Arsenal striker Alessia Russo told the Gooner Fanzine she is “always trying to do more” at training sessions to improve her goalscoring.

Russo has netted in six consecutive Women’s Super League games under Renée Slegers, and revealed that she is constantly looking to level up her ability in front of goal.

“I think the strength and conditioning coaches and staff will tell you that I'm a bit of a pain when it comes to finishing,” Russo remarked ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Chelsea.

“Because I'm always trying to make us do more. But Renée's brought in this new little finishing competition that we do every now and again that is a nice bit of fun at the end of training.

We all enjoy it, and it’s nice just having that there and as a bit of competition as well.”

Renée Slegers told The Gooner after Arsenal’s 4-0 Subway Cup quarter-final win over Brighton on Wednesday that Kyra Cooney-Cross, who found the top corner with a thumping finish against the Seagulls, had also been putting the goals away in the Gunners training games.

“Yeah, I just said I'm glad it didn't fall to her left foot,” joked Russo. “It fell to her right foot!”

“It was a great finish. I stood right by it and I watched it fly and she couldn't have hit it any sweeter. She's really good at shooting outside and in those ranges of the box and we encourage her to do it more because we know what she's done and she's done it for Australia too.

“So as players, when you know that your teammates got strength like that, you're trying to encourage them to do it as often as they can and yeah, I'm glad she hit it against Brighton.”
