Could a short-term hit wake up the powers that be?

Europa League: Looking more likely next season?

There is nothing worse than getting beaten at your own game. There is nothing worse than gifting the game to the opposition with soft goals. There is nothing worse than failing to capitalise on your nearest rivals' slip-ups. This weekend, Arsenal managed to achieve all three of the aforementioned and suffered their second straight league defeat. Whisper it, but a loss at home on Sunday against Man Utd may plunge us back into yet another crisis of the type we saw in August.

Let’s rewind back to the Fulham game, where they absolutely pulverised us in the second half. Against Swansea, time and again Miquel, Arshavin, Walcott and even Henry, when he came on, gave the ball away or were poorly positioned as the Swansea full-backs and wingers pressed on. Perhaps we missed Arteta. However, the pressing point is that Ramsey gave the ball away far too much and, while I believe that he is an excellent footballer, he is playing his first full season in the EPL and has been slightly overplayed. Ignore Wenger's claims that it was a harsh decision; Ramsey's trailing leg left the referee no option but to give a penalty. But what really riled me was how, just after getting back into the game, like many times in the past six years we threw it away by sloppy defending. How many times have you been on the official site where an Arsenal player has claimed that the team will "learn from the defeat"? We repeat the same mistakes over and over again with different players.

I am usually very bullish and positive, but I have had lingering doubts about the team since we scraped a win at Villa Park, and I truly believe that our chances for fourth spot will hang on the Sunday game at the Emirates against Utd. Lose that, and Chelsea could be seven points clear, while Newcastle are already level with us on 36 points, with Liverpool only one point back.

What will we learn even if we do finish fourth? Perhaps in order truly to move forward, Arsenal may have to take a short-term hit in order to wake up the powers-that-be at the club. As it goes, Spurs are now ten points ahead. The best-case scenario is that they lose at the Etihad on Sunday while we beat United, cutting the gap to seven. But on present form, it is wishful thinking to start pre-assuming outcomes that will get us back in contention. There is a very, very real possibility that Spurs will finish above us. Considering they also have a strict wage-structure and a smaller stadium, it makes you think how far we have regressed since moving to the Emirates.

Is there anything to be positive about? Yes, in the sense that Wilshere will return along with Sagna, and perhaps RvP and Henry can pull a rabbit out of the hat on Sunday, but don't hold your breath. I have calculated that we can't actually lose any more games this season to have a chance of automatic Champions League qualification... does anyone really believe that, with our soft-centred defensive capabilities, this will really happen? Didn't think so.

What I do expect is some pride in our performance on Sunday, some anger at recent results and the same determination that Swansea and Fulham showed. We could be 7th by Sunday evening and if we do not win, the "Arsene must go" school of thought - which I do not agree with - will start again.

I'm with Fozzy's mate here. CanadaGooner has told us that AFC will finish top 4 so we must take his word and stop complaining about Wenger. Equally, perhaps CG should stop posting until his prophecy does or doesn't come true next May - he's made his point. Do we have a deal?

Why do I get this felling that when Sagna and Jack did come back, then its time for RVP to visit the sick room. But I'm not worried, we still have Cha'off-the'mark with able support from Theo and Asssaving. S***.....

Pradeep as you say a departure from your normally bullish and optimistic pieces. I think the only thing that will change the status quo will be a total collapse. The OT debacle finally shook em into a panic spree but a more considered period of acquisitions may follow hat I see as an almost certain finish outside the top 4 and possibly top 6. Canada - again toys out job. The masses are finally turning against the Denver dough trouserer.

wow! what a cynical bunch. starting to sound like you all did at the beginning of the season when we were down in the relegation zone. Pradeep - good post mate. unfortunately nobody is allowed to express an opinion on here these days unless it's vile, negative and anti-wenger. I didnt start supporting Arsenal because of Wenger (I'm sure he probably didnt know where Arsenal was when I started supporting the club), and I'll still be here, supporting Arsenal way after he's left 9be it soon or much later). there are several obvious reasons why we have been in shambles this season and whatever those are (and we all know most of them), we will still finish in the top 4. if people dont like that, TOUGH! now, is top 4 the best we should be aiming for? NO. but given our situation this season, it'll do

Why do you not agree with the "Arsene Must Go" school of thought? Please explain your reasonings, I'd love to hear them as would many others I am sure.

Really good post. Its painful beyond belief to see the club sliding into mediocrity. Wenger sadly looks completely at sea and unable to halt the slide. The injuries and bad luck are just excuses.I've posted before that a top 4 finish is beyond this group and Wenger must know it. What I hope for is that the team sweat blood until the end of the season - show the kind of grit and determination that Swansea showed. If we're going to fail let's at least go down fighting and hope that there is a revolution either on the board or in the management structure for next season. Ps Newcastle sign Cisse ( 27 goals in german league) for 8m we sign Park for 6m how many goals for korea ?

your right pradeep we have heard it all before as far back as three seasons we will learn from our mistakes we never do and never will we will continue to make the same mistakes over and over again. Why? the answer is very simple its the coaching or rather the lack of it in the right areas or again it could be very simply the players are useless and haven't the brains to learn.

Nothing has been learnt by the board, the manager and fans of the rose tinted glasses variety, about buying quality defenders for our suspect defence in the last 5 years. I do not expect anything to change unless aliens attack earth and beam up all French nationals

Never mind guys, the full unadulterated story will all be revealed in AWs autobiography. It wont be long! We re all repeating the same comments on different posts on the same issues and subject matter. Im tired and its pointless really. There might be a beating v Utd on Sunday, i wouldnt write Villa s chances off of tipping us out of the FAC and the Spuds winning at Arsenal either. That could be the catalyst for change. Painful for us, but change nontheless. We'll see.

no one will buy our overpaid players that we want to get rid of. untill their contracts run down there will be no replacements. the young players may form a base for a new team but it looks like a few years in the wilderness until this is sorted.but you never know maybe we will win the cl this year!

Yes some players coming back will make a difference but that just backs up the argument of most of us on here the squad isn't good enough.AW has had years to reshape it he hasn't same flaws, same excuses for players failing to do the basics again & again. The stadium move has been about increasing profits with the least investment in the team congratulations for nothing more than asset stripping. The team should come out on the pitch to something more suited to the club's ambition or obvious lack of it my suggestion is 'Road to nowhere' by Talking Heads.

All this stems from a poor summer in the transfer window. We all knew how important it was. Yet the Club dithered over the sales of Cesc and Nasri before conducting business all too late in the wake of the destruction at Old Trafford. The penny pinching ways have finally caught up with us and despite a 5 game straight winning streak in the mid autumn, the lack of striking options and general quality coming fro mthe bench was always going to hit home. As it is we've started our season collapse 2 months earlier than normal and we all know wenger won't be buying anyone this month. But don't worry we will post an enormous profit for the year end accounts of around £60m. Gazidis will remind us for the 3rd year running our club is not about profits, but about growing revenue to invest in the playing squad. Absolute tosh. Our club is all about profits and nothing else. Well that will bite next year to the tune of £30m of lost Champions League revenue

Off the field, The Business is in the top 5 in the world in terms of value. On the pitch, The Arsenal team has been allowed to regress into being somewhere between 4th - 7th at domestic level, never mind globally. It's clear to me what The Business consider to be an acceptable standard in each area.

Anyone who thinks Wenger is the man to take arsenal forward is an idiot. I challenge any akb including the author of this piece to give me a reason why he is. And your not allowed to run off the same tired old **** about what happened ten years ago. Don't get me wrong, the current board and the leeches that were behind this money making scheme called the stadium move, are equally to blame. But we are pretty much stuck with them. At least give us a manager who can get the best out of the players we have. Probably work out cheaper for them too.

Totally agree a year with the Europa league may cause something to click in Wengers head that change is good and might buy some players or think about stepping down because a club like us should be im the champions league every year, but, if a year or two out of it encourages us to make sure we qualify in subsequent years then as fans I think we should grit our teeth and bear it. Up the Arsenal!!

Two points to pick up on in there. Firstly, "they (spurs) also have a strict wage-structure and a smaller stadium" - makes you wonder why the hell we lift Highbury really. Spurs haven't actually been that far behind us since the move to the E******s, and now there is no doubt that they are well ahead of us. Secondly, "I have calculated that we can't actually lose any more games this season to have a chance of automatic Champions League qualification" - why did you bother doing that? There are at least, AT LEAST another 5 nailed-on defeats yet this season. I agree with the overak sentiment that a wake-up call is needed, but I doubt very much that the Europa League (if we are lucky!) will be viewed as a failure by the club. As has been posted on here before, no doubt the club will spin 6th/7th place as "like a trophy", given the way we started the season. Whatever happenen to my Arsenal?......

Oh yes we missed Arteta we could have done with another performance like he gave at Fulham! a sub from Everton is now our saviour basically we spent millions on an out and out Denillson clone sideways backwards and very very slow with mid table players you get a mid table position we deserve a lot better.

"""Arsene must go" school of thought - which I do not agree with - will start again."" My god, do you just take the last 5 years and erase them from your memory, Wenger is the cause of and solution to Arsenals issues both on and off the pitch, cause of by staying in his managerial overlord position, and solution to by doing the decent thing by leaving before he is eventually hounded out, personally id like to see the hounded out, it would be just rewards for a man that has brough so much misery to so many for the last 5 years!!

Question for the author: If we don't finish in the top 4 - which as you say is very likely - will you still think Wenger should stay on?

    Jan 18, 2012, 12:09 #17159

We have currently conceeded a staggering 25 goals away from home. That is more than any other team!! With this sort of form, the idea of finishing the season in the top four is totally out of the question. Among Sunday's shambles at Swansea was the worrying sight of Wenger sitting all alone in the dugout. He looked like a man bereft of ideas. Is this the same person that once led us to such glorious achivements in the past? They were great times Arsene, but sadly I think your time is up.
