New CEO’s first job will be to sort out Highbury Square

Thanks Ken Friar, now let’s get down to business

Gazidis – No shortage of matters in his in-tray

Right, early days and I’ll confess I’ve not done any research on Ivan Gazidis thus far. But what I have done is read between the lines of the Arsenal Supporters’ Trust statement on the club’s announcement of the new CEO. He starts the job in January and it can only be hoped that – as the Trust says – his expertise in player contract matters is called upon sooner rather than later.

Ken Friar is a club stalwart, but he’s been doing David Dein’s job for eighteen months and Keith Edelman’s for six. So six critical months with a 74-year-old covering two jobs. Is it any wonder that the club weren’t busy enough negotiating transfers to acquire the much-needed players to strengthen the defensive element of the first team squad?

Also like the broad hint about ticket prices not being raised again.

Anyhow, here’s the full AST statement, taken from their website

Arsenal Supporters’ Trust welcomes appointment of Ivan Gazidis

"This is a vital appointment at a time when Arsenal face challenging times on and off the field.

"The most pressing item in his in-tray is seeing through the completion of the Highbury Square property development in the face of the severe economic downturn.

"His experience of international sports marketing should help the club to grow its income stream at a time when there should clearly be no further increase in ticket prices for the hard pressed supporter.

"In the week when the French Presidency of the EU is seeking powers to control football to the potential detriment of Arsenal, Mr Gazidis will need to quickly build relationships in football and political corridors of power.

"We also note his experience in managing player contracts, a skillset we hope he will soon put to use at Arsenal.

"The Trust also recognises the role that Ken Friar has played as acting Managing Director and are grateful to him for the time he has given to working with us."
