Eboué: Did barracking him help the team?

I don't care what anyone thinks of Emmanuel Eboué as a player, however bad his performance against Wigan was, the most striking performance was that of the fans. It's fine to have a go at the manager, the board or the team collectively. Between games, we should feel free to criticise individual players, that's part of what it is to be a football fan. And in exceptional circumstances (such as after Adebayor's greedy, two-faced behaviour in the summer) publicly slating a player at a game can be ok.

But barracking a player, whoever he is, because he makes mistakes on the field despite trying, is disgusting, counter-productive and embarrassing. All the thousands of morons did was to destroy Eboué's confidence and cause him to make more mistakes. It was like the behaviour of the Arsenal fans at an away game at Fulham a few years ago, when a very inexperienced Alexandre Song had a shocker and was similarly targeted by our own fans, something that led to him having to go out on loan to recover his confidence.

But forget about feeling sorry for Emmanuel Eboué. Barracking him does nothing to support the team and help them get the result we all wanted, quite the opposite. What would the other Arsenal players have thought about the fans' behaviour? Did it seem to help the team generally? Does anyone think it will make Fabregas or Sagna or Eduardo or Clichy or Ramsey or Wilshire or Vela think, "What a fantastic club this is, I must stay here"? And what about players of the future? I happened to be at the game with the son of a family friend who is an under-14s player at Chelsea but who remains a fanatical Gooner, and he was shocked to see the fans turn on one of their own players like this. I didn’t ask, but I wonder if a youngster like him would nurture dreams of playing in red and white having seen the Arsenal fans’ behaviour yesterday.

Most of those around me, in Block 1, had a go at Eboué, and celebrated when he was substituted. Could these w***ers not see what effect they had on the player? Eboué, a right-back and sometime right-midfielder, was filling in on the left, with the three players usually used there (Nasri, Walcott and Rosicky) all out. And he was playing for an hour, despite coming back from injury. And he played pretty satisfactorily until about 15 or 20 minutes from the end, at least in comparison with the rest of the team.

But as soon as Eboué made a mistake, our fans, our own f***ing fans, were onto him. From that point on, his confidence began to disappear, and a spiral of mistake, then boos, then mistake, then boos began, until Eboué had to be withdrawn. Some of us applauded Eboué as he went off, of course not because he played well, but to provide some balance to the rank behaviour of the many fans who had hounded him.

Over the past couple of years, plenty of Arsenal fans, some well informed, many who know nothing about the game, have criticised Eboué. I understand some of the criticisms, though I think they've been overdone. But almost all the critics have said they would not boo an Arsenal player, Eboué included, during a game.

Well, shame on all of you who hounded Eboué today. I thought our club was about class, but you lot showed precious little of that. You behaved like the nouveau scum fans at The Bridge.

The behaviour of those who leave the game early, either to get refreshments or to get an early train, has p***ed off many of us. And we have been famously quiet as a group of fans for many years. All of that, combined with today's behaviour, leaves me thinking that we have the worst fans in the Premiership. F***ing disgraceful.
