While some of the Premier League’s major rivalries can often be played on tenterhooks, with both sets of managers setting up incredibly cautious, Chelsea vs Arsenal rarely disappoints.
It’s an especially interesting fixture annually for the neutral, as just two fixtures have ended goalless in their last 20 meetings.
After a period of dominance for the Blues earlier this century, the pendulum has certainly swung back in the Gunners’ favour in recent years.
Mikel Arteta has transformed Arsenal from mediocrity to regular Premier League contenders, and Chelsea just haven’t been able to compete with their London rivals through a state of transition.
Just one win in their last 10 outings against the Gunners is dire reading for the Stamford Bridge faithful.
To make matters worse, Arteta’s men look likely to inflict more pain in west London as they are the favourites for those looking for a Chelsea vs Arsenal bet.
Whether or not Enzo Maresca can out-master Arteta remains to be seen, but ahead of the clash, let’s take a look back at five of the best fixtures from the last 10 years.
Arsenal 5-0 Chelsea - 2024
You’ve only got to go back to April for the first matchup on our list, as Arsenal ran Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea ragged at the Emirates.
Leandro Trossard gave the Gunners an early lead after just four minutes, but it was in the second half that Arsenal put the Blues to the sword.
Ben White and former Chelsea Champions League winner Kai Havertz both netted braces, with the latter’s two goals a particularly bitter pill to swallow.
Chelsea 4-1 Arsenal – 2019
The 2019 Europa League is one of the few times Chelsea fans have enjoyed a victory over Arsenal in this time frame, with the Blues winning 4-1 at the Baku National Stadium.
Chelsea fans knew this would be Eden Hazard’s final appearance for the club, and the Belgian starred in the empathic victory.
After a goalless first half, former Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud opened the scoring, and Pedro followed up before Hazard netted a brace either side of an Alex Iwobi consolation.
Chelsea 3-2 Arsenal – 2018
Marcos Alonso was Chelsea’s saviour in this five-goal thriller at Stamford Bridge back in 2018, setting up Pedro for the Blues’ opening goal before Alvaro Morata doubled the advantage inside 20 minutes.
Arsenal hit back through Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Iwobi before half-time. But Chelsea took control in the second half and Alonso made a breakthrough late on for the win.
"I enjoyed the match for 75 minutes," Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri said. "The other 15 minutes it was better to smoke, I think. It was a wonderful match for everybody but those 15 minutes were horrible.
Chelsea 6-0 Arsenal – 2014
A game that just about still makes it into the last decade, Chelsea’s 6-0 win over Arsenal in 2014 will go down in Premier League history as one of the most memorable fixtures ever, but not because of the one-sided scoreline…
Instead, it’s due to referee Andre Marriner sending off Kieran Gibbs instead of the actual culprit, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, for a deliberate handball.
Jose Mourinho’s men raced into a 2-0 lead with goals from Samuel Eto’o and Andre Schurrle before the infamous incident, and Hazard, Oscar and a certain Mohamed Salah added to the rut.
Chelsea 2-4 Arsenal – 2022
In another chaotic match at Stamford Bridge, Arsenal came out on top with a 4-2 win over Thomas Tuchel’s side.
Eddie Nketiah opened the scoring for the visitors in the 13th minute, but Timo Werner struck back, and Cesar Azpilicueta quickly cancelled out Emile Smith Rowe’s strike as the two teams traded blows.
There was nothing to separate them in the football betting at half-time, but Arsenal took control in the second 45 minutes.
Nketiah netted again almost 15 minutes in, and Bukayo Saka put the game to bed from the penalty spot in the 92ndminute.
