Arsenal turn attention back to £70m striker
Sporting open to £70m Gyokeres deal with Arsenal
Arsenal have turned their attention back to a long-term transfer target after being rebuffed by Newcastle.
The Gunners had been considering making a bid for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak - until Eddie Howe's Magpies made it clear to the North Londoners that the coveted Swedish striker's buyout clause would be a whopping £150m this coming January.
Put off by such an exorbitant price, Mikel Arteta has now turned his attentions back to Viktor Gyokeres.
It is understood that Sporting Clube de Portugal are willing to sell Viktor Gyokeres for around £70m.
Gyokeres' has a contract with the Lisbon giants until 2028 - which also contains his release clause, with Championship side Coventry City set to receive 10% of any profit Sporting receive above the price they paid for Gyokeres.
Ironically Dan Ashworth - the former sporting director of Manchester United until he was sacked by INEO boss and minor Manchester United shareholder Jim Ratcliffe - was the man who sold Gyokeres to Coventry for just £1m in 2021 from former club Brighton.
Gyokeres, the coveted 26-year-old Sweden striker netted a hat-trick in Sporting's 4-1 win over Manchester City in the Champions League this month in Ruben Amorim's last but one game in charge before joining Manchester United last month.
However, Gyokeres failed to impress during Arsenal's rampant 5-1 Champions League victory over Sporting last month, and it was believed the Gunners lost interest in the bustling striker - until today.
Gyokeres has netted 18 goals in 16 league games for Sporting, providing three assists.
