Renée Slegers and defender Steph Catley addressed the media ahead of Arsenal's Champions League clash against Bayern Munich tomorrow night at Meadow Park.
Same squad availability as Liverpool game
There are no new injury updates to report, with squad availability remaining unchanged from the Liverpool match.
Renée offers no hints about her future at the club
“In general I have very good communication with the club. They are working on it behind the scenes. I have nothing more to share.”
“I am desperate for the team to perform well and keep on performing well. I want to bring it back to the players. There’s been a shift in the mindset. They will stay together as a group and keep on pushing.”
“I’m thankful for the support because I was there to support the team, but I also got support back. We have had a strong togetherness. I’m very thankful for support from different directions.”
“That’s not up to us unfortunately. As a team we’re very happy right now, we’re getting results. I’ve not been knocking on doors, maybe Kim can do that” (Steph Catley on whether the players have been asking the hierarchy for Renée to stay)
Loud and Passionate Fans Always Present at Borehamwood
“I think we’re gonna play at Borehamwood and what’s positive is we’re so close to the fans. It’s a very intimate place.” (Renée)
“The cards have been dealt and that’s where we’re playing. We’ve played there for a long time, we’re good at playing there, we know it very well. The crowd there shows up in so many numbers, they’re just as loud and just as passionate. All of that is very helpful.” (Catley)
Renée comments on individual player performances
“She’s a very talented player, I think the whole squad is very intelligent. We give them the freedom to fill positions and combine with each other. Katie [McCabe] is a good example of that. She understands the game very well. She gets that freedom on the pitch, as do others.”
“We know that she came in as a 9 but we also know she’s good in the 10. Because of some experiments we did, she can also play on the wing. It depends on what you need in the game and how we want to get her qualities out. Alessia [Russo] is here as a 9 but she can play in different positions.”
Steph Catley on Her Newfound Centre-Back Role
“The amount of ground you’re covering. Mentally it’s a whole different game. It’s about reading the game, staying connected to everyone. Physically it’s less load for me. In a way I feel fresher going into games and I recover quicker. Ultimately whatever role the team needs me to play, I’m ready for it. Whatever the team needs, I’m prepared for.”
“At the moment, I’m being picked to play there and that builds confidence. I can get my positioning perfect and build a partnership with Leah and those around me.”
Focus on Improving Performance Following Previous Game Against Bayern
“Way too many goals conceded and a poor performance in general. It gives us a good opportunity now that we've worked on a lot of games in a row. We’ve kept clean sheets, we’re feeling confident. It’s going to be tough but we’re in a good place right now to take on the game. We want to finish top of the group. We’re going out there to win the game.” (Catley)
