Almunia: Our very own Freddie Kruger?

It's not often, especially this season, that Gooners get to watch Arsenal without the proverbial white-knuckle ride. However, Tuesday night was almost the exception. In truth it didn't tell us much that we didn't already know, such as that in Miquel, Frimpong, Coquelin (sans the writhing around comically after a challenge in the first half) and Chamberlain, we have a promising group of players, who may be able to make the step-up if given time. On the other hand, this is almost a direct dichotomy from other players at the club who no longer seem to be motivated to perform their tasks, such as Arshavin, Chamakh, Fabianski and Mannone. The horror of losing two goalkeepers in one game means that, somehow, Almunia could "force" his way back into the side. It made me think of those ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ movies from the 80s, where, just when you think that Freddy Kruger has gone, he suddenly appears from nowhere.

Anyway, considering we were written off at the group qualification stages, it was comfortable to watch Chelsea, City and United squirm and in the case of the latter two fail to get to the knock-out stages. Better was the finish to our group, where, much like during the rest of 2011, the Germans decided not to do the Greeks a favour and Marseille slipped through the back door. Any preferences as to whom we would like in the knock-out stages? I should prefer to avoid Napoli, and possibly Milan, but remain optimistic that a favourable draw will give us a chance of reaching the quarters at least.

The injury curse continues. Even more strange, it seems that Santos wasn't even supposed to go to Greece until Pat Rice discovered that Martin Angha didn't qualify for the work permit to travel! He joins Jenkinson, Sagna and the perma-crocked Gibbs. Worryingly, Wenger believed that he would be off for quite a while, which leaves us short on the left. Unbelievably, we could actually be playing all four centre-backs at the weekend, assuming Djourou and Vermaelen play in the right- and left-back positions respectively, with Mertesacker and Koscielny in the middle. The main concern is that another injury will put us on the verge of our usual New-Year defensive crisis - has anyone got Sol Campbell's number?

Nice to see that we are putting up three statues to commemorate the 125th anniversary. Absolutely no problem with the choices of Chapman, Adams and Henry. Not only is this a great gesture, especially as two of the three are still involved with football, but it adds some impetus to the rest of the players, present and future, to aspire to their standards.

Saturday sees a tricky home game against Everton, who have the knack of producing the goods against the better sides in the EPL. Following our home draw at Fulham, dropping further points before Christmas isn't something that I have included in my letter to Santa. However, the following week sees the biggest challenge since that 8-2, which is a visit to the Eastlands, on which I will comment next week when, hopefully, we will not have any further injuries, as we will need our strongest squad possible.

@ Tony Evans - yup, nobody's saying Wenger's a Saint but I'm sure this week's results cast shadows over a few managers as well. Imagine if Arsenal had lost to Basel and not made it through a group with Otelel Gulati (or whatever that club's called)? Signing players 9the right player) isnt as easy as folks on here would like us to believe. I remember what people were saying on here about RVP in previous seasons when he's been as crocked as Diaby, and now he's a hero! A little bit of retrospect, consistency and common-sense appears to be missing on here. But your comments are usually quite logical and I do accept most of your points

Charlie D. Nothing ''heady'' about blowing Titles, domestic and European trophies...Wenger has ''blown'' too often both here and abroad yet is allowed to carry on his merry way.

Ronster in 1999 we should have won the double we finished 2nd by 1pt, remember DB10's last minute penalty miss v Utd in the semi final.2000 a Eufa cup final,2001 cup final when we pissed over Liverpool.Compared to now yes they were heady days

Ronster - we were competing right to the very, very end in those seasons. Not until Feb or March. There's the difference.

Tony Evans. With all due respect there was nothing ''heady'' about the late springs of 1999,2000 and 2001.

Please no return of Almunia. He has absolutely no hunger left. OK Vito had a howler moment not realising he was back in his box - but the bigger issue with that goal was that Djourou inexplicably stopped his run back to the line while his keeper was still committed on the edge of the box. If he had followed rule 1 of what a centre back should do when the goalie is committed forward he would have easily stopped that goal. I'd sooner see Mannone or even Shea on the bench hungry to get the chance to impress rather than a sulking Almunia. On the defense side - another soft tissue injury - something has got to be done about the training regime to reduce these. One or two seasons where we have "bad luck" I can believe - but given that it's every year suggests (to put it mildly) that we are training in weakness.

CanadaGooner - I know what you are trying to say is almost right in that most football fans are natural pessimists when it comes to their team. I certainly am I admit and as long as I can remember, apart from the heady days of 1998-2004, I have found something to moan about at Arsenal. I agree with you that Wenger in many ways does a great job in keeping Arsenal up in the top four but surely you would concede that some of the decisions he makes are baffling and worthy of criticism? We do have players on fat contracts that should have never been signed, never mind feted by Wenger and we do have little or no decent back up strikers or keepers. Why does he wait until the 11th hour to sign players and why does he continually tell us that the squad is good enough to cope with injuries when we all know that it is not. Perhaps we want too much now and I can blame Wenger for that too because of all the great success we had in his early years! Before that the odd title and cup once in a blue moon was all I expected.

How dare any of you question my personal deity, ok it may be 6 years and counting since our last trophy and 8-2 was a tad embarassing but I tell all you heretics and non-believers AW has a cunning plan and another 5 year plan up his sleeve

My expectations have dropped.I now go into the season hoping we finish 4th nothing better.I dont expect us to ever win another trophy.I expect us to sell our best players every summer. And that to put it midly is an absolute disgrace and it is all down to Wenger. No team should be happy to accept finishing 4th every year. This year has seen some of the biggest lows in my 36 years as a Gooner.Never did i think i would see the day when an Arsenal team conceded eight in a game let alone lose a 4 goal lead in the last 18 minutes of a game. But Wenger is still there. Why? because Kroenke Gazidis and Wenger are happy just to finish 4th.Only when these three go will we ever win something again. This season is no different from the previous 6 in fact its worse

We had a semi clearout of the deadwood last summer.Eboue gone but some fans still forget Denilson and Bendtner are STILL Arsenal players. We still have plenty of deadwood at the club. The Three Stooges otherwise known as our back up keepers,Squillaci,Djourou,Crock Diaby,Rosicknote,Chamakh and Park should be out the door. All not good enough and taking huge wages out the club(thanks Arsene).

Wenger must believe he is the king of football. Why else does he say the things he says and does the things he does? You too would probably have an titanic ego if you coached an Invincible side. But, in the world of pro football, you're only as good as your last trophy. No one denies we are a top club with a rich history. We critics only want that glory of the past to return. And it's not too much too ask as the light is visible at the end of the tunnel. If only Wenger would complete this team with the depth he so obviously needs. We can all see it. Even the deluded fans with blinders on who see only the great Arsene who does no wrong deep down really know the team needs better players and a plan B when necessary. When one man's ego and ideals steal everyone else's joy of winning a trophy, it could be time to replace that man. He has promised us for the last 6 seasons and to no avail. I for one am tired and have little patience left. His utterances leave me baffled. His analysis of many games (especially losses) boggles the mind. I always think he is playing mind games about transfers, but not anymore. He really won't buy will he? How can he not, I say. He must know this team is not there yet and is only a few players away from real quality. And stop talking about everyone wanting to see Real and Barca play. I want to see Arsenal play and beat the best to win a trophy. Let's hear him talk about that! With conviction and determined action. Do something Arsene to strengthen this team. It is your duty! It is your well paid job!

wow after reading these comments its hard to believe that we are not in the same dire situation we were in back in September. I for one will remember that we really could still be floundering around in the bottom third of the table and could well have even struggled to finish third in our c/l group and so on that basis remembering what was posted on this site around that time I no longer expect arsenal to do anything spectacular , results and performances that we would have come to expect from previous better arsenal sides.no not for me chaps nothing major is going to change during this season at any level within the club so i will celebrate and really enjoy any victory we get because having seen the nightmare start I think I will take what we have and savour until the necessary changes can occur at the seasons end.

The only interesting thing about this thread is it was started the day after united and city got knocked out and is even more doom and gloomy than it! The champions league is a tough competition, if you don't take chances, don't give it 100% and make silly errors you lose and we lots but unlike united, it didn't matter, end of. So who would we rather be right now? Spurs, United, City, Chelsea, the goddamn dippers? There's always plenty to fret and moan about but this week surely is a good week?

CanadaGooner, wouldn't it be nice if your theory had a chance to be proved correct i.e. Wenger actually won us a trophy, then we could see if he was still slagged off, as you suggest. Trouble is it won't, will it?

Tony you are spot on mate&as for you CanadaGooner sometimes you have to recognise that when mistakes are repeated there is something fundamentaly wrong. To not see where the team needs strenghtening is a flaw in AW,s management. I want the team to be successful but bringing in average players in a last minute panic will not achieve success.

Canada Gooner- Calm down mate, it could be worse, you could have spent £1,075 in May like me in the vain hope that Wenger wouldn't f**k up another transfer window. Anyway, ignore all these nasty people, I'm sure we'll be hearing from your alter ego Mandy Dodd soon enough.

Wenger is going through his usual pre transfer routine professing strenght when only weakness exists. We cannot have a situation where Alumunia is our back up keeper. We should not have a situation where Chamakah is our back up striker. The squad still needs a major overhaul will all of the rubbish ( at least 5 players but could be as many as 10) being either sold or given free transfers. Will it happen not a chance and yet again we will not win a thing and the ticket prices will increase in May to pay for more inadequate players. Get rid of Wenger now.

Gooner Pete what do we want?we want a manager who signs players in july not deadline day after an 8-2 defeat. We want him to sign a back up keeper who doesnt wear a green curly wig,a big red nose and size 20 shoes and drives a tiny car that falls apart. We want him to sign a back up striker for RVP.And if we finish outside the top 4 we want him to resign.Thats what we want

Well with all three GK out of contract in the summer we will see some movement on that front. It could have been different as Fabianski was offered contract negotiations which thankfully he declined.Lets hope experienced back up is brought in.The squad players at Arsenal are on massive contracts that is the problem we have moving them on Squillaci still has another year left after this season & a loan is looking the only option at present.AA as well we are looking to move on regardless of what is being reported.Rosicky is out of contract in the summer i can't see him being offered new terms. It seems we will have another turnover of players in the summer Bendtner still on the books Denilson also on their wages getting a permanent club to pay a fee as well is the stumbling block there. Finally i want to add about Diaby it is getting to the stage where surgery on his ankle just hasn't worked he has had several operations & it's getting close to where do we go from here which isn't nice to hear regardless of what fans think of him.

here we go again! always so quick to be negative. I like the new 'consistent' saying on this site after a volley of venom: "i hope Wenger proves me wrong and ...." oh yeah? You hope he proves you wrong?? How is he going to do that? he won 3 premier league titles and several FA cups and has done things that 18 of the 20 clubs in the premier league season in, season out, wish they could have and we still call him an idiot and say he's no good. SO, TELL ME: HOW IS WENGER GOING TO PROVE any of you negative folks wrong? we are a club that has never won back to back premiership titles, we have never won the champions league (and havent got a history in Europe like liverpool or man utd), we've never done the treble - so, hey - IT'S ALL WENGER'S FAULT? OH, WHAT A BAD MANAGER WENGER IS!? Some of the comments I read on here simply sickens me - you all have a quick solution, a quick answer to every wrong move wenger has made, and you will remain negative no matter where Arsenal end up this season, if he wins the FA cup you'll say the league was what you wanted - if he wins the league and FA Cup you'll say he's useless and has never won the champions league. if he wins all 4 trophies (plus the carling cup we're already out of), you'll say he's an idiot because he had too many foreigners in the side and how can he do it again next year if the foreign players move back home. If he wins every trophy in the land you'll say the emirates is a small stadium and he's an idiot and has to build a bigger stadium! If he goes next season unbeaten you'll say we've seen that before and he's an idiot because he's not english! THERE WILL ALWAYS BE A REASON FOR YOU TO SLAG OFF YOUR MANAGER. Seeing you have all the answers, WENGER MUST LEAVE NOW, and we should install one of you clever clogs as our new manager! I spoke to my Man Utd and Man City friends last night and they all wished they were in Arsenal's shoes (even if only for yesterday). But hey, God Bless the arsenal fans on onlinegooner: they're busy telling the world how bad things are at arsenal and what a useless manager we have. Goodness me! why do we continue to fixate on things that will never happen?! Buy players - chelsea did (Torres), but guess who keeps scoring? DROGBA. Liverpool did (Carroll), but guess who's ahead of them? (the club they bought him from: Newcastle). We cant have it all. your cup will always be half empty folks. Come on you gooners! you have my 100% support and hopefully we continue to do well this season!!

Stating the bleeding obvious about the teams inadequacy or Wenger's blind spots is not treachery. The squad is thin and the team reliant on RVP (we have no decent back up striker). We need 2/3 more quality players in Jan to put us in with a shout of top 4.( He rarely buys in jan) Without them we will fall away in the second half of the season as fatigue and injury takes it toll like last season.

    Dec 08, 2011, 16:14 #15769

GunnerPete if you think that this is a great squad then im afraid there is no hope for you. Wenger will not buy in Jan,he thinks his squad is good enough. This man has a blind side as regards defending and goalkeeping. Also would people stop mentioning Lehman as there are much better keepers out there. AW could have bought Shay Given some time ago but refused. He also could have bought a holding midfielder but was deemed not technical enough!

    Dec 08, 2011, 13:55 #15764

Gunner Pete, what Tuesday night clearly showed was that Wenger has not built a 'great squad', just a decent first eleven that will suffer more embarrassments when the inevitable injuries occur. I'm sure he will 'get us through yet again', probably to the comfortable fourth place that will keep him his job whilst avoiding spending the money we have available on players capable of taking us to the next level. If you're happy with that then good luck to you, but reading Fabregas this morning comparing the anger after a Barcelona defeat with the tame response from Arsenal fans when we get beaten pretty much sums it up. As for your expectation of two world class arriving in January, keep writing those letters to Santa!

In my opinion Wenger was to blame for the non performance the other night he picks the team and chooses the tactics and refuses to change either when its not working chamckh should have come off before half time and arshavin should have been moved into midfield where he captains russia from did anyone notice the ball he played from exactly that position to the waster chamckh that led to our goal and miguel should have started instead of djourou in the latter stages he should have brought on siad horse face and move vermallen up front if park had faile to impress again i remained convinced we wont see the best of arshavin untill wenger plays him in the position he used to occupy so well for russia and zenit after all that must be why we bought him in the first place or does wenger buy a washing machine for his home and insist on using it as a fridge

Gooner Pete fantastic.Comedy is not dead.Wenger has given us our back our pride this year.Well here goes first club in premiership history to lose a 4 goal lead, lose a cup final to a team that got relegated,go from 2nd to 4th in a 2 horse race, lose our best player,Worst defeat in 115 years, worse start in 56 years.Yeah you're right this year will be remembered with pride by every Gooner.

Agree with Jekyll's comment. If Wenger brings in a world class player or two in January then I am a dutchman - talking of which we will more than likely see another world class player leave next summer. However I do agree that Wenger's record, even over the current barren spell, would be the envy of most Premiership clubs. This is Arsenal we are talking about though, not the Spuds or Villa, and this squad of players is nothing like as strong as it should be. Ferguson has been caught out this time by not buying a quality midfielder or two and Wenger is always caught out by his penny pinching ways and by living in the eternal hope that his young players and cheap buys will eventually come good. Recent history tells us that too many of them will not and therefore we will more than likely be found wanting again at the business end of the season. I am not saying it is easy to find the right players but Wenger, continually saying he doesn't need another striker / keeper or whatever else we are usually crying out for, drives me mad.

Gunner Pete, so Arsene has 'given us back some pride this year' has he? Strange, because I thought we were still in 2011, a year which has seen some of the most embarassing results in the history of AFC and much of which was spent in relegation form. There have been a few decent results towards the end of the year. Not sure that really makes it a year to be proud of. And if you don't think LB is a problem position when the two LBs in the squad are injured, it should be pointed out that even your 'God' would see this as a problem. Finally, on what basis or precedence do you expect him to bring in a world class player or two, after several years of selling world class players and not replacing them? Why do you think there is going to be a sudden change of policy?

  31. GunnerPete

    Dec 08, 2011, 10:01 #15755

OK...you Wenger knockers....who was it who brought Szczesny to AFC....or come to that Jens ? No manager is foolproof...ask the other 'best Fergie'. He has paid out a fortune on De Gea etc and they are worse than Flappy. Just be glad to be proved wrong yet again as Arsene gets us through yet again. He has built a great squad again and with luck we will have several players back soon. We are 5th...not bottom , we are in the last 16 in the top tournament in the world and in the FA cup...after the start we had..what else do you berks want? As for the left back position being a problem??? You must be a lot of kids with no knowledge of real football...we Have Miqel to start with...we have Coquelin, and Angar...when else do you give your stiffs a chance to rpove they are good enough? How the hell do you think Jack & Frimmy + Gibbs got there? We have plenty of options open to Arsene 'The God'. And I expect him to add a world class player or two this January. So get off the back stabbing and support the man who has given us back some pride this year!

I have lost count of the mistakes Flappyhandski has made in his Arsenal career yet Wenger just will not bomb him out.An injury to Szczesny is up there with an injury to RVP.We just dont have any cover for both. Then we have Wenger coming out and saying the squad doesnt need strengthening in january. What planet is he on? The goalkeeping chaos is all down to Wenger. We loaned out Average al but we kept Flappy the clown who has made more cock ups than Al and Mannone put together. What is it with Wenger and his blind spot with keepers. We have a great keeper in Szczesny but the other three Stooges wouldnt get on the bench at any other premiership club. For club the size of Arsenal to not have a decent back up keeper is nothing short of a disgrace and that is down to Wenger. It says it all that the 2nd best keeper at the club last season was 39 year old Jens who had retired
