What Arsenal Need

One fan's humble opinion on strengthening the squad

What Arsenal Need

Hazard: Why wait until the summer?

The answer to this is simple, yet hard to come by. A trophy. Be it Carling or FA Cup or the league title or Champions League, we need to end the drought. Like a man in the desert, stranded, thirsty, the fans deserve it, and the club needs it. Finishing 3rd or 4th is just not good enough anymore. Second either. The team have learned plenty of lessons in the past 6 seasons of how to throw things away. Clearly we should be able to see the signs and stop them early. There is a recipe for success that Wenger still won’t follow. I am no psychic, no mind reader. I cannot predict the future. As human beings, we can only control what we can and have to trust to a higher power that the rest will take care of itself. However, Wenger continues to avoid doing the things under his control to bring this club championships. To make us winners again. He can and should do more and that is all we critics ask.

Everyone talked about how it was inevitable we lost the Carling Cup game this year to City. Why? We haven’t won a trophy in 6 years, so I think any trophy possible is a good thing, no? The slack defending on the counter cost us a possible semi-final spot. But, where was Wenger? Again he praises the failure. His words: “That's just a learning process and I feel sorry we lost a game like that which we shouldn't have.” I am no ignoramus. I know you must spin things now and then to protect your team and players. But, where is the other side of that coin from Arsene? Only once in the last few years have I heard about the man raising his voice and tearing into his team about a poor performance or loss. Learning process, still? We need a manager who isn’t afraid to give his team and players a good “hairdryer” when the occasion presents itself. Stop coddling these players, even the young ones. And maybe we would pull off a win like the CC game the other night. I for one would have remembered it for a long, long time. And no, I don’t think a real turnaround has happened yet. Arsene again: “But the spirit has been excellent again and that will take us far.” What is far? Top four? Far should be the top, a trophy. When he says these things, it makes me yearn for someone else. Someone who can, at least once in a while, be honest. These types of losses occur all too often these days for my palate.

We need to buy and now. This January we have another chance to strengthen. No more talk of killing other players’ motivation or not needing someone in this position or he will be like a new signing. The team needs bona fide additions. Now. Not this summer or next year. Now. Just look at the recent seasons past. We have never salvaged the season or kept on with a continued positive run. It has always ended in shambles. Gotze, Hazard, M’Villa, whomever. Especially someone to take RVP’s place and give him rest. But bolster the squad Arsene. Show the fans you continue to learn and reinvent yourself. Give us the team we and a club of our stature deserves. With the right squad and continued success in the next few years, Arsenal could gain more popularity globally and really be one of the top 5 sides in the world for years to come. We don’t need a squad like City’s. But a first 11 of top quality and a bench of at least 5 or 6 really good subs would not be asking too much, would it? It is now necessary if you want to truly compete for trophies.

Arsene, you must from now on keep our top players, even some into their retirement. Show RVP, TV, and Wilshire you are serious about competing in the modern game. Keep older players with loyalty around to teach the young guns a thing or two about dedication and commitment, hard work. No longer can you let our best players leave and tell us it will all be ok. It won’t. Remember Man United this year? The Blackburn game? By strengthening the squad, you not only bring in better players, but those who are already here get competition for places and a message this club wants to win. The cream will rise to the top.

I will support and watch this team through thick and thin. But, I will not stand idly by when I think our great club is falling or going backwards under a once great manager. I don’t just want to beat bottom three clubs like Wigan. Arsene and the club can still be great again. Our history shows this. But, time waits for no man. Six failed seasons is too long. If profits and top four is all this club aspire too, we will continue to see our best players leave and substandard ones come in. We cannot indulge players not cutting it season after season anymore. It is this one thing that Man United and Ferguson do that keeps them top drawer each year. They trim the fat and reinforce their team each year while keeping proven veterans to show others the ropes. And I do not like United very much. But, I respect winners, no matter how much I loathe them. They continue to win and have won even when they lose players like Ronaldo. Sure, develop our youth, but how many Jack Wilshires will come through our academy again? Give those quality players we have more of a chance as well. Even Park and Chamakh are owed more time. The Ox should start receiving more minutes soon as well. Why keep that kind of talent on the bench so often? It is well known players can burn out if not rested, but he has not even been a sub in many games this year.

Once our squad is up to par, I believe the poorer quality players will stand out more and be shown the door sooner. Or else the level of expectation will push them to succeed and become better. Look at the character and mettle of a player, not just their talent. We could have signed a player like Scott Parker on the cheap but didn’t. And look at the year he is having with our bitter rivals and England. Yes, I’d still rather have Arteta and Gervinho than Parker, but we need more players who are battlers. Arsenal still have some big holes to fill, and we can’t wait until this summer to get the old shovel out. If we are to be great again, we must continue to build and grow. Only one man has the power right now to do it.

Everyone wants to blame Wenger but like most managers he is just the front man working within the boundries that the board have set him. And to be fair to him he has done well. I think the larger issue is that there are a lot of fickle AFC fans. When the fans get behind the team we can beat the best (Barca as an example) but too many games the 12th man (us) dont show up and make enough noise to sometimes give the team a lift! Granted they are paid a lot to perform but some fans on here need to look at how they are supporting team at the same as judging Wenger.

Personally, I want an out-and-out striker, a poacher like Papiss Cisse or Moussa Sow. Yes, Hazard is a great player with a BIG future, but look at his stats. 21 goals in 4 fully active seasons. That averages out to just over 5 a season - Walcott scores more than that. CIsse on the other hand has scored 37 in 63 appearances. Sow has scored 29 in 48. These average out as as 15 and 19 goals a seasn respectively. THESE are the players we need. We could also do with Vertonghen, who can deputise at RB if Sagna is injured again.

He will not buy in January. Even when we lose Gervinho and Chamakh for 6 weeks. He will continue to play Arshavin week in week out at the expense of blooding the ox. I'm not asking for the ox to play every game until May, but he should be in the bench in my view, even if it means some weeks he doesn't come on. But he is a better impact player than Arshavin from the bench. The striker situation is very worrying. Park does not look premiership quality and Chamakh has lost it big time. There has to be better options available to us in the premiership. Someone like Dembele at Fulham would add more than Chamakh, if a cheap option was plumped for by AW. I certainly don't see him spending £15m+ on a striker in Jan

you play an awful lot of pes12, football manager or whatever. You saw (or did you) against fulham that we were down to our bones physically and the first team deserved to be rested. Now let me remind you that city is by far the best team in england losing only 4 points this season. And then that team gets owned and outplayed by our reserve team and you can't even say well done. Sure the goal we conceded was naive but in that instance even i would have done the same thing as wenger, praise the team. secondly yes sometimes i'd like wenger to bash his team when they're poor but that is not his personality, each of us have our own and the solution to our problem might not be sacking wenger and to be honest how many managers are better than he is. We've amassed 22 points from a possible 24. Give the man some respect. COYG

A Christmas fanasy, obviously but if top quality players are available in th window Arsenal should gamble and go all out for them. It's not all about this season. The club needs to make a statement and set up a platform to show their ambition, regardless of where we finish in May 2012. This would be good for new season ticket sales, persuading out of contract players to resign and reinforcing the message that that Arsenal FC has no intention of going into long term decline. All of this of course is the wishful thinking of a fan who has no understanding of professional football realities.

i've kept a count and all i can say is: thank goodness there are only 10 or so commentaries on here that have remained bizarrely negative. A lot of the others who blindly criticize wenger are now doing it with some commonsense (i.e. looking at the real issues e.g. David Dein's departure, ignorant board and the overall difficulties of finding decent players to buy without man city grabbing 'em). for the silly ones who still say wenger must go (without as much as suggesting whom they wish to replace him with) - you only need look at the heavy spenders around: liverpool fans love daglish even with his bumbling and all the money spent, avb will make good etc. get real you remaining 10 blind mice..... you're not as clever as you hink you are - if managing a football team was so easy, you wont be a blogger...

Oh me miserum - I have spent about half an hour reading the most negative postings for the last three days - I do notice though, that when Arsenal lose there seems to be a lot more critcal editorials quickly posted, then positive ones when they win ( an those usually take a bit of time appearing). No trophy for six years - boo hoo. Both city and utd out of the CL - the play each other in the FA cup so one of them are going to be out of that competition as well. Lets buy, buy ,buy because rumour has it that this player is available and that player wants to move - bollocks - reality is no team is going to let go of star players at this time of year - they want to get rid of the dead wood and players that mean nothing to them. It is like Arsenal being willing to sell RVP during the window

Tom,Syd- There is no need for Wenger to be 'keeping the ship afloat' at the expense of serious challenges for the trophies that matter. The club are in a fantastic financial position and the manager has minimum £50m in the pot that he could spend on Jan 1st, but the problem is that due to his ideals, principles and project, Wenger doesn't use all the resources at his disposal and keeps faith in players that are clearly not good enough. A more relevant question would be will he change with the times? I for one won't hold my breath. Gooner S- Do you live nextdoor to Homer Simpson?

That was then this is now! A new team is building. You can't judge this team on what happened 5 or 6 years ago. Trophies are nice when they come along and of course every fan of every club would like one (I'm no different) but if you support Arsenal *just* to see them win trophies or you measure a good season on that alone you will have more dissapointment than joy if our history is anything to go by. We have a good team. It isn't good emough to win the league at the moment. We might do well in the FA Cup, with a bit of luck and lets see what the Champions League brings us - to get to the quarters would be good, to get to the semi's would be fantastic. So, we need to add a bit more quality in attack and mid-field. I think we will do that in January as long as there is a good deal to be had. In the summer the defence will need a little bit more work. In the meantime roll on 3.00pm and kick-off vs. Everton.

Almunia a keeper who shouldnt even be at the club who we couldnt get rid of in the summer because no one could afford his wages is on the bench today and we are only an injury to Szczesny and he is back in goal.Sums Wenger's attitude to keepers up.Will he buy a keeper in january? No

'If I had money today, I'd put in on Neymar....'Those are the words of a manager with ambition but without the resources. Unfortunately, we fans seem to live in dreamland where the obvious limitations of our Club do not exist.

Some very true words spoken. It has been frustrating to see the fortunes of the team of late - the only thing that I don't understand is why people think a signing like hazard will automatically propel us to a trophy. It won't. And I think spending anything more than 25 mil on a player is ridiculous. You only have to look at Liverpool: Caroll 35 mil, Henderson 20 mil. Both are rubbish. If Carol had cost 10 mil I bet he would not even make the bench. But because of his hefty price tag management have to give him chances to try and get some sort of return from their investment. Torres is another example. Anyone remember Mutu, or Shevchenko for chelsea in the years gone by? Point is spending that much money on a player is ridiculous. I would love to see Goetze in our team. I think he would be great. But for 30 mil, forget about it. Find someone else. M'Vila if we can get him for under 25 mil (although that seems unlikely).maybe Shaquiri would be a,cheaper alternative? Or Eriksen? A backup for RVP is most vital, but then which player with class would sign knowing they would be playing second fiddle? The solutions to these problems are incredibly complicated. Easy to say what we want, but then how do we go about doing it? I do agree with giving other players more playing time, like the ox, coquelin, maybe miyachi and ignasi, definately Yossi. It is hard to change a team that is in form but more opportunities must be invented to get more of the squad involved. It's a fail safe for injuries. But the CC? No thanks, not at the expense of a CL spot, and it could really come down to that this season. Do you think winning the CC will attract more players than playing in the CL? Nope. Tough decisions must be made. We had a chance to do both last year, and failed. I agree Wenger should be a bit more cut throat at times with his players, but overall I am more worried about what would happen if he left? Is he keeping the team from achieving greatness again or is he keeping the ship afloat. Once you answer that you can make sound opinions about everything else...

spurs are now favourites for the league. says it all. on £65mpa wage bill compared to arsene's £110mpa, Arry has got a better starting 14. arsene prefers to have 12 other super average players like Diaby and pay them £60kpa for doing nothing. i could have sworn i saw him strolling through paris this week eating a croissant enjoying himself. weak management !

Blah blah, you are living in la la land Wenger is here to stay and there is noother manager that can keep us in the running for trophies on the money he does. He has kept us in touch with the top teams whilst spending no where near what they have done, we don't have the money to compete for the transfer fees or wages of man u, chelsea or man city so get over and get behind the team.

The worry is the gulf in class between RVP,WS & as we have seen their replacements be it rested, rotated or injured.AW has missed David Dein AW trusted him & you feel he would have convinced AW to be more bold over these last few years in the transfer market of that i think @CanadaGooner is correct. What does strike me is Darren his son now has RVP amongst his newest clients i can tell you 100% we would have a better chance of keeping him if Mr.Dein senior was still at the club i think i will leave it at that!

Canada - The issue isnt 'getting the best players available' (ive not ever known one match going Gunners fan ever ask for that)its about not getting and tolerating the puny efforts of some of the weakest players available and then keeping faith with them for 4-6 years when its blindingly obvious they cant hack it. As for Van Persie, hes never cracked off a full season yet and judging by the noises coming from Wenger himself suggests hes not really expecting him to do it this time either. We need a genuine A N Other striker. Those alongside RVP arent up to it. Too hit and miss or not even hitting and missing at all.

We hide behind the fact the Wenger has been good for Arsenal but in reality his decision has been so poor and he needs to be told. How come no one seems to be able to tell him that rather than soothe his overinflated ego. I'm not sure he is a good manager in recent times, he plays mediocre players and once in a while we get results, but Arsenal don't go into games and we are assured of the positive outcome - when we win we are relieved after a traumatic 90 mins for ones heart! My conclusion, Wenger is not the answer, he used to be, but not anymore

I find some of these comments puzzling! Ronaldo, Rooney, Messi and others have had seasons where they scored consistently and got their teams across the line - why shouldnt RVP do the same (he's been with Arsenal several years and is yet to get through a full season - why cant it be this season?). Give him a rest? not in the league! The rest he gets is by not playing in the Carling Cup or dead rubber matches like our game against Olympiacos. All this molly-cuddling is disgraceful! how much do you think these players earn a week? (more than most of us earn in 2 years perhaps?) We blubber every time about not taking the Carling Cup seriously - if Wenger plays our best team in the Carling Cup and we pickup injuries, the whole world will come down hard on him. When he did play a full strenght team what happened? They got complacent and lost the final to birmingham. Yes, why dont we just blame Wenger eh? Nevermind a goup of players earning tons per week and not bothering to turnup against an average side like birmingham! Arsenal will never get the best players available: we simply cant match the big-spenders, all we can do is buy shrewdly and to do that, you cant have the same fellow running the day-to-day business of playing footie, running that side of the business, and the absence of a David Dein figure has cost us dearly in recent years. A new manager, new board and different approach to football is probably the only way you folks will get what you're asking for. With the current regime and team, it would be idiotic to hope for anything more than what we have right now, which is still much better than what most teams have, but may not be good enough for mighty arsenal - fair enough Let's keep things in perspective though

Great article and very true but no doubt you will soon be hammered by those that will not see and accept the problems. I have actually given up getting upset by Wengers decisions because he wont change. We still need a midfield enforcer but when one was available AW didnt rate him and now he is one of the best players in his position.I will always support Arsenal but have given up on Wenger.

The terrible summer has meant Wenger can press the rewind button and start again - yet again. We're in an eternal 'learning process'. And rather than 4th place being not good enough anymore, it will be seen as a major achievement if managed this season. And you have many fans who are happy with the above. Wenger is not one for 'learning and reinventing' himself, he has his way and that is that.

We've been ok, considering we havent had any serious injuries to key players as we usually do. But that will come. If we are still doing well by January however, what a statement of intent would that be if we actually went BOSH here is £30m for Hazard? That would send out a message to everyone that we mean business (even if we need more then just Hazard, as we definately need a couple more players as well). But can you honestly see us paying for Hazard or the like? Probably end up going for Alex and Anelka.

I fear you are banging your head against the brick wall that is Arsene Wenger. I am resigned to it now and am back to expecting no trophies like I used to be many years ago. I am enjoying my football much more now because of this and my advice to you is don't let Wenger's crazy decisions get under your skin - it is just not worth it.
