New Year’s Day, Future Okay!

Despite picking out all the familiar problems, one correspondent believes things will turn out okay in 2006, in this piece received by us on 1st Janaury

New Year’s Day, Future Okay!

European Cup – on the way?

We enter the New Year with apprehension as our beloved club is at a big crossroads. How will the new stadium pan out, atmosphere, dereliction of loyalty to true Gooners and cost being big issues. Team: Henry will he stay or go? Youngsters, are they good enough? RVP, Reyes, yes, Flamini no (useless in front of goal, not ruthless enough Villa away and other games such as the friendly against Ajax). I'm sorry if I am going against the Wenger grain, he knows a lot more about football than me. But every Arsenal player should have a mean streak in front of goal. The likes of Cygan and now Flamini (who reminds me of Grimandi) will not win a Champs League, Premiership and FA Cup treble which is what I would like to see. If the red scum can achieve this surely we can.

As for the white scum, they are getting a little too close for comfort. Jol is blending a decent mix. They are still behind us in terms of trophies and youth, however the tables don't lie. I just hope if we are out of the top four and miss out on the Champs League that we don't do a Leeds. Do the board have contingency plans for this? Can they reassure us we won't go bust if we miss out on the Euro Cup for just one season whilst the youngsters become established. We have to play Liverpool and Scum U twice and we have lost six already.

Will we sign anyone in January or the summer and if so who? Ollie Dacourt from Roma would be nice. He is Vieira like and I recall him having a few close losing battles against our much missed midfield gladiator PV4. Although he is 30 he would do us for a couple of seasons. Dioup from Fulham may help us out. Other than this I cannot see anyone replacing PV4. Van Bommel is at Barca. Maybe Wenger will move KT28 into the middle and buy a new lot of centre backs. Campbell looks good for another couple of seasons. Senderos will make the grade despite a few errors, Drogba and Doncaster. TA was vulnerable as a youth wasn't he?

Gilberto, Fabs and Flamini are all defensive and only occasional attack minded midfielders. There is no-one who can run with the ball down the middle to give us a different attacking edge when the likes of the boring Bolton's and Chelsea's flood the midfield with five in the middle. First 20 minutes against Chelski was a worry, all the defenders looked scared. This would not have been the case if we had a player who is aggressive. Hleb tried to run through the Chelsea midfield but was not strong enough. None of the current crop is. We need a player who gets sent off a couple of times a season who the opposition physically fear. All the press used to whinge about our disciplinary record. It is better than being out-muscled as we are at the moment. We still have the most skilful, quickest players, the only thing missing is a little bit of aggression and nastiness.

As for Fergie saying we will never be bigger than those up north. We will see. I think Dein and co will show more patience with our man than the Glazers in a year or so. Keane has gone now and they are vulnerable. They could be on the slide soon. Maybe the redcurrant shirts are a distraction. I miss the red and white. The return will be a welcome sight next season. Although the club have put on a good show to recognise how upsetting it will be to leave Highbury. Even if we win a treble at Ashburton Grove, it would be tinged with sadness that it won't ever be Highbury.

Finally, I trust our manager. He knows what he is doing as I'm sure you'll all agree. Here's wishing all the supporters a noisy year at Highbury. Please get behind the team. Stop asking people to sit down when they are on their feet singing their hearts out for the lads. This is 90 minute war not theatre. The boys need to know that the opposition is surrounded by noise which is good natured but very hostile. You don't have to swear at the opposition to make your voice heard. Just get up and sing for the team that have given us immense pleasure.

Happy New Year (Champs League and FA Cup a certainty).
