Report

Classic semi-final play this evening as Manchester City came out all guns blazing after a loss at the weekend. A first half strike from Fowler saw them lead 1-0 at half time. Arsenal found more energy in the second half, winning and scoring a penalty to equalise. Big night for van Domselaar as City’s strikes had her diving all over the goal, but a great penalty save denied City’s attempt to go 2-1 up. A last minute winner sees City going through to the final. Wasn’t Arsenal’s day today.

Player ratings - Arsenal vs Manchester City, Subway Women’s League Cup Semi-Final

Daphne van Domselaar

Confident saves of powerful strikes from City’s strikers, amazing penalty save to keep Arsenal equal, great play throughout. Well deserved player of the match award. Without her saves, the scoreline would have looked totally different.

8.5/10

Emily Fox

Speedy and dominating runs down the right, inaccurate crosses often leading to turnovers, but in general effective  at picking up the ball at the back.

6.5/10

Lotte Wubben-Moy

Great physicality in her second start under Renée Slegers, great run down the whole pitch to create an attempt on goal

7/10

Leah Williamson

Took a while to relax into the game with long balls often going straight to City. Good scanning of the pitch to produce some excellent passes once she found her way into the game, good through balls which lead to scoring opportunities.

7/10

Steph Catley

Not many contributions to the game apart from a couple of passes out from the back. Subbed off in the 74th minute.

6/10

Mariona Caldentey

Excellent, confident shot from the spot to give Arsenal the equaliser, great play in the midfield and effective at winning the ball back under pressure.

7.5/10

Frida Maanum

Didn’t get into the game as well today, looked uncomfortable in position and a slight lack of speed getting up the pitch to be in the box for crosses.

6/10

Lia Wälti

Good press and won the ball back in high pressure situations, held onto the ball well in tight spaces. Smooth and calm  in transition.

8/10

Alessia Russo

Good hold up play as is always the case, lack of action in front of the goal this evening however.

6.5/10

Stina Blackstenius

Run down the left and some contact from Knaak resulting in a penalty, once again caught in offside positions when not necessary which was a shame. But some good runs forward throughout.

7/10

Kyra Cooney-Cross

Great turns on the ball, driving through multiple City players at one time. Slightly kept out of the game by City after her strong performance at the weekend.

6.5/10

Katie McCabe (Sub, ‘73)

Not a lot of contribution from her this evening, possibly came on too late, good to see her back from her two match ban.

6/10

Caitlin Foord (Sub, ’73)

Good hold up in the corner when surrounded by City players, and a lot of speed on the wing, but not too many meaningful moments in her short spell on the pitch.

6/10

Subs not used:

Manuela Zinsberger, Laia Codina, Amanda Ilestedt, Jenna Nighswonger, Katie Reid, Rosa Kafaji, Beth Mead
