Prologue

Another North London Derby is upon us, and this one promises to be a spectacle. Arsenal host Tottenham at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday and in true AWFC style, over 55,000 tickets have been sold, marking another incredible attendance for the Women’s Super League.

But beyond the numbers, this is a rivalry that carries weight, history, and passion – one that Arsenal have dominated but never take lightly.

The Occasion

The North London Derby has grown in significance as the WSL continues to expand, and Arsenal’s record attendance figures underline the surge in popularity.

With more than 55,000 expected in N5, the Gunners will have a fierce home advantage as they look to continue their strong form under Renée Slegers. Arsenal won their away fixture earlier this season when they beat Spurs 3-0, and will be looking to put in a similar performance on Sunday, and keep North London red.

While Spurs have often struggled in this fixture, they did claim a 1-0 victory over Arsenal early last season.

Head coach Robert Vilahamn has spoken about the emotions of that win and will hope his side can replicate that feat. However, playing away at the Emirates is an entirely different challenge.

Team News

For Arsenal, the squad remains largely the same, with some players potentially returning depending on final training sessions. The big question is whether Chloe Kelly will make her second debut for the club after rejoining on loan in the January window. The England international has settled in quickly, and her attacking quality could provide another dynamic to Arsenal’s frontline if she is included.

Victoria Pelova is also making progress in her return to full fitness, having featured for the Under-21s against Manchester United this week. However, Slegers and her team are managing her load carefully, meaning that inclusion in Sunday’s squad remains uncertain.

For Spurs, Eveliina Summamen will be absent, but Ella Morris and Drew Spence are available for selection again. Vilahamn has emphasised the importance of collective defensive discipline against Arsenal’s wealth of attacking options and will be hoping his side can remain compact for long periods.

What to Expect

Arsenal will be aggressive from the off – something that Slegers has spoken about frequently in her press conferences. A fast start was key against Manchester City recently, and she will want the same intensity from her team here. With the Emirates’ pristine pitch suiting Arsenal’s technical game, expect them to dominate possession and look to exploit space down the flanks.

Tottenham, meanwhile, will have prepared for this game and will aim to frustrate Arsenal by limiting space in the midfield. They know they will be up against it, but Vilahamn has insisted his side will look for opportunities to impose themselves in possession where possible.

With the Emirates packed, and the rivalry at full tilt, Arsenal will be eager to send a statement to their fans. Slegers has spoken about the deep connection between the team and supporters – Sunday presents another chance to strengthen that bond.
