Arsenal Eye £80m Alternative to Isak
The noise around Arsenal hunting Sporting Lisbon marksman Viktor Gyokeres refuses to go away
With Newcastle United memorably lifting the 2025 Carabao Cup when breaking a domestic trophy drought of more than seven decades, Magpies striker Alexander Isak once again showed his class, grabbed the second as Eddie Howe's side beat Liverpool 2-1 in the showpiece final last weekend.
However, the 25-year-old Swede's price tag rose again on the back of an excellent display, meaning that Arsenal would have to break the bank to secure the services of the player they spurned in the summer of 2022, preferring instead to sign Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City.
With the player understood to be valued at more than £120m, the price may be too much for Arsenal, despite their desperaete need for a top quality centre forward.
Which means that the North Londoners are now turning their attentions once again, to an international colleague of Isak's, Viktor Gyokeres.
No player has scored more than the Sweden international in 2024 having banged in a whopping 61 times for club and country the calendar year - 13 more goals than Erling Haaland.
The 26-year-old fit the bill with the club looking to bolster their squad in a bid for a serious tilt at the Premier League title next term.
Gyokeres, who combines speed and power with deadly finishing, fired Sporting to the Primeira Liga title last season after scoring 43 goals in all competitions.
And despite being outgunned during Arsenal's majestic 5-1 thrrashing of a post-Ruben Amorim era, the bustling forward showed what he is capable of in early November after scoring a hat-trick against City in a 4-1 Champions League victory.
With Gyokeres boasting a release clause of around £85m, the option is there for Arsenal to sign him - but they know they could face competition from former boss Amorim, who will be aiming to strength his struggling Manchester United side this summer.
