more ill-informed than most of the stuff on Online Gooner. I can only assume that there is some deeper irony here that I am missing.

You should be the one who is ashamed. You are the worst type of glory hunter and it's people like you who are the problem in football nowadays. Why not support your local team instead!

Well you are clearly a nice easy going totally non- ambitious guy from the countryside and good luck to you. youre clearly not a winner and you dont mind supporting a club that has totally lost its winning sport mentality and replaced it with financial prudence is all that matters. in the end it will come down to how many Arsenal fans will demand that their club try to be winners again and if they can influence anything. I want us to be winners again and i prey that I am in the majority

Well thank you for your comments from your safe haven of Hampshire - it's much easier to ignore Arsenal from where you are as I'm sure it's easy to put your fingers in your ears and wear a blindfold and pretend we're not where we are in the league. But you know what? we are. The league table doesn't lie. We're like a ship with a hole in the bottom with a captain that doesn't want to acknowledge it and pretend everything is okay. But it isn't. We have to sort this defensive mess out and I don't care what we have to do - even if it means sending all our defenders to Siberia, waking up at four in the morning and getting them to practice defending corners and second balls for a week without a break - play the reserves, if need be, we'll make the points up when we get a back four worthy of George Graham. Us North London Gooners were hurt by the loss against Spurs, not least because they now seem to frequent Arsenal pubs. But what I love about North London Gooners more than anything is win, lose or draw, the day after a North London derby, we'll still wear our colours - were you?
