Eboue and the domino effect

I felt embarrassed to be an Arsenal supporter

Eboue: Broken man

I was absolutely disgusted at the behaviour of some Arsenal supporters at the Wigan game yesterday. The way Eboue was subjected to an almost lynch mob mentality has no place in football.

It started with a misplaced pass being met with a few mutters from certain sections of the ground. These were supporters who unless Eboue had scored a hat trick with his first three touches were just waiting to jump on any mistake he made. Eboue actually did not start too badly - he even helped set up Adebayor when he hit the post.

Other Arsenal players had played plenty of misplaced passes but Eboue was not allowed the luxury of one. He has become the player to blame if things do not go our way. He missed the Villa and Man City games so it can't all be his fault. I must add that he is not my favourite player but is certainly a good squad player and I would never boo an Arsenal player.

He did start to make a few mistakes but you could see his head go down as the booing got louder with more people joining in. The last couple of mistakes he made I am sure were a direct result of the crowd as the pressure got to him. It had already become a nervous last fifteen minutes with the crowd anxious and plenty of other players failing to keep possession.

It was like a domino effect as more and more people joined in and you could see Eboue was a broken man. He looked totally destroyed as his departure was met with cheers. Wenger of course had no choice but to withdraw him, some of the supporters had seen to that.

So did any of this help Arsenal? Of course it did not. There is nothing wrong with shouting out in frustration on occasions when games are tense. What is not acceptable is booing an Arsenal player or directing abuse at Arsenal players. Today was one of the few times I felt embarrassed to be an Arsenal supporter. I hope in the cold light of day those supporters who booed feel suitably embarrassed.
