Djourou: Contract extended until 2015

Not good enough. The problem is, how many times have we said that this season, and the three or four past, about the Arsenal sides that have failed badly on the big occasions? The famous Barcelona win aside last year, we were spanked in both away-legs at the Nou Camp, have been soundly walloped by Manchester United in the semis a few years back and of course were pummelled on Wednesday night by a pretty good if not spectacular AC Milan side.

I raised more than an eyebrow at the team selection in the San Siro. It seemed very narrow and unbalanced in midfield; the lack of width exposed our full-backs while our central defence was left exposed by a very poor midfield that failed to protect them. As long as Wenger is in charge, this club will continue to have nights like this, as we can no longer compete against the best teams because he retains a stubborn faith in average players. Why was Chamberlain on the bench? Was it not obvious that Rosicky, Arteta and Ramsey are too similar?

The signs have been there since the start of our European journey this season. Udinese was sweaty-bum backs-to-wall stuff, Olympiakos had more than a hatful of chances at the Emirates, while Dortmund and Marseille dominated us on their own turfs. Incidentally, it was a surprise that we managed to get four points from those two games. Not good enough.

And, of course, it is February, which means we have a central defensive crisis. I think that this is the third such in as many seasons. The thought of Djourou playing for the remainder of the campaign alongside Vermaelen, who suddenly and very worryingly seems publicly fed up, makes me shudder. If I had a choice, I would recall Bartley from Rangers and let him have a chance in the side - he deserves a shot ahead of Djourou, who has had so many more opportunities than his ability warrants. But of course Wenger, being Wenger, will bring Bartley back from Rangers (as they cannot pay his wages) and stick him in the reserves.

If RvP ever needed an excuse to leave, Wednesday evening was all the reason he required, and any self-respecting fan would not begrudge such a talent moving on somewhere else and having the opportunity to pick up some silverware. Henry tried when he came, much to his credit, but the Vieiras and Pires of the past, great Arsenal sides have been replaced by lightweight players who look to pass sideways. Wenger was right, the performance was a disgrace, but he chose the team that was so ill-prepared and out of its depth.

As March comes, so does our usual Spring collapse, and this looks very much on the cards. Away to Sunderland, who will be desperate for revenge in the FA Cup, come Saturday evening it could very well be eight years without a trophy....the fans deserve better - this club needs a change.

(Ed’s note – The Gooner Gambling Scheme will return next week, due to the odds on the Sunderland FA Cup game not being suited to a guaranteed profit, and as regular followers know, we don’t gamble, we play the odds using the bookies’ promos to ensure a return whatever the outcome)

Why doesnt the online gooner start a petition, put it on fb and present Gazidis with the results, it would need to ask one question in essence " Trophys or Profits" the forementioned mr gazidis has already gone on record as saying change can only be brought about by the supporters, he could then hardly ignore a petition representing thousands asking for change, how about it Online Gooner ?

We need to get Kroenke to sell to Usmanov because, Kroenke will never invest a huge amount of money into any of his sports teams. Kroenke will not speculate to accumulate and will stick to the safety net of Arsene Wenger because he knows that no other decent manager will now want to come in to sort this mess out without serious financial backing

1.Have Arsenal FC admitted that Djourou's contract has been extended? It seems so far just to be rumours from Switzerland. 2.I agree with virtually all of the postings but please CanadaGooner don't include VP and say" if he leaves someone else will step up" . Like someone else stepped up when Cesc left? Without VP and especially his goals we would be in a relegation battle and when he does leave ,as surely he will,we will be in dire trouble unless a new manager brings in new players.

Trying to put aside ( hard i know ) the result, poor tactics and overall technique amongst all involved the saddest aspect was the effort and not bothered attitude that resonated at the end, words after mean nothing about how poor we played/how milan performed. Where has the pride in playing for the club gone ? The following players while some not being great technically all put a shift in and never hid even when all was not going to plan Armstrong,Parlour,Talbot,Robson and Hollins with apologies to any omissions (you can add others for sure ? ). The club have run out of time to carry passengers and we as fans have surely ran out of patience with many of our well rewarded players who have little pride and don,t appear bothered.

With acknowledgement to Peter Finch and the 1976 film “Network”….. You’ve had enough? You don’t know what to do? You are uncertain how to register your frustration? I don't have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. There's nobody who seems to know what to do, and there's no end to it. We know things are bad - worse than bad, They're crazy! All I know is that first you've got to get mad! I want you to get MAD! So at every home game until things change, I want all of you to get up out of your seats. I want you to get up and yell: "I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!” Things have got to change. But first, you've gotta get mad!... You've got to ignore those too timid to say anything, and shout, "I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!” Make the club take notice. Vocalise your dis-satisfaction, for no apparent reason get up out of your seats and say it, shout it, yell it: "I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!”

Change is needed in the board room and in the dressing room, whether or not wenger has the money or not when he has spent it he has well and truely ****ed up! He spends 8 mill on a cb that not only is too slow for the premier league and just all round **** but he apparently had reconstructive surgery on his ankle just before we signed him! And with our injury record, apparently wenger is very intelligent!!!! Well saying that he manages to keep his 7 mil a year job even though hes not very good at it.

The giving of a 2 year contract to a rubbish defender like Djourou tells you everything you need to know about Arsenal 2012.Ferguson has signed some dodgy players over the years but how long have they lasted after he found out they were crap.Djourou is from the Stephanov school of defending so we keep him for another 2 years.Mark my words we will offer permanant crock Diaby a 5 year extension next. You think im joking we gave long term deals to Almunia Denilson Bender and Vela didnt we?We want our club back now Wenger stop using it as your plaything

Well said sparksy you have hit the nail on the head. Remember the Terry Neill / Don Howe debacle in the early 1980s. It wasn't until the fans were getting at each other in the North Bank that the Board finally got off it's arse and gave Neill the boot. How long is this pathetic episode going to run? Wenger was the man once but its now obvious to all that he is a busted flush. GO.

The saddest thing for me is that i expect this in every big game now, you just need to look at the team sheet. Walcotts not a winger, he's got no skill and cant cross but he is fast so why aint wenger ever tried him upfront with RVP? Its like michael owen being played on the wing for his whole career. And as for Djourou, well...i just dont get it. He even gives cygan, senderos, stepanovs, squillaci and silvestre a run for their money, what an illustrious list of defenders!!!

I am absolutley livid that Djourou has been given a new contract at the club. The guy is utterly useless. I just looked on the Arsenal website and their is a news story about Djourou with the headline 'We must demonstrate our quality'. What the hell would he know about quality? Well done Arsene - another duffer tied to the club for another 3 years on god-knows how much a week. By the way, I shan't be contributing to his pay packet as I have decided to put my hard earned cash to better use rather than getting ripped off to pay through the nose to watch a very average team. As they say - put up or shut up!

even my swiss friends think Djourou is useless. For me Senderos was actually better.. we are a laughing stock lets face it. I can see us getting spanked at least another couple of times before this season is out. For me THE TIPPING POINT was how i watched us lose against BMHAM. not the result but the how. too casual. a cup meant too little to whinger. upsetting and was a taste of what has 12 months on happened

Comments on the starting line up are fickle - if the ox had started...etc...etc, it would have not made any difference to the outcome - to begin with, arguably the best back four started and they were ripped to shreds from the word go. People can say what they like about the BFG, but this season the defence has looked better with him then without him. The pairing of Kos and TV does not work. The goalkeeper is also starting to look shakey - the midfield is too much of the same - but having said that, the team should not perform as badly as that - what does a manager say whilst a performance like that is going on in front of him - all i could do was shake my head whilst Ramsey, Arteta, Song and Rosicky passed the ball across the field from one to the other. To make things worse once they had passed the ball they stood on the same spot. I can't believe Wenger expected that from them?

Yes we do need a change, but the very things that needs to change (the board and the manager who are responsible for what happens on and off the pitch)will not remove themselves voluntarily. The board will only sack Wenger if they feel that their own self interest (ie the value of their stake in the club) is under significant threat. Lets assume that the key player here is Kroenke. He would need to feel very worried that his stake is declining in value. On face value, Arsenal are a big English club with a new stadium, managable debts, profitability and a reasonable brand. This could of course change when we fail to get into the CL (Im certain we will end up 6th or 7th)but we will still record a profit as RVP's departure will secure us the income loss from CL. So Stan will stay cool for a year and wait and see what happens next. We will see revenue loss as ticket sales decline and corporate revenue declines so that may raise some alarm bells for him. But he does not strike me as the sort of operator who makes sudden ruthless decisons like Abramovich. So failure this year will not see Wenger pushed out. I think that if we see 2 or 3 more years of failure to achieve CL football and no trophies then that will make an impact. We are running out of top quality stars to sell after RVP. At some point Stan has to make a decision based on material self interest. Im just really surprised that a businessman like him cannot see that he could make his stake more valuable by investing in change on the pitch and in the dug out. He would only have succeeded in business by being ruthless. He could make more money by politely offering Wenger a role on the board, bringing in a new coach and getting 3 or 4 good players in, paid for largely by getting rid of 5 or 6 of our very poor players. We dont have to spend like City. 50 to 60m is not beyond our reach. But Im affraid that we should give up on seeing change anytime soon. Its going to have to get a lot worse before our owners and manager wake up!So get used to more misery and failure. The only possible alternative is if Wenger out of self pride decides to quit because he can see that he is making a fool of himself and he no longer has anyone's support in the stands or in his playing staff. I cant see a player revolt at Arsenal. The good ones with sense push off and the ordinary ones remain and can earn really well for not really delivering and the manager lets them so why the need for any revolution.

"if RVP ever needed an excuse to leave"?: what nonsense, he's part of the same team. If he wants to leave, he can pi** right off! The team as a whole is a let-down. Same as when Fabregas moaned about wanting to leave: was it not his lazy back-pass that screwed us over against Barcelona? I havent got the patience for all this molly-cuddling of our players. If RVP leaves, we'll only be slightly worse than we are now, and someone else will step up. We have so many players who shouldnt be playing at this level of football and for some strange reasons, the fans still expect some miraculous results. Ox is a trainee, and good as he is, he shouldnt be anywhere near a champions league game, not yet; Djourou should be playing for Wolves or Blackburn and same for players like Rosicky, chamakh and walcott. They're simply not good enough for a team like Arsenal; but they are the players we have right now, and we have to encourage them to see if we can get something out of them (Miraculously!!!); so, ENOUGH of all the criticisms. Wednesday's result was no surprise: MOVE ON; come on you gunners!!!!! Let's see if we can get past Sunderland at the weekend (unlikely, and even if we do, it will be a timid loss to Liverpool at the next stage). But, we are where we are, and unless someone comes with a complete overhaul, which is unlikely, this is what we have and we should support them as best we can. For those with seasons tickets refusing to go to the game, kindly email me and some of my friends who have been waiting to buy a seasons ticket will gladly buy them off you: I will await your emails. Thanks! The rest of us will get on with supporting the club. we have a squad of donkeys, and that's that.

Vip you are right, but you don’t go far enough. What is needed is an almost TOTAL clearout! There is nothing right about Arsenal FC at the moment, from the man who owns the club to the people working in the Box Office, In an ideal world the Board, the Chief Executive, the Manager, most of the coaching and scouting staff, ALL of the medical staff, and 50% of the current squad should be replaced. The Owner should be replaced too, but while that is probably impracticable for the moment, there is absolute no reason why the rest of the cull should not be carried out immediately!

Whatever we fans keep posting in forums nothing is going to change when we have stubborn AW . Its time for Local fans to start protesting . Yes there will be some calling protesters as plastic fans . Those who think fans should always support a team and should never point the mistakes about boss and board should remember that "there is no individual bigger than club". A change is always needed at some part of life. Please stop calling yourself as great fans and others as plastic fans. Its already 7 years , which is about 10% of a fans lifetime.Kindly do stay united and protest for a change.Already we couldn't attract world class players , this isn't good for a club like Arsenal. Please don't be satisfied with once in blue moon performance from this current squad and keep trusting AW. I have AW in my inspirational people list too, that doesn't mean he can walk away doing mistakes every time .Fans can change anything,Do it before its too late.

Peter Wain - sorry Peter but Wenger has become a bad manager and we can't keep making excuses for him by blaming Gazedis and co. I am not saying I like them any more than I do Wenger, but Wenger is the manager, the man who decides who we buy and sell, the man who decides which players to keep and what tactics to employ. A new manager would be like a breath of fresh air, would give us fans some hope for the future and most of all would tell our under-performing wasters to shape up or ship out. On that note I must finish by saying that I can not believe Wenger has given Djourou a new contract until 2015.

  28. Andrew Cohen

    Feb 17, 2012, 14:14 #18818

The Telegraph reports today that AW had an angry confrontation with the players, blaming them for Milan. I didn't think that it was possible for him to go down in my estimation but he just has. These are young men who have been doing what they have been told to do. The manager is all important and the reason that we know that, (apart from the fact that it is blindingly obvious) is because Alex Ferguson says so. The manager must be removed and the only people who are going to do it are the supporters. Everyone must go and make their displeasure felt. 90 minutes of "you don't know what you're doing" should do the trick. This is consistent with supporting the team. It is not just us who need to be set free. It's the team as well, and ultimately, Mr Wenger himself.

Totally agree with you Sparksy. It's easy to sit behind a keyboard venting our anger, but nobody from the club will ever see it so it's like pissing in the wind. Proper action i.e protests is needed. John Gee.. Where do the likes of Pires and Bergkamp exist? What a stupid comment. They exist in the likes of Eden Hazard & Mario Goezte. Young creative footballers who are the next generation. But we all know that Arsenal like to reward losers with long contracts who have no hunger or desire, so we won't see the likes of them any time soon.

The caption underneath the photgraph says it all - Djourou "Contract extended till 2015". That will complete a decade at the club. Arsenal's longest serving foreign player. It isn't the board of directors that decide they want to award the likes of Vela, Fabianski, Bendtner and Djourou long term contracts. Do you really think Gazidis and Kroenke tell Wenger exactly which players to retain and which to sell ? Arsene Wenger has created a cosy club of players that hang off his every word, and are living the dream of playing for a top European club when no other would touch them. I seriously don't think there is another club in the top half of the PL that would consider signing Johan Djourou. So what the hell is this guy doing at the club for 7 years and with a contract extension that will take that to a decade???

Djourou getting a new contract sums this club up, shows us in one fell swoop why were dropping like a stone. We have consistantly sold our best players and replaced them with average at best, you can only get away with it so long. This has been coming, and now we need a complete overhaul but will it happen? Its not totally wengers fault but he's been the front man, spinning the boards lies, he has no dignity otherwise he would have come out with the truth a while back and left. It is no use changing the manager if the policy regarding investment in the first team squad remains as before. What we need is a change at the top. Wenger has not become a bad manager overnight but people above him such as Gazidis and Kroenke are not up to the mark. Why the yank bought a club in which he has no interest and no appreciation of how a football has to run is beyond me. Both of them should go today they are dragging the club down and this cannot be tolerated.

Barking up the wrong tree mate. Nothing to do with what players are selected or what formation they are played in. This has to do with a deep rooted problem that has been allowed to fester by Arsene. Namely that Arsene has coached/ brought players who lack or have have had something knocked out of them. It it's not rocket science it's something that has been repeated time and time again by on these messageboards by us prols and 'professional' pundits. There are many words for it,an they have been used countless times. Lack of character, physical bravery, mental bravery, scared of responsibilty, pampered, indulged,no determination, grit, easily bullied, indifferent etc etc. But Martin Keown summed the current Arsenal team up in one word in the Mail today.Passive.If you get time look up the definition,it sums up the squad in one word. And it's worth saying again. If Djourou plays for Arsenal so do I. Nothing ,but nothing less that winning the FA Cup this season is acceptable this season.

Yes this club does need change and now. But what it also needs is for the supporters to stop the writing on forums and start some proper protests in and/or outside the ground so they know we are putting the pressure on. All this chat is not getting us anywhere really.........
