To Boo or Not to Boo

Are high prices the reason that ‘supporters’ now see fit to boo a player?

To Boo or Not to Boo

Eboue: Less recent fans have seen worse

I used to go to every Arsenal home game. This was a good few years ago mind, when we were at Highbury. I remember standing on the Clock End one fun Monday night getting beat by Wimbledon 1-nil while the North bank was being rebuilt. I remember sitting in the old North Bank watching us play Sheffield Wednesday and seeing row upon row of empty seats.

I was a soldier at the time and applied for and was accepted for a season ticket. I couldn't take it up as I was then posted to Germany. This was the early nineties at the tail end of George Graham's reign. We weren't a particularly good side at the time either, even taking into account Copenhagen in 94. I never booed any player. The thought never entered my head.

I cannot afford to go to many games now. I have three sons and the price is just astronomical. My eldest two are Junior Gunners but as I am just a red member by the time I can get a ticket the family enclosure is sold out, so I have to pay full price for them. However, we try to get to as many games as we can. I feel that a sizeable chunk of the fans today have absolutely no appreciation of what they are watching or how lucky they are.

I was astounded to hear the booing of Eboue against Wigan. Who on earth has enough money to waste on going to watch their team and then spend all afternoon booing their own players? Eboue had a bad game, sure. Name me a footballer on the planet who hasn't? What are other players going to think watching that? Who would want to sign for us knowing that they cannot count on the support of the crowd? How many of the current team woke up on Sunday morning and thought "Why am I bothering playing in front of people like these?"

To me the answer is simple and the answer is money. The prices are so high that the people who can afford to go to the games are the sort of people who complain at every opportunity about anything. They want to be entertained and will voice their displeasure at the merest sign of a setback. This is what you get with a corporate set up that we have now (no flags, singing section stuck out of the way in the corner).

These people are not supporters. What does the word "support" mean in the first place? If you say to someone in time of trouble "I'll support you", does that mean you can boo them when the going gets tough? Arsenal should stop selling tickets to away sides as a large chunk of our "supporters" may as well be sitting in the away section. They don't deserve the football they are served up most weeks and they certainly don't deserve their seat in the ground. There are many of us who would gladly take their place.

The club have become corporate whores and are now reaping the benefits.
