Three Things We Learned after Arsenal proved North London Is Red

Ian Mills analyses Arsenal's stirring comeback victory over Spurs to win the North London derby

Arsenal came from a goal down to win the North London Derby and narrow Liverpool’s lead to four points, albeit having played one game more.

Here are three things that stood out for me, writes Ian Mills

1 - North London is Red –

When Son’s deflected effort put our bitterest of rivals into the lead it felt as though it might be yet another of ‘those’ nights as upto that point it had been almost total domination for Arsenal.

However, the key here was a quick reply, and we found one albeit fortuitously from a corner that should have been a goal kick.

That said, given the litany of dreadful referring decisions we have been on the end of so far this season I am certainly not going to pass up one of the very few calls that have gone our way.

While our equaliser went down as an own goal by Solanke, Gabriel once again showed his prowess at corners and morally it felt like his goal.

Our winner arrived soon after via Leandro Trossard. We missed further chances to increase our lead after the interval as Declan Rice shot straight at Antonin Kinsky and Odegaard shot wide when well placed.

However, this was a well-deserved victory, and a much needed shot in the arm after successive domestic cup defeats. It also enabled us to complete a double over an opponent for the first time this season at the first attempt and wins never come sweeter than over our old foes.

Sol Campbell’s superb Google Pixel advert had hit the headlines earlier in the week and had delighted Gooners everywhere whilst simultaneously infuriating Spurs fans and I am sure several Arsenals fans allowed themselves another fair few views after this result.

As Sol says ‘big moves pay off’.

2 - Trossard gets a much-needed confidence boost –

I am a paid-up member of the Leandro Trossard fan club (he is a great example of the kind of brilliant addition that can be found in the January transfer window) and after several underwhelming displays his winner here will hopefully give him the confidence to go on and score a lot more.

You can question Antonin Kinsky slightly given that he got a hand to the shot however I am inclined to give Leo his props for this one.

Nothing like a winner in the North London Derby to remind everyone of your quality. It is even more important given as this was yet another game that largely passed Raheem Sterling by.

3 - MLS is looking the best –

There are times when you have to pinch yourself to remind yourself of just how good some of our young players are.

Myles Lewis-Skelly continues to flourish at left back and you have to start to wonder that even if Ricardo Califiori was not so injury prone if the Italian would get in ahead of our latest Hale End Starlet.

Not only did he play superbly against first Kulusevski but then also Johnson, he also loves playing in this team.

He become our youngest starter in a North London Derby since Cesc Fabregas almost two decades previously. When he was substituted late on, he enjoyed the acclaim of the crowd as he responded by asking them to continue to raise the atmosphere.

To cap it call, he was awarded the Man of the Match. He clearly has a very bright future ahead of him.
