What’s the logic in getting on the players’ backs?

Eboue: Humiliated

Saturday was the first time in 20 years of being a season ticket holder that I felt completely ashamed to be an Arsenal fan. The loudest our stadium was the whole game was the moment these fans humiliated Eboue. I wish these fans would use this passion positively and get behind the team – it makes games much more enjoyable for all. Perhaps a few of them should try going to an away game to see what it is like being there just to support the team whatever the score. The state of the fans at the club now to me is at an all time low. What if we were in a similar position to Tottenham? I hate to say this but our support would be worse as it has now become so fickle. I dread to think what will happen if we were ever really struggling and the team need the fans 100% behind them.

What is even more worrying was the number of fans whose opinion I disagree with. Normally when the team is booed (which is becoming far too frequent anyway) it only seems to be a minority and difficult to actually work out around you who have been the culprits. Yet on Saturday it was a huge number who were jeering Eboue. In my lower tier block right behind the Arsenal bench it was disgraceful. The fact is the fans who booed Eboue are the same fans who boo Arsenal if we don’t win comfortably week in week out. I’m not blinkered, I know Eboue isn’t good enough and never will be but he’s not the only player out of his depth – have a look at Denilson. But I just cannot see the logic in getting on the players backs. How is it productive to the team?

Taking the huge salaries away and the fact we have the best manager in our history just for the moment, if you were a top player today would you actually want to play for Arsenal? I would expect you would rather play for a club where each home game generated an atmosphere, a club which had the team and fans united with a them and us mentality.

The one bit of comfort which still doesn’t make it right is that it isn’t just an Arsenal phenomenon, I expect a lot of these Arsenal boo-ers gave Chelsea fans plenty of stick for booing their team off when we beat them last week. That was bad form by Chelsea fans considering they had only seen two league defeats in four years. Liverpool booing the team off after going top of the league with a draw at home to Fulham! – the list is getting longer and more depressing and goes against everything that football stands for.

Personally it winds me up so much that I am now spending time arguing with other Arsenal fans at games and that isn’t what I spend my money for. I think people need to be pulled up on it. One bloke on Saturday gave me the whole ‘freedom of speech and I pay for my ticket’ response. He’s 100% right so I used my freedom of speech card to tell him to f**k off up the road to Spurs. Will the real Arsenal fans please stand up?
