Would the club drop lower season ticket prices for the Europa League?

The Ox: The real deal

I didn't waste my Sunday afternoon but am at half-time today on Arsenal.com. at work. I must need therapy. Just at the time the editor and the Highbury Spy were wondering whether 7th place wouldn't be better than 5th, thus avoiding Europa League, me and a fellow Gooner were having the same conversation. I definitely don't want to be watching (even for free) a secondary competition on any night, Thursday or other. It will be interesting to see how season tickets are priced if we play in the Europa. If they try to extend our loyalty to the maximum, including these games and at no reduction over CL prices, then there will surely be a massive head for the exit.

And even I, who consider myself on the AKB side of the fence, will have to think thrice about paying £2,000 for effectively 15 matches; 3 or 4 of the 19 PL games I invariably miss each season due to clashes with cricket (both ends of season), Christmas holiday away at the folks (thanks to Bob Crow this year, mind, I saw Wolves), and other holidays/things coming up. So I'll be looking at £2,000 to see the 5 to 7 games I really want (the rest we could all get tickets for easily and cheaply). As Americans (including Stan the Man) say, "do the math".

I also don't see RVP staying after this season. And who could blame him? He's due a final, massive pay-day before career end / decline due to Old Father Time. And he should want to max out and also win something that his talent deserves. Where that will leave Jack the Lad, I have to wonder? The Ox's trickery demands he starts NOW. When I wrote about him previously I cautioned about wanting too much too soon but he's the real deal. It was noticeable that Leeds' players were physically intimidated by him, or so I thought. Any opinions? And his flick inside immediately after half-time v. Leeds was incredible.

I also agree re: Vermaelen. He'll be captain next season, though quite why he's committed his future to us is a mystery as I can see many big clubs coveting him. Btw, Yennaris and Coquelin both did really well at right-back v. Leeds, I thought.

But we have been amazingly unfortunate with injuries - even by our standards. I think back to Eduardo's dive v. Celtic that was stirred up out of all proportion by the media and huge anti-English elements in Scotland, and then I see the penalty given against Ramsey where there was no contact and an affected fall to ground and no criticism of the player because it's little Swansea against nasty Arsenal. Life just ain't fair.

But credit to Swansea for playing both a pressing and passing game on such a limited budget. That no side has scored twice there this season before Sunday is an amazing statistic for a team promoted via the play-offs.

No, they wouldnt drop the price in season tickets!. Certain Europa league games would however doubtless attract a Carling Cup type lower price to an anticipated regular general sale though.

Ron and SP spot on, the S.T. prices are an insult as was the 6.5% hike,it's not value for money anymore, the kick off times are a joke as are some of the players, indeed enough IS enough, next season would have been my 50th, should have stopped when we left our beloved Highbury, has'nt been the same since, gutted

jonesey ( 18972 ) kroenke has not got involved with football because he shares our passion for Arsenal , he is there for one reason only, Nina bracewell-smith walked away with £81 million and her husbands family have been involved with Arsenal for many years, how much was given back to the club, nothing, our board of directors are making money year after year, yet our team are getting poorer and poorer, let Mr Usmanov get to at least 30% so he can be free to look at the books and maybe some honesty might come out. I was at the shareholders meeting and kroenke said nothing to get me excited about, lets at least have another big hitter involved

are we really that unlucky with injuries? i think its time to start asking more questions about training methods and why we are getting so many injuries, it can't be purely coincidental that it happens season after season, we seem to be paying a heavy price from training our players as athletes rather than footballers!

I'm with you Ron. I have been attending matches since the late 60's and have been a season ticket holder for over 35 years but this is my last season too. I have had more than enough of being ripped off, being charged top dollar to watch the likes of Arshavin loaf around and I just don't feel any connection with the manager and the players now. I don't understand Wenger anymore and some of our players are a disgrace and not fit to wear the shirt. I will become an armchair supporter and hope that something happens soon to arrest the slump that has been going on since 2006. On a wider football note I really do think that the CL is the worst thing to have happened to football. Firstly it is a joke because it is not just the champions playing and the fact that the top 3 or 4 from each country are entered means that the Europa becomes a micky mouse competition. As someone has already said Europe used to have 3 great competitions, all of which used to excite supporters. I was there in 1970 to see us win the Fairs Cup and it was one of the most memorable nights I have witnessed. Then there was the Cup Winners Cup win against Parma. Now the CL is the be all and end all and although Arsenal have qualified every year for the last umpteen years where has it got us? We don't sign the top players supposedly meant to be attracted to CL clubs, we (the fans) know we are not good enough to actually win the thing and all it has done is to enable Wenger to kid himself and the board that everything in the garden is rosy. Well it is not kidding me anymore and I will watch from the comfort of my chair with my memories of better times. Please Arsenal sort it out now!!

Nick - Genius interpretation of the event, I hadn't seen it that way. I think for many, many reasons it is a good job I am not a PL ref. Although if I were, Arsenal would get a few more dodgy decisions in their favour!

chrisy boy- How does Wenger make Kroenke money? Kroenke takes no dividend on his shares + hasn't sold any shares (he's never sold any shares of any sporting organisation he's ever owned). If either of these two situations change I'll be the first to slag him off but there's no sign of it at the moment. You can sell your shares to Usmanov if you want but I don't want a sugar daddy owning our club as every bought trophy win would be hollow + worthless, + I trust this particular sugar daddy about as far as I could throw him which obviously is not very far. All I want is for our current manager to spend the considerable amount of disposable funds that we have on players that are better than those we have now. Please.

In respect of ticketing/pricing the club has an arrogance that has has stunk for years, considered as customer cannon fodder (no pun intended) with zero customer service because if you don.t like it someone else will take your place and spend the money . With a team that continues to under perform, will the followers still come and pay their money (check attendances during the glory years of the early/mid eighties)? The whole club not just the playing staff are at an important point in the history of the club if we are to be considered a premier league power and a potential champions(we dream)winner. The club has the arrogance of winners without actually winning put those two together and that hurts us all.

The sad fact is Uefa got rid of 3 really good competitions and replaced it with 2 crap ones. Loads of cash in the CL but with the seeding generally dull until the knock out stage. Another bunch of money grabbing.........

JER : I was also there in 1970 when we won the Fairs Cup but what you forget in those days teams who finished 2nd 3rd & 4th in their respective leagues entered the Fairs Cup. Today the 2nd 3rd & 4th teams are in the Champions League, the Europa league is for teams who finish top of the middle section of their division. In some countries it is equivellent of playing a Div 1 team in our leagues. For me failure to finish in the top 4 is like having your club downgraded and certainly will make signing any player of note very difficult. The only way we will be in the CL next season is if we win it this year! Any money on Wenger telling the board and the fans that this team can win the Champions League? - would not surprise me one bit.

i know this blog is all about season tickets and europa league, but i just want to look at the bigger picture. Fact wenger is making stan money, Fact stan is not going to sack wenger even if he makes less money next season due to no champions league football. Fact one of our 4 or 5 decent players will be sold to cover the loss of champions league football. Fact until Mr Usmanov reaches 30% of shares nothing can be done to force changes at our great club, this is where us as fans can make a difference starting with the Arsenal supporters trust, they could go into partnership with Mr Usmanov and maybn offer him some shares as long as the fans still have a say in running our club, those fans with maybe just 2 or 3 shares myself included could sell just one share ( and i bought my shares as a fan not for profit ) lets put pressure on the board and wenger, in my mind both are past the sell by dates or in stans case to line his own pockets. Lets see what Usmanov as got to say and offer he surely cant do any worse.

The season ticket price is a joke if we have no champions league. Plus failure to qualify will leave wenger looking very average. Our wage bill and facilities are massive. This is one of the biYggest failures in sport. Make no doubt about. Wenger will end up back in France in a heart beat. He lives for the champions league. Its the best sporting competition on earth. Stan and Ivan will be ****ting themselves.

my son is eleven years old when he was five i put his name down for a season ticket thinking with the waiting list it would be ten to fifteen years when he gets an offer and he would be capable of paying for it himself his position then was 54,290 his position now six years on ? just under 14 ,000 he could well have an offer next season or the one after that i know we are in recession but surely that tells us something.

Ron I'm with you 100%. Done 43 years now and enough is enough for me come May. We've been sold the big lie in the move from Highbury and as I've said a few times over the last few years "this isn't the club I fell in love with anymore!" only voting with our feet will change the boards direction and we've a few more years before that happens as the waiting list will take up the initial slack. Very sad times.

AW will love the Europa League. It will basically be an extended version of the carling cup for him to indulge in playing 16 year olds, and developing more talent that he is so obsessed with. In fact he'd probably clear out the entire squad and fill it with teens for this

Canada Gooner- Another long post blaming everyone but Wenger. Nothing will change while fans keep picking on the wrong targets, and while everyone knows that some of our players are lazy, stupid or just not good enough, Wenger keeps selecting them to play, and not replacing them with higher quality when the transfer windows come around, despite having loads of money that no-one is stopping him from spending. You can blame the board (for compliance) and the players (for complacency) with justification all you like, but our fortunes will only improve when the manager goes.

When TV signed his extension he actually said at the time he felt he owed the club something.Interesting as you normally get soundbites about matching a players ambition/moving in the right direction etc etc!The away support have been the shining light for me this season the backing they have given the team has been outstanding. If i played for the club i would only have to think back to OT they gave up that day the fans didn't.The season has been a disaster saving for a decent run in autumn the club only really care about selling corporate seats/boxes.The average supporter means nothing to most big clubs.

Loyalty doesn't count anymore, forget that. Unless, and unlikely that we spend some money, RvP will be gone in the summer and the discontent will wind up. However, only see him sold after Euro 2012 is finished when ST money is in anyway.......

Rj if you thoght that was a pen within the rules thank god your not a premier league ref, dyer blatantly raked his studs down ramseys shin ,it was his standing leg and could have resulted in serious injury if he hadnt dragged his leg back "AWAY" from dyer, who then fell over to win the pen, he should be given a retrospective ban for dangerous play and cheating

Don't know much about business, but I guess the question of ticket prices is about supply and demand. Why do Arsenal charge so much? Cos people pay the prices. The thing is: will people continue to pay so much for continuing poor performances? For lots of people the answer will undoubtedly be yes as some Gooners would go without food in order to see the Arsenal. But for many - and I reckon it's a good half of our new capacity - will say no thanks. But change will only come if we stand up for ourselves or fail to buy tickets. If we stand up and protest we MIGHT be able to salvage something - something that can be built upon to halt our obvious and terrible slide. But if we simply slink away, the damage caused could be so extensive that it would take years for the club to recover. I don't really buy into the argument that in today's world of the Premiership, the fans don't count. I'd say that with teams that don't qualify for Europe, the revenue from supporters becomes extremely important. A half empty Emirates outside of the CL and Europa would be disastrous.

I think that the club would benefit avoiding the europa league as the injuries we always seem to get can only be exacerbated by playing moe games. Yes it does seem that RVP will have to leave and I can see TV and JW may well have to go if they want to win things. The management at Arsenal seem to have given up trying to compete for any trophy and have an incomprehensible transfer policy

Good points! My biggest concern is if we're in the Europa will we (ST holders) be forced to pay for 7 home cup ties like we currently do. Not being funny but I have no interest in going on a Thursda night at non decent hours (some of those games k.o. at 4pm for instance).

mate, "you dont see RVP staying after this season"? well, he should! unlike fabregas RVP happily took his pay cheque for several months while sitting on the sideline injured. this is his first ever full season (if he makes it) and loyalty should be shown to the fans who have stood by him all those years. that said, if we apply common-sense, there's nothing for him to stay for, we're not going anywhere in a hurry and i dont see us becoming competitive anytime soon (unless the $$$$ stop tumbling in and our businessmen owners/board want more - but they'll probably just sell some more of our better players and replace them with a handful of teenagers). You also mentioned you're surprised TV5 committed his future to arsenal? why are you surprised? has that ever stopped players from leaving if/when they want to? besides, that's another one who's been collecting his pay cheque while only playing every other game due to injuries. what on earth has football turned to these days? fans no longer expect nor demand any loyalty from our players. fine! they can all bugger-off if they want to, they've been a collective disgrace this season anyway, and wasting time singling any one of them out for praise is pointless. football's a team sport and right now our team su#ks!

This notion that the Europa League is a Mickey Mouse cup and not worth entering is ridiculous. It is still a trophy and replaces the old UEFA cup/ Cup Winners Cup. I was there when we beat Anderlecht in 1969 and it was the best night I ever had at Highbury, and it was our first trophy for 18 years. Also it is very important for our younger players to experience Eurpoean football. The likes of Jack and Aaron and the Ox have only played against a handful of European teams. Who cares if it is on a Thursday!

Dont be surprised if they accept a bid for Wilshere in the Summer if we end up out of the top 4. Lets face it, hes next off after RVP. Suspect Utd would pay big,big bucks for him. It makes me wonder who the next sellable asset would be after RVP and JW. TV maybe, yet he seems to be happy with his lot. Perhaps its his fitness issues thats keeping him stable though? I believe RVP would have gone long before now without his own fitness difficulties. Now hes is fit, i think the prospect of his sale has Arsenal salivating, yet they wont admit it. Hes at his peak, hes likely to break down again and hes not got the body to play much past 30-32 so his decline may start after this Season. Youre right to wonder about Season tickets. I can only speak for myself and say that my threshold was reached at the last price hike. Its my 40th Season this season as a match going supporter and my last as a Season ticket holder. I am of the view now that football itself as a product doesnt merit the cost compared to other activities. I love Arsenal and always will but im done in May. Europa league gets a bit of unfair press. Eurpean fans dont belittle like we do and for a Club like Arsenal, they shd take it seriously. Its a trophy and the other better trophies arent coming their way for many a while after all.It would be misplaced arrogance to treat it any other way. Arsenal have become arrogant in my view for no good reason, so they will maybe treat the EL with disdain sadly.

It's no mystery why Tommy V decided to stay. He's injured most of the time and seems intelligent enough to have weighed up the prospect of continuing to be often injured and made the pragmatic decision to sign the contract on offer.

Arsenal cut prices are you having a laugh? They have the cheek to put the FA cup games on the season tickets. So they will have no shame in putting the europa league on the ST.And for all the bull about not renewing there will always be 40,000 doughnuts who will.Just look how they bent over and took it when the club brought in the 6.5% rise. One day fans will realse we are a business not a football club

The way I saw the penalty on MOTD reverse angle there was contact and a harsh but within-the-rules penalty. Can question whether the ref could see it as clearly from where he was, but I don't think we can complain about that
